THE FIRST 5 LEADERS
George Washington
John Adams
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe
James Monroe won the Election of 1816 as a Democratic-Republican. With his victory, the Federalist party was essentially gone.
Monroe served for 8 years and his era is called the “Era of Good Feelings” for a couple reasons:
We had recently defeated England and were feeling stronger as a nation.
The Democratic-Republicans were the only party in charge.
In the span of 30 years, nearly all of Latin America went from being colonized by European powers to being independent nations. How do you think the United States viewed these new nations?

1. The United States would not interfere in the affairs of European nations.
2. The United States would recognize, and not interfere with, colonies that already existed in North and South America.
3. The Western Hemisphere was to be off-limits to future colonization by any foreign power.
4. The U.S. government would consider any European power’s attempt to colonize or interfere with nations in the Western Hemisphere to be a hostile (or offensive toward the U.S.) act. (This implies we would consider steps to fight to prevent it.)
