Dear RGS Families,
It’s no secret that illness has been making its rounds through our community these past few weeks. From fevers to coughs to stomach bugs, we’ve seen it all! Thankfully, with spring just around the corner, we are hopeful that we are finally moving past the worst of it. We appreciate your diligence in keeping sick children home and following school health guidelines to help curb the spread.
As we look ahead, we also want to bring awareness to the recent measles cases reported in Gaines County Texas, right on our border. This is a good time to review our Measles Policy, which follows the latest New Mexico Department of Health and the CDC guidance. You can find the full policy here: RGS Measles Policy and we encourage all families to be familiar with it.
Measles is highly contagious, spreading through coughing and sneezing and lingering in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Symptoms typically develop 7 to 14 days after exposure, including high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and a rash that spreads from the face down the body.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school community healthy and safe!
Best,
Ahlum Scarola

About the Española Humane Society:
The Española Humane Society is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in Northern New Mexico. The EHS annually provides over 5,000 animals with free spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and rescue services.
Your family's participation in this project will make a significant difference in the lives of many local animals in need. Thank you for your generosity and support.
Dear Rio Grande School Families,
Our students have overwhelmingly voiced interest in supporting a local animal welfare organization. We have chosen the Española Humane Society to partner with for our next service learning project.
As part of your child's co-curricular day (February 27) activities, the students who cycle through the library (first grade, second grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade) will be investing part of their time sorting, organizing, and labeling donations for the shelter.
We are excited to invite you to participate by donating items from their specific wish lists below. Or, if it is easier for you, you may Venmo me, and I will buy supplies on your behalf. We will spend library time next week talking about this service learning project and we may even get a visitor from EHS to come and visit with us!
How You Can Help:
Donate Items: The Española Humane Society has provided detailed wish lists of urgently needed items. You can view and purchase items directly from their Amazon Wish List and Chewy Wish List. Please have your items delivered to the school, or be sure to have your children bring purchased goods no later than February 26th.

***Clean used towels and blankets are also welcome***
Drop-Off Location: Please bring your donations to Rio Grande School by February 26, 2025. Our students will sort, count, and label all items to ensure they reach the shelter promptly.
We all know that our teachers are rock stars —but even rock stars need fuel to keep the show going! On Co-Curricular Day (February 27th), let’s show our appreciation by feeding them with a delicious, home-cooked, potluck-style feast.
Here’s the game plan:
Bring a dish (savory, sweet, or somewhere in between)
Drop it off at morning drop-off (because breaks vary)
Crockpots? We’ve got you covered! Extension cords provided to keep things warm & toasty
No pressure to be a five-star chef—whether it’s grandma’s famous casserole or your "I-just-bought-this-at-Costco" specialty, it’s the thought (and the food) that counts!
Let us know what you’re bringing by signing up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E49AEA823A2F8C34-54919159-staff
Thanks for helping us treat our teachers like the VIPs they are!
With gratitude,
The Parent Association
Due to low order numbers, we have been keeping the ordering window for lunch open.
To ensure your order is received in time it is recommended to place your lunch orders at least a week ahead, for the following week.
Check weekly menus, load your bank, place orders and more at EZ School Apps.
Please ensure your students pack enough snacks to comfortably get them through the school day.
I am beyond excited to be joining the Rio Grande School community as the After School Teacher. I bring over six years experience as a teacher working with elementary school ages and am currently in graduate school to receive my Masters in Counseling Psychology with plans to become a child psychologist.
I have certifications in teaching yoga as well as mindfulness and love to bring both into my work. In my free time outside of the classroom, I love hiking with friends and loved ones, playing with my cat Luna, swimming in the ocean (when I am back on the West Coast visiting family), and cooking seasonal foods from the farmers market.
Santa Fe has been home only since this past August and am loving the incredibly expansive sky and kind and artistic community.
