J-PAL North America wishes to provide the necessary supplies and equipment for staff to work comfortably and effectively from home. This applies to all staff with J-FLEX hybrid and long-term remote work arrangements. J-PAL has provided the following guidance in accordance with MIT’s established policies. Under these flexible work arrangements, all new and existing staff are eligible to receive a standard package of computer accessories, including a mouse, keyboard, laptop, monitor, and any accompanying cables or USB hubs. Staff can find our most frequently purchased items here, for reference.
Requests for additional work from home supplies should be submitted via the J-PAL NA Expense and Maintenance Request Form to allow J-PAL to purchase these items directly. Please do not use a personal credit card and seek reimbursement for these purchases.
Employees that have received permission to become fully remote and new, remote employees should speak with their manager to determine allowable expenses for their home setup.
MIT’s VPF Property Office will track purchase orders for computers or office equipment shipped to employees at their homes and will send an inventory tag to the employee’s home for any purchased equipment priced at $1,000 or more. Employees should attach the MIT inventory tag to the new equipment. MIT-owned equipment must generally be returned to MIT at the end of employment.
If an employee requests specific equipment or furniture as an accommodation for a disability, please consult with the Disability Services and Medical Leaves Office.
Per MIT policy, we are not permitted to pay or reimburse staff for the following:
Home internet connection
Cell phone expenses
Increased utility expenses
Purchase of an air conditioner
