ABSTRACT
Children learn through play. When children engage in free play, they are learning about the world around them. Outdoor play specifically, is a very important component to children’s development. Outdoor play provides the perfect environment for children to develop physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and literacy skills. Playing in nature also promotes problem solving and creativity in children with the use of natural materials. The idea of creating an outdoor classroom has grown increasingly popular among early childhood programs. However, playground equipment and surfacing are very expensive and typically take up most of outdoor budget for childcare centers. Grant funds will be used to purchase items that will create an outdoor classroom with a variety of interest areas and materials to be used rain or shine. Children do not spend enough time outdoors, especially those who experience periods of excessive cold or rain in their area. The outdoor classroom will provide enriching learning experiences by including rain suits to stay at school, a large sensory table, buckets, shovels, digging material, small pots and pans, outdoor building blocks, and the material to create an outdoor arts and crafts area under the covered spaces. Having these items will help create an outdoor space that will be inviting and inclusive for preschool age children, allowing them the freedom to be as creative and adventurous as they choose while learning in their own way.
