Abraham Lincoln is famous for a few reasons:
He was the President during the Civil War
He was assassinated in a theatre while watching a play
His awesome beard
The way he aged during his 4 years in office.
A few background tidbits:
Born in Kentucky
Raised in southern Indiana until he was 21 -- farm life, hard work
Settled as an adult in Springfield, Illinois
Worked as a flatboat navigator, storekeeper, soldier, land surveyor, post master, lawyer, and later politician
He won the election of 1860 and knew chaos was laying at his feet. His main goal was to keep the Union together, however that looked.
Vicksburg was one of the most important victories for the North. It gave us control of the Mississippi River and split the Southern states in two halves.
