My goal with my bear flintlock model is to both improve my sculpting skills with Zbrush and texturing skills by challenging myself to texture more realistic looking assets. This project also has a purpose to refine my portfolio which might land me a job in the future.
Modelling Phase:
Through Zbrush in this process I create a spherical shape. I then sculpt the models using a range of brushes and tools which helped me slowly mould a sphere into this bear head shape. For the other part of the flintlock I have to use a tool which edits edges and face on polys.
Once I finished modelling I then duplicate the model and make a low poly version as lower polys are a lot less intense on your computer as well, being more efficient as certain texture maps (normal maps) give off the illusion of higher detail by tricking the light.
UV unwrapping Phase:
The UV unwrapping phase is basically vertical origami where you have to make sure the surfaces of the object will display the texture properly while also hiding the cuts.
Texturing Phase
By far my favourite phase is texturing as you can slowly see your asset come to life. That being said there are a few thing you must consider when giving people the illusive feeling of your asset feeling real. This involves research into what material your asset is made out of and what is the condition of the matutinal.
Overall this part of my workflow is the most fun and I always like to improve my texture quality every time I am up to this stage.
Hello I am Elias Holthouse and I plan to be a professional prop artist. I am inspired by stylized games such as Sea of Thieves, Overwatch, and WOW however I am not afraid to model assets in a realistic style. I am currently completing my bachelor's degree in animation at SAE Perth. In my modelling process I usually the following tools:
Marmoset Toolbag
Maya
Photoshop
Substance 3D Painter
Substance 3D Sampler
Zbrush
