ABSTRACT
Within a fifth grade classroom, a unit of study was conducted on Native Americans. The purpose of this study was to determine whether growth could be shown between the pretest scores of students and the post-test scores of students, after having been taught the material by their teacher. The unit consisted of two chapters, each containing multiple sections of text. The population that the Native Americans unit was taught a class of twenty-four ten-year-old students. The unit was taught over the course of a few weeks, with the teacher teaching fifty minute lessons each day. Included in the unit were topics such as Native American culture and the seven cultural regions and the four types of environments. Students were tasked with completing various assignments as a whole class, in partners, and as individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of Native Americans as the unit progressed. When the study was concluded, it was found that twenty-two out of twenty-four students showed an increase in their test scores.
