ABSTRACT
“Servant Leadership: A Model Rooted in the Word of God” by Brian Stephens documents the history of the modern model of servant leadership, reviews key thinkers influential in the development and propagation of the model, explores the function of servant leadership in organizational life, and highlights the striking similarities between the modern model of servant leadership and the ancient principles of leadership prescribed in the Holy Bible. The effectiveness of servant leadership is extolled through a sampling of academic literature and the scriptural soundness of servant leadership is heralded by examining a selection of supportive and instructive verses of scripture taken from the King James Version of the Holy Bible. The centrality of love as a motivation for selfless service on the part of leaders towards those whom they lead, both in the scriptural prescriptions for leaders and in the modern model of servant leadership, is a key theme explored by the author.
