CHERNOBYL NATURAL DISASTER, 1986
In 1986, the world's worst man-made disaster took place when a nuclear reactor in the Soviet Union (today inside Ukraine) exploded. Reactor No. 4 exploded during a late-night safety test. A flawed reactor design, combined with operator errors, led to an uncontrollable reaction and a massive release of radioactive material into the atmosphere. The explosion and subsequent fires caused widespread contamination across Europe, forced the evacuation of thousands of residents, and resulted in numerous acute radiation sickness cases and long-term health and environmental impacts. It remains the worst nuclear disaster in history.
