ABSTRACT

Young children learn in many ways, one of them being through play which involves children using their imagination. Teachers can foster a child’s active imagination with high-quality children’s literature and also with the use of children’ books and puppets to aid in teaching multiple subjects. Children can learn counting, rhyming, problem-solving, and identify letters and numbers all through being exposed to books. This is only possible if classrooms have high-quality children’s literature available for the children. Unfortunately, many early childhood classrooms do not have high-quality literature available. Grant funds will be used to purchase high-quality children’s literacy materials, providing children with an alternative way to learn skills while also engaging their imagination. Teachers noticed that when books of various genres were given to children to explore and read, the library area became a place where many children wanted to spend their work time. Adding high-quality children’s literature in different genres and materials such as big books and puppets will provide young children an opportunity to enhance their skills in areas such as language, cognition, and math while also promoting a love of reading at a young age.
