ABSTRACT
The purpose for developing a Personal Philosophy of Education is to bring to light the importance of fostering creativity in the classroom for future generations as well as for educators who wish to grow in their current field. Through years as an Early Childhood educator and in the studies at Rochester University, it has been found that fostering creativity in children at a young age is very important. Not only so, but educators must also provide the environment and materials to nurture creativity in the classroom. Through arts-based teaching, having a variety of materials available gives children a chance to explore something different and also helps them to utilize their five senses. Creativity also helps children develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills (Rooney, 2004). Creativity can be integrated into the curriculum and help children with subjects such as science, mathematics, and writing. According to Rooney (2004), “arts-based teaching can increase children's interest, motivation, cognitive skills, academic performance, communication skills, and positive self-esteem” (p. 43). Giving children a sense of creative freedom can open a child’s mind to an endless amount of learning and opportunities.
