October 7-October 12, 2024
Highland Parent, Student, and Ram Supporter,
We are approaching midterms this week on Wednesday 10/9/24. We are halfway through the 1st Trimester of school for the 2024-25 school year. Make sure you are watching your students attendance and grades. Reach out to teachers, counselors and/or administration if you need support. We want everyone to have the opportunity to be successful. Also, October is Breast Cancer awareness month. During breast cancer awareness month, we promote cancer awareness, prevention, and recognize survivors! Last week we had a pink themed dress day and the theme for the student section at the football game was pink in order to recognize breast cancer awareness.Â
CONGRATULATIONS HIGHLAND GOLF!
Congratulations to Highland Golf! Rebekah Maughan placed 1st for the girls for the 2nd year in a row leading them to a district championship. Boys finished strong and took 2nd at districts. Both teams will be competing in the 6A State Golf Tournament this Friday 10/11 and Saturday 10/12, come cheer them on! The tournament is hosted here in Pocatello at the Highland Golf Course. Great job Highland Golf and congratulations to our teams and Coach Burrup and Coach Miller!Â
Utah State Visits Highland, Friday, Oct. 11th
Our admissions rep from Utah State University, Tad Sorenson, will be HERE, at Highland, this Friday, October 11th, from 11:30 to 1:30, in B-18 (Ms. Plato’s room). Utah State is a very popular college choice for Highland students and this will be a nice opportunity to get questions answered about the application process and how to enroll. Utah State will also be at the Portneuf Valley College / Life Fair, but it could be crowded. Interested students can visit with Tad on Friday here, and on Monday at the College / Life Fair.
Portneuf Valley College / Life Fair, October 14th
Interested juniors and seniors may attend the brand-new Portneuf Valley College / Life Fair on Monday, October 14th. But you have to sign up in the Junior or Senior Google classrooms because space is limited. In addition to all the Idaho colleges, there will be out-of-state colleges, military representatives, cosmetology programs, and career technical training strategies – more than 50 different presenters. The fair is at Pocatello High School and we will be taking students by bus there and back. Students may pack a lunch or the lunch ladies will stay open a little bit longer so you can grab. Students who are signed up are school excused and attendance will be taken. But you have to SIGN UP, here:

Seniors => Apply Idaho Day, Wed., October 16th
The college career advisors and other helpers will be assisting senior students with Apply Idaho on Wednesday, October 16th, in the library, during Government classes. Never fear if you don’t have Government this trimester: we have a list of those students and will call them to C-36.
Apply Idaho is the platform from which students can apply to 10 Idaho colleges and career technical institutions for free. We have been talking to seniors this week, asking them to be thoughtful in their research and application choices. In addition to Apply Idaho, we will encourage students to complete Scholarship Idaho AND the Idaho Launch application for in-demand careers. Between Apply Idaho, Scholarship Idaho, and Idaho Launch students have a ton of opportunities.Â
In preparation for Apply Idaho, we would ask students:
> To know their Social Security number (put it in a password-protected file in your phone, not a picture of it). Apply Idaho and Scholarship Idaho will ask for it. Good for seniors to know their S.S. # anyway.
> Consider what their program or their college major might be – and Undecided is also a perfectly acceptable option.
> Be thoughtful in your applications. We hope each senior will apply to at least one college or training program and will only apply to the schools for which they have a sincere interest.
Here is a link to the hand-out we have been giving out to seniors this week: URLs, information, more.
