ABSTRACT
Campout in the Courtyard is a one act play. Playwrights have introduced different types of writing styles into the English curriculum and have made an impact on the world of entertainment. Campout in the Courtyard demonstrates said impact through the audience’s experience. The audience experiences entertainment while receiving a message and theme about friendship, risk taking, and characters fully living their teenage lives. The methodology used to complete this project includes popular, academic, and primary source research. It also includes the process of writing multiple drafts but also the added skill of incorporating stage direction and design. Moreover, it includes multimodal revision and adapting the writer’s style from fiction writing to playwriting. The composition of this play demonstrates the author’s dedication to the craft and to the many ways in which writing affects daily life through media such as film and television programs. To quote the great Stan Lee, renowned writer and the founding father of Marvel’s Avengers, “entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it, they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain people, you’re doing a good thing.” This project reflects the author’s vocation as a writer of entertainment. Plays have the power to make the audience forget themselves for a while and simply become immersed in another world, even if it is only for a minute. In the case of Campout in the Courtyard, that minute is one act.
