ABSTRACT
The reason behind this Philosophy of Education paper is to express this student’s belief on what is the best approach to teaching. Through personal experiences of working with children and learned knowledge of the constructionist theory, it is understood that the educational approach of teaching at the child’s individual level is the best fit for this early childhood educator. By studying the research of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky’s theories on cognitive development in children, the educator is prepared to teach and guide students in a way that meets each child at their individual level. It is important for teachers to keep in mind that no two children are the same regardless of their age or where they come from. Therefore, children should be taught with that uniqueness in mind. When teachers make allowance for children’s individual differences and provide a variety of educational experiences that suit children’s individual interests, abilities, and backgrounds, all students can be appropriately challenged without being discouraged. With the knowledge gained from the classes taken at Rochester University, this educator will be well-prepared for a career in early childhood education.
