Who am I
Both my parents immigrated to America from the Philippines in the early 2000s. I was born and raised in Virginia Beach on December 30th, 2004. My love for educating and helping others came about in High School. I was getting involved with my community and lending a hand when available. However, my summer job as a camp counselor through the school system is my main motivator. Virginia Beach Leadership Workshop shaped me into the person I am today and I wish to have the same impact on at least one person.
I kept the high-busy energy into college. Off rip, I became a member and the Secretary of the Filipino American Student Association, I joined a Fraternity, Sigma Pi, a part of the Asian Student Advisory Board, a senator for the Student Government Association, and a proud member of VSA, and APASU. I am seeking a secondary history-social science education and a degree in political science.
Now I am Sophomore at the great Old Dominion University, I was able to pick up five littles who are claiming me to be their mentor and friend. Hopefully I can pass my passion of helping others onto my littles but only time can tell. I am excited to take more major based classes. Educational based classes are fun since they are more hands on and additionally I meet more like minded people
What I know
My experience as a teacher may not be as rich or abundant as others but I do have some experience within my sleeves. Being a teacher is not as easy as some people may think. There will be situations that you never thought of and do not know how to handle it. Or there might be a question asked and you do not know how to answer it. Being a teacher is more than being an educator, it also means being a flexible role model.
As someone who spends a lot of time within the community, I have learned a lot of valuable skills. Skills that could be translated into becoming a better teacher. Communication, Patiences, and flexibility are the first three to come to mind since they're so important. Mostly communication, without a understanding between the parties, nothing cannot get done or final product does not solve the initial problem.
What I have to Learn
One thing I need to learn that sticks out like a sore thumb is realizing my academic privilege differs from others. I enjoyed my time in school but that is because I had the privilege to attend a school that wanted to see me succeed. Additionally, I had the personal privilege of affording a lot of time at school. I fail to realize that the school system here in Virginia Beach is not going to be the same. Since moving to Norfolk, I have heard a lot of differences between Norfolk and Virginia Beach and they are neighbors.
Personally, a lot of the "teacher" work I've been doing has mostly been centered around interacting with students and being a role model. I have not had to teach a curriculum or make one. Additionally, another fundamental I like is setting rules and standards. Most of the kids/students I work with usually have a good understanding of the rules and typically are behaved. Especially during Leadership workshops where Class Presidents, School executives, team captains, etc are the ones attending, I don't have to be too rough around the edges.
The Teacher I Will Become
The teacher I want to be is someone more than an educator. Yes, learning and acquiring knowledge is important, but it could be virtually useless without passion or direction. The purpose of school is to give kids multiple opportunities for success. Either through the classrooms to get a degree or on a basketball court to get signed to the NBA. School has the power to set the tone for life. The most important thing my students will learn is that they can succeed the right way. They do not need to cheat, steal, or succeed at the expense of others. I want to teach my students honest ways of succeeding. As a history teacher, this would be pretty easy to incorporate this lesson into a normal curriculum. There are plenty of stories of people starting at the bottom and reaching the top. History is filled with stories that can help the students resonate with. The educational experience I want to provide is a memorable and meaningful one. I want my students to love coming to school and remember what they did but I also want them to learn something from it. It is easy to make school fun and memorable, but it is hard to make learning fun and memorable. I do not like being the center of attention of students nor do I wish to be. Yes, it is nice that my previous students looked up to me and wanted to learn more about me, but at the end of the day, if they are too busy looking up, they won't realize what they have in front of them. Additionally, Ill show my students support and compassion but I do not like when they try to be sort of a best friend and they try to get into my personal business.
With the help of ChatGpt and Arctic Monkeys, I was able to learn about the educational philosophies. After reading a few recipes, songs, and comedic conversations, I was able to deduce I am an existentialist. With the help of ChatGpt again, I asked it what someone would see in an existentialism classroom then I modified it a bit to add a little of Rj spice. If a visitor walks into Raniel Jay Mendoza’s AP US History class they will see comfortable, creative seating that will encourage group discussion. Instead of classic row and forward-facing desks, the tables will be in clusters with various desk and seating options. There would be inspiring quotes littered on the whiteboard every morning by famous individuals or possibly the subject of today’s class. Additionally, the traditional, “There is no one “right” answer,” poster would be up. Students would feel relaxed not due to the seating but to the curriculum. Students do not feel restrained and forced to follow and learn in a manner I set but on their own accord. All the students will have a common goal to reach but how they reach such a goal will be different. Maybe one student needs to have a more hands-on approach and create a video. Another student can do the bare minimum and just get the dates on an essay.
I asked Canvas Dream Lab AI to generate a photo of explores in a classroom. The reason is, that I want my students to feel like they are free and have the ability to explore their own desires and wants. An explorer is free to explore wherever and whenever. Exploders are not chained to one certain area, one day they can search the great seas, and the next dumpster dive at their local Best Buy. I want my students to feel the same liberation as an explorer so they can feel like it was their choice. The reason why they found their passion, or the correct answer was because they took the time to explore around and find the right answer.
At first, I wanted to generate an image that resonates with one of my core beliefs as an educator. This saying was from a special person who has taught me a lot about becoming an educator, role model, and overall a better human being. She believed the hardest people to love were the ones who needed it the most. Every time I hear that saying, it motivates me to stay on track on my education path. Every kid deserves a loving mentor. AI was struggling to put those words into a comprehendible image that makes sense. At first, it tried to spit out a bunch of images of people and then abstract art about the heart but it could not fully encapsulate the message. I wanted to share this because I find it interesting that the reason it was struggling to make an image was because the saying it solely based on emotions, especially love.
How I Used Ai
ChatGpt - As mentioned before I used ChatGpt to help me learn about the different ways of teaching. Used various prompts to get different ways to digest the information while also tweaking it to fit more my style. For example, while using the song prompt I kept on asking it to rewrite it till it matched what I was looking for. At first it tired to give me a song about literal philosophy, and then I had to ask it to make the song based on Arctic Monkeys' 505.
Prompts used: "Create a roleplay or dialogue of a group of teachers with different educational philosophies discussing the best way to deliver a lesson on _____ (insert a topic or SOL standard from your content area)" / "If educational philosophies were recipes, what ingredients would go into each of the 5 recipes?" / "Create a ___ (music genre) song that teaches me about the philosophies (in the style of _____ (musical artist). Bonus: Use one of the tools below to create a real song with voice and music."
