_Learning Targets_
At the end of this module, students will be able to...
1) Define Generative AI
2) Explain ethical concerns about its use
3) Create a new work using Generative AI
_ What is Generative AI?
_ Generative AI is a type of Artificial Intelligence used to create various new material such as text, pictures, videos and music.
_ Its computer programming essentially compiles large amounts of published work, studies or analyzes them for stand-out themes and characteristics, and then mimics the various details of those examples to make something new.
_ A person must be skilled to set certain limitations or guiding parameters in order to create more exact work but these guidelines can be easily refined as you go until the desired outcome is achieved.
_ What ethical concerns exist about its use?
Ethical concerns are a major talking point when it comes to the subject of Generative AI. As impressive a tool as it is, many people, myself included, are apprehensive about its widespread use. Especially before I began my research and started to learn about many of the positive things about it, I feared that regular use of such technology would inhibit people’s ability to think creatively and would instead rely too heavily on the computer to do the work for you. Besides relieving users of creative thinking, it is feared that use of Generative AI has the potential to too closely resemble its source material and plagiarize the work resulting in honor violations and/or lawsuits. Regarding real-world impact, it is also a concern that people’s jobs and livelihoods are negatively impacted when they are replaced by AI technology.
_How do you create new work using Generative AI?
Since the use of this technology is only anticipated to spread, its important to know how best to utilize it in a way that is not only productive, but also creative and ethical. Generative AI is a great tool to help streamline the efficiencies of many tasks and assignments so my students will demonstrate just how they can put it to work for them and create work that they can be proud to submit. Using ChatGPT as the tool I’m most familiar, it begins with a blank slate. As you ask questions by typing them into the prompt window, the tool begins to answer. If the answer produced need refining, simply ask the prompt to rework the response using different, more specific criteria.
_Reflection & Conclusion
The use of Generative AI continues to spread into many fields and industries as well as in education. As educators, its important that we stay up to date on its development so that we can be prepared and equipped to guide our students in its use. On one hand, its an incredible tool that has the ability to greatly assist us with many tasks and duties but on the other, it can also be used in ways that are dishonest and even harmful. As users and observers, it’ll be a subject of continuing debate and study while we explore all the various applications and limitations that this groundbreaking new tool is capable. It is my hope that this brief assignment will, at the very least, give a good introduction and clear the air of some core questions about generative AI to my peers and future students as I plan to lecture about the subject regularly in my own classroom.

A. Generating Text B. Creating Pictures C. Making Videos D. Cooking Dinner
2) Which of the following is NOT a common concern about the widespread use of Generative AI
A. Job loss B. Plagiarism C. Over-reliance D. Allergic Reaction
_How I used AI
For this assignment, I used Easybib, Grammarly, and ChatGPT. Easybib was used to check my APA formatting, Grammarly was used proofread and check for grammatical errors, and finally ChatGPT was used to brainstorm learning targets. This work is still my own despite utilizing these tools to support and enhance my learning process.
