There's a saying that time heals all wounds. This definitely applies with England.
Today England is one of our strongest allies in the world, if not our strongest. However, 240 years ago we were fighting with each other to the fields in the fields and towns of the east coast in a bloody and brutal war for independence. Then, after a few decades of shaky peace, we were fighting with them yet again in the War of 1812. But that's all in the past. There has been no Round 3.
Like Spain and Portugal, England grew into a very powerful global empire during the Age of Discovery. While Spain and Portugal focused on establishing colonies in Central and South America, England landed on the east coast of North America. They had a bit of competition with the Dutch near modern day New York, but eventually established control of the entire east coast. This land became known as the 13 colonies.
