Community Based Learning

GOAL(s): The goal of this experience was to go out in the community and experience what it's like to have job in these environments, see the different potions and jobs out there. I planned to learn how to different kinds of working environments function specifically those related to my interests of medical and sciences (ex. dermaology, achaeology). In order to achieve these goals, I planned to use interviews and shadow experience with people have experience in the topics I was interested in. I chose topics based on my interests as well as things I could see myself doing in the future.

OUTCOME: One of the places I ended up interviewing was at Dorset Street Dermatology with Kara Hankes, a physical assistant in dermatology. I asked her about shadowing but they don't have very good customer service, I never got to do it. I interviewed an Esthetician at La Bella Derma, Chelsea Rusell was the the owner of the place and I got to watch her give a chemical peel to a client. The goal that I had was to shadow Kara Hankes, at Dorset Street Dermatology. That didn't happen. The main goal that I had for CBL was to interview and shadow the jobs that I would enjoy doing.

REFLECTION: What didn't work for you? What challenges did you face? What would you do differently in the future?

I learned that most of the jobs that I want I need to be social, need to start the conversation. You can't let your emotions get in the way of your job or how you treat customers/clients/. I'm not a very social person so having this would be hard. needing to start the conversation and remember the little things about the customer/client is a lot, with your personal life involved as well. The first day of going out for CBL would be my only take away. I wasn't prepared for that and got some comments for that. It was our third time going out, we went to the Maritime Museum, that was the best trip that we went on. I really wanted to see if I could talk to divers and shadow there. Something that didn't work was the Bread & Butter farm, the setting wasn't the best. The people where great and the place was great. Just the weather conditions weren't the best.
