ABSTRACT
Learning to appreciate nature and its benefits is truly important. “Grow It” teaches toddler and preschool children in the inner-city how to garden. Children will have the opportunity to learn how to grow healthy foods, partake in healthy eating, and reduce food insecurities. Through garden play, toddlers and preschoolers will learn essential skills and have fun; this will be done in the context of a Montessori-style environment. Gardening will fuel both curiosity and enthusiasm in toddlers and preschool children and foster responsibility and reliability when providing daily care of the garden. It will also improve self-confidence as they will learn about cause and effect. The grant will provide fresh produce for the children and their families. Teachers observed children not eating fresh fruits and vegetables when they were offered at mealtimes. The garden will include raised beds and trees. Gardening can become a playground for all five senses; it can encourage healthy eating, enhance fine motor skills development, reduce stress when trying new foods, enhance memory, and improve focus. It promotes physical activity, family bonding, building relationships, and a love for nature.
