LEAD YOUR GROUP
The map belows shows land that has just been made available in the nation. You are the leader of your family and a host of others, numbering around 100 total people. They are following you into this area and trusting you will make the best decision for their future.
Trees - important for the lumber to build homes, tools, and boats.
River/lakes - fresh water is vital, both for drinking and fishing.
Bison/deer - food is obviously a necessity for survival, so being near wild game is important.
Soil - not all land is created equal. The plots shown on the map are locations where great soil can be found to crow crops.
Natives - there are already people living in these lands. They may or may not be welcoming to new and different people.
You have 3 minutes to decide where you will lead your people. Choose a plot of land (example A6, B1) to move your group to.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 is an awful name. Not very catchy and too long.
But it was one of the few positive contributions made by Congress during the Articles of Confederation years.
Created by Thomas Jefferson and Rufus "the" King, it helped organize how to best settle the new land gained from England in the Revolutionary War.
We were now heading west of the Appalacian Mountains to a lot of available land, and states wanted to simply extend their boundaries all the way to the Mississippi River to claim it for themselves.
Arguments were already getting tense. So the Confederation Congress created the NW Ordinance of 1787 to decide exactly how these lands would be settled. It solved the problem and opened the door for new states to be created in the future.
