Color Study

The subject is 2 men, the one in the front is carrying a panda over his shoulders and the one in the back is following but he is mostly covered by the one in the front. This was made by griding one centimeter squares onto a piece of drawing paper and then averaging each color from each square in the reference image and filling each square using oil pastel. I chose to make this because I found the picture in a national geographic magazine and I liked it.

In this piece I used soft focus. The color averaging in each square makes it look like an extremely low quality image. Each square looks like one pixel. I also used framing to make the border of the paper. This piece didn't change much from start to finish. It took a while to pick a reference image but once I had one it was relatively easy but time consuming to grid the paper and fill each individual square one at a time.

Just by looking at this, there is no chance anyone would be able to guess the actual subject. The pixels would seem in almost random order unless you already knew what the subject was. This leaves interpretation of the piece up to the viewer. This relates to my life because I am the one who made it and I like the reference image with the 2 guys and the panda. I think it is very messy. The borders between the squares are fuzzy and indistinct in some parts so if I were to redo it I would tidy those up and make them better and cleaner.
