Dear Rio Grande School Community,
Thank you for your engagement, patience, and care during a deeply challenging time for our school. Last week brought significant emotional weight to our community as we confronted unsettling news. I want to acknowledge the strength, compassion, and commitment our faculty, families, and Board of Trustees showed.
We are moving forward with focus and resolve. I attached a summary document outlining immediate and longer-term updates to our policies and procedures to strengthen student safety and institutional accountability. Some changes are already being implemented, while others require time and thoughtful development. This is the beginning of an ongoing process — not a one-time fix — and we are committed to doing this work with transparency, intention, and care.
Several community members raised thoughtful questions about the role and responsibilities of the Board of Trustees. These questions are both welcome and important. Each fall, we host a Coffee with the Head of School and Board Chair to discuss the purpose and function of independent school boards, and we strongly encourage your attendance. This information is also provided at the New Parent Orientation. In the meantime, you may find these two resources helpful:
The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Guide to the Board’s Role: Board of Trustees;
We remain committed to strengthening our systems and our relationships with one another. I am grateful for your partnership and trust as we move forward.
Warmly,
Ahlum Scarola
Head of School

Please join us in welcoming Oliver Winkler to Rio Grande School!
Oliver, son of our beloved kindergarten teacher, Ms. Jemima, is a senior at Santa Fe Prep and will spend the coming weeks completing his required internship hours on our campus. He’ll support educators and connect with students across all grade levels.
Oliver will begin his studies at Northeastern University this fall. While his current goal is a career in medicine, we’re hopeful his time with us might inspire a detour into education!
