I was born in Falls Church, Virginia where I grew up in the same house all my life. Some of my main hobbies/interests include sports, activities that exercise creativity, and cooking. Leaning on meditation to maneuver through difficult times has developed the belief that anyone can overcome or improve upon anything through dedicated care, thought, and execution which is a primary belief that I hope to instill into my students. I have always had a close proximity to the Education field because my father has been a ninth grade Biology teacher for twenty four years.
I have a drive for not only educating the youth but also providing a safe space for the many students who feel as though they do not have access to a comforting person or place in their life. My main motivation for entering the education field comes from the small handful of the educators who had a positive influence on me and provided me that safe space when I never knew there was such thing as a safe space.
Adaptability to Student Needs - There will never be a full classroom of identical minds which causes any teacher to have to understand their audience and make changes to cater to their students needs. A teacher must decide whether they want to teach to the top of the class, middle of the class, or to the bottom of the class. Doing so requires skills in analyzing your students behaviors as well as critically thinking about how one can apply and manage classroom operations in order to curate a learning environment that appeals to all of your students.
Flexibility and Understanding For Students Home Lives - My father teaches at a school where there are many under privileged children that have extremely difficult and strenuous home lives. This brings about many behavioural and attendance issues that he has to deal with on a daily basis, it surprised me to find out he approaches these issues not with a iron fist, but a caring shoulder to lean on. Understanding that "you can never know what a student has to go home to" is a key mantra I want to live by because at the end of the day these are just children and some were born into situations where they must display more resilience on a daily basis than any teacher could ever understand.
Accountability in the Classroom - Through observations made in my own experiences as a student, I have found that my classmates and I are always much less receptive and respectful to a teacher who runs their classroom as if they can do no wrong. It is much harder to give a teacher your effort if you do not like them or respect them and teachers who set up their classroom like a dictatorship often will run into those problems. Teachers that open themselves up to correction, advice, or just the opportunity to voice your concerns show the students that their thoughts can be just as important as the teacher which makes a much more unified classroom.
There is an immeasurable amount of knowledge I can still benefit from knowing as an educator but I have focused this into three major categories: Communication, Upholding Boundaries, and Teaching to the Middle of the Class.
Communication - One major area of worry that I have going into my teaching career is making sure that I am able to create a message that a wide array of people can properly interpret. I often struggle with putting my thoughts into words and I don't want this problem to carry over into my teaching career. I must supplement this with learning how to create effective and efficient lesson plans for my students that also contain somewhat of backup plans in the event of my lesson going a bit off the rails. Doing so will not only provide me comfort in the flow of my teaching but also added confidence knowing I have something to fall back on in case something goes wrong.
Upholding Boundaries - I intend to have a more student centered classroom which will grant my students more freedom and control on a day to day basis. I worry that situations of a power struggle or loss of respect will come with this freedom as I've seen it happen as a student observing my teachers throughout the years. I worry that I will not have the backbone to uphold my own respect in the classroom which can be fatal in how other students view the teacher. There are many boundaries and strategies in order to uphold a desired level of respect in the classroom that I am yet to learn. I am hoping that I will learn it while in the teaching licensure program at ODU.
Teaching to the Middle - As I previously mentioned in the What Do I Already Know? section, every teacher must decide whether to teach to the top of the class, middle, or bottom of the class. Ideally, I would like to teach to the middle and reach as many of my students as possible, if not all. This takes expertise in observing students and being able to interpret those observations to form an understanding of what you can get out of any given student. This will likely take one on one time with students as well as being able to apply strategies I'll learn in my time at ODU to adapt my teaching to each students needs.
The teaching philosophies that I currently most align with are Progressivism and Existentialism. The main reasons that I subscribe to these beliefs are because I want to place an emphasis on freedom and personal autonomy in my classroom. Another key contributer to this is the fact that I aim to use a Student-Centered Learning approach because I don't want the student to feel like my classroom is a dictatorship of any sort. In my experience as a student it was much harder to work for a teacher that I felt was in the role of a Teacher-Centered environment unless they had a profound ability to articulate their words into storytelling which I have only found in one teacher in my whole life. I want to use active engagement by asking the students questions that guide the lesson in the direction that they take it.
If a visitor walked in my classroom they would see a spread out but flowing classroom environment that showcased my students personalities in their own spaces like name tags and other small accessories. This spread out classroom that promoted collaboration mixed with the student personalization would reflect the Progressivism and Existentialism sides of my teaching philosophy. The visitor would see interaction and collaboration between my students as well as students influencing the flow of each lesson.
This was my AI generated image that represents what I want to be as a teacher because I want an emphasis to be on my classroom being more than just a place to learn book smarts but also lessons that make my students better members of society. This was supposed to be one image but I believe because I asked it to generate two different settings it thought I was asking for two different images so it gave me these two. It shows how I desire for my instruction to have a direct influence on my students behavior outside of the classroom.
Specific Prompt: I want one image with two different settings, one of the settings to be a highlighted child in a classroom talking to a teacher and the other setting to be that same child interacting with someone in a grocery store. Please make a cloudy transition in the middle to make the images mesh better.
I used stablediffusion.com to generate my image for the AI portion of this assignment. This website was a bite hard to work with as it didn't follow my prompts too well at first. I eventually narrowed it down to a good one but not without some error though because it still produced two images instead of one. I also used ChatGPT to help with the educational philosophies information because the AI assignment asked us to.

Hey Ian! I think it's amazing that you understand home life for students can be tough and you want to provide them a safe place when they come to school. I also think it's great that you want to not put yourself above the students. Showing them that even us as teachers make mistakes might make some students less afraid to mess up.
