*After the Declaration of Independence, the newly formed United States of America knew it would face war--they had committed treason.
*However, it was not prepared in a variety of ways for the demands of large scale war against the most powerful Army and Navy in the world.
*The Continental Congress chose George Washington to be the overall commander of the war. He was a logical choice, and though far from perfect, had leadership qualities needed for the task.
*Washington quickly realized the troops were undisciplined, inexperienced, and badly lacking in equipment from ammunition to clothes.
*England dominated the early stages of the war, quickly pushing the army from New York and forcing Washington to retreat repeatedly to keep his army together.
*However, England could never quite deliver the knock out blow to Washington, who learned from mistakes and was determined to put up the best fight he could with the limited resources he had.
*As the years passed, England became more and more frustrated with their inability to finish off the Americans. Americans, in turn, became more confident and determined to win. In the end, America found a way to defeat England and came away victorious in the nation's first war.Â
