Land Navigation Basics
Required Material for Course: Orienteering Compass, Straight Edge, pencil
This course serves as an introduction, or basic refresher course, in the art of navigating. This course covers:
· Maps and map reading
· Basic terrain identification and types
· Compass Basics: nomenclature and design,
· Methods: marking your way with “pace counting,” finding “known points” via visual reference with your map on the ground,
· Coordinate Systems: Both Latitude-Longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator Grid Systems will be explained
John Nugent Bio:
John is a veteran ground searcher from El Dorado County SAR serving on both Ground and Technical Ropes Rescue teams. He has been on numerous searches, day and night including many out of county multi day campaigns in the field. He is also El Dorado County Land Navigation Instructor. He has also taught our ground members for qualification in both Land Navigation and GPS.
