ABSTRACT
“Impact on student learning” by Lexey Tobel documents an initiative to improve learning for students at different levels of preparedness by the use of assessment to inform needed instruction adaptations in order to engage all students. The initiative began with a pre-assessment before a grammar unit focusing on prepositional phrases, adjective phrases, adverb phrases, participles, participial phrases, gerunds, gerund phrases, infinitives, infinitive phrases, appositives, and appositive phrases. The pre-assessment was analyzed and the data was used to begin the instruction and determine what knowledge the students were beginning the grammar module with, and where gaps were seen. Various forms of formative and summative assessments were given including grammar exercises, multiple kahoots, prepositional phrase Pictionary, a post-test, and more. The effects of Lexey Tobel’s instruction were analyzed based on the data collected from the final post-assessment given. The comparison of the results of the pre-assessment to the post-assessment indicated that her instruction ultimately had a positive impact on the students' learning.
