Reflection:
I chose this topic because body image has always been a topic close to me. I have never been head-over-heels for the body that I have. I see influencers, models, characters, and everything along those lines and it makes me feel very insecure. I always felt the need to research more about this topic and do something big with it. I felt the biggest take-a-way that I read was all of the negative information about plus-size bodies or just images of websites in general. I was looking up some information for the solution statement, and I tried to tie it back into social media, so I thought of the biggest social media platform right now which is TikTok. A quote from Intelligencer, "According to documents obtained by the Intercept, TikTok advised moderators to keep certain body types and lifestyles out of the For You section. That includes anyone who falls into these categories: “Abnormal body shape, chubby, have an obvious beer belly, obese, or too thin.” They also axed people with “Ugly facial looks,” a category that includes traits like “misformatted” faces, missing teeth, and old people with “too many wrinkles.”
Similarly, videos would get removed from For You if they were shot in environments that are “shabby and dilapidated.” That includes, “slums,” “dilapidated housing,” and rooms with cracked walls or which are “extremely dirty and messy.” It shocked me, I mean I knew about it, but just finding some proof about it was gross. During the middle-end of the Research paper something happened to me that didn't help with my motivation or wanting to do anything, I still feel that way, but it's getting better I guess. Needing to find all these different sources, pick the ones out that fit best, and then needing to put it into a format when I just wanted to write about it was quite difficult. The way that all the outlines were formatted worked well and it went a lot faster than I thought it was going to go. All the support that Kevin gave with the one-on-one and the workshops also helped. I was not a massive fan of the crap ton of editing that he did but it helped make it better. Honestly, if I could, I'd do it again but I'd do it again with a different topic. I loved this topic but there were so many ideas that I had in my head, like toxic masculinity or pro-choice. The fact that I liked the topic was a big help in wanting to get it done. I'm not a big procrastinator when it comes to assignments that are assigned in NEO, because I'd see them then it would bother me seeing them in there so then I'd do it. I also type fast and like writing. I was also really motivated to not be one of those people that complained about it or didn't finish it.
