*With the Constitution now in power to run our new nation, it is time to see how our government will lead us going forward.
*George Washington, the first president, keeps us out of foreign wars, much to the anger of England and France. He also deals with rebellions strongly and decisively (Whiskey Rebellion). Washington leads with wisdom and often leans on various viewpoints to guide his decisions.
*Two differing views of the nation soon develop: the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. Federalists favor England, the wealthy, manufacturing, and a strong federal government. The DRs favor France, a weaker federal government, and the common person.
*John Adams (Federalist party) becomes our second president and nearly goes to war with France over the XYZ Affair. However, he ultimately manages to keep us out of war.
*Our third President, Thomas Jefferson (DR), doubles the size of the nation when he buys the Louisiana Territory from France.
*The Lewis and Clark Expedition (Corps of Discovery) explores this land for more than 2 years and finds a route to the Pacific Ocean. This will set the stage for Westward Expansion.
*England draws us into another conflict, called the War of 1812. It has many ups and downs, and is essentially a draw until the very end.
As a new nation, we take a LEAP onto the world stage. This acronym describes our early years as a nation.
L -- LAND. We now have an abundance of land to the west. Advancing into these areas bring many problems.
E -- EUROPE. Most of our foreign issues will involve managing our relationship with European nations, especially England and France.
A -- ANOTHER WAR. Though we stay neutral in global conflicts early, eventually we will fight another war against England.
P -- POLITICS. Two political parties begin to form, leading to division and bitter political fighting.

WHY DID THE WAR OF 1812 TAKE PLACE??
England was stealing American sailors off of ships and forcing them to work on British ships (called impressment)
England was giving weapons to Indians living to the west and encouraging them to fight against us.
WHERE DID THE BATTLES TAKE PLACE??
PRETTY MUCH ALL OVER.
FROM QUEBEC AND LAKE ERIE IN THE NORTH TO BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON DC ALL THE WAY TO NEW ORLEANS IN THE SOUTH.
STRATEGICALLY IT WOULD BE CALLED A DRAW BECAUSE NEITHER SIDE REALLY CRUSHED THE OTHER SIDE INTO LOSING COMPLETELY.
HOWEVER, THE BRITISH EVENTUALLY REALIZED THEY COULDN'T WIN AND GAVE UP, SIGNING THE TREATY OF GHENT TO END IT.
BAD LUCK FOR MANY: WORD OF THE TREATY DID NOT REACH NEW ORLEANS IN TIME TO PREVENT A MAJOR BATTLE FROM HAPPENING THERE. WE WON NEW ORLEANS AND CLAIMED VICTORY IN THE WAR.
BIGGEST IMPACTS: GOT THE BRITISH OUT OF OUR HAIR HERE AND BROUGH A STRONG SENSE OF UNITY TO THE NATION.
