From the 1820s to the 1840s, many Americans were spurred on by the Lewis and Clark exploration to see what was in the west. A group of rugged individuals pushed into the Rocky Mountains, living a life of freedom and adventure, trapping animal furs and selling them to make a living. As you can imagine, their lives were quite eventful in this untamed land. Native Americans, dangerous animals, and extreme weather conditions all made this lifestyle one that required bold and resourceful individuals to survive.
For this activity, you will be choosing one individual and looking into their life. You will eventually create 3 Instagram posts covering events from their life, as if you were them posting to their friends.
I created a sample post from our old friend Enzo. You will see he has the following in his post:
an image with his name at the top left and where he's at
a main image of the event he is talking about (bus driving)
who has liked the post, and how many
his actual words with #s and number of comments (257)
responses from others (pike, garland)
a response back from Enzo
You will get instructions on how to create the fake post in class tomorrow. Today is a day to just do some research into your figure.
TODAY'S HOMEWORK: Note 5-6 things about your person on the document. You will choose 3-4 to post about.
TODAY'S HOMEWORK: I would like you to have 1 post done by the end of class Thursday. The entire Instagram post page (with 3-4 posts) is not due until next Tuesday.
HERE ARE A FEW OF THE PEOPLE YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM.
Jim Bridger Hugh Glass Jedidiah Smith Kit Carson
James Beckwourth John Colter Joseph Walker Marie Dorian (female)
John "Grizzley" Adams Bill Hamilton **or anyone else you can find
IF THE NAMES ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN RED, they are featured in an excellent video series called "Into the Wild Frontier". These are great videos that dive into the lives of these people very well. If your person is in red, take time today and watch 10-15 minutes from the video linked below. We have plenty of time for this assignment (due next Tuesday), so take your time as you learn about their life. When you find something noteworthy as you watch, push pause and write it down on the Mountain Man Doc.
IF A NAME IS NOT IN RED, there are still plenty of resources out there to learn about their lives. You can use a link at the bottom of this page or google search and find links.
John Colter, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Jedidiah Smith, James Beckwourth, Joseph Walker
Alphabetical order links to just about everybody that did something during this time.
