Preface: The assignment was to create a collage of 3 or more images and then to make a painting that was inspired by your collage. My collage is on the left, and the inspired painting is on the right.
The subject of these works is a large black man consuming a donkey that has a pile of pickles on its back in a rainbow vortex. This was made using canvas, masking tape, acrylic paint, and a pencil. When I began making my collage I had no clue where to begin. I started by just putting the donkey onto a white background. From there I spent a long time coming up with an idea but when I did it came together perfectly. After I added the guy eating the donkey, I decided to add the rainbow background to fit with my chaotic scene.
In this I used formal balance. I think that the eyes are drawn to near the center of the work which is because my piece is evenly spread out across the canvas. I also used framing because in the final product, there is a one inch border around the piece. When I started this, I had no idea where it would end up. After I had the idea to have someone eating the donkey, it all came together smoothly.
The meaning behind this is that the big man is hungry. It relates to my life because sometimes when I get really hungry, I feel like I could eat a whole donkey too. My biggest problem with this piece is that I messed up the donkey's head. It looks mishappen and deformed. I also wish I could have added more texture to the donkey's fur. I tried several times but I couldn't achieve the results I wanted so I just painted over it with one color.
