*a person's judgment of what is important in life.
lighthouse:
*a tower with a bright light at the top, at an important or dangerous place regarding sea navigation (travel over water).
The purpose of a lighthouse is to help boats navigate dangerous waters, to prevent disasters. The reality of life is that it is hard. Sometimes bad things happen to us. Sometimes we find ourselves in challenging situations with tough decisions to make.
As much as I hope you learn about our great nation's history, I hope that you will also think about your own personal values this year. Your values are what will help you deal with the challenges you are going to experience in life, both this year and in the future. Values are like a lighthouse during a stormy sea.
Because I consider your social and emotional health to be so important, we will spend time this year doing exercises that will take us away from our history content and move us to examine things like Life Skills, values, and character. These days will take place mostly on Wednesdays or Thursdays and could play out with a few different activities:
BEYOND THE BOOK: We will watch video clips throughout the year that touch on a variety of areas. These will usually be 4:00-10:00 clips. You will have a Beyond the Book sheet to use for reflection as we watch these videos. and read pages of various leadershipbooks. We call these activities "Beyond the Book" and will use many of our Wednesdays for them.
LIFE'S GREATEST LESSONS: From time to time we will read different chapters from a book called Life's Greatest Lessons. The chapters focus on a particular topic and include handouts.
