I'm Kiley! I'm an Elementary Education major at ODU.
I was born in Virginia Beach and have lived in Hampton Roads my entire life. I really enjoy traveling around Virginia and visiting different parks and museums. Growing up in Hampton Roads I've attended 6 different public schools, and met a lot of teachers who inspired me to be an important part of my own students' lives. Throughout my life I've experienced a LOT of changes at home and having teachers who I could trust and talk to about my challenges really helped me continue to succeed in school.
I still have so much to learn about teaching! Obviously, I have so. much. to learn. However, the things that worry me most that I haven't learned yet are what to prioritize in my classroom and how to communicate professionally with everyone (bosses, colleagues, parents, students). I strive to be a safe place and be able to answer any and all questions for my students and their families, and if I'm unable to tell what to prioritize and when or even how to speak professionally and appropriately with these different groups of people I won't be able to do either of these things correctly.
I used AI resources (Magic School and Open Art) to create images and a quote of what an elementary environment would look like for students with a progressivist and/or essentialist teacher. I believe that students should be taught in a personalized and also student centered way, meaning that they have a lot of creative freedom with how they learn and also that they do a lot of their own work. With this in mind, I used Open Art AI to create images where students are collaborating and also using creative freedom, with minimal involvement of the teacher in that process. I also wanted to include a quote to put into words an ideology of one of these philosophies so I used Magic School. For a more detailed list of the AI that I used and how, follow the button below.
I created a vision board on Canva to demonstrate how my classroom will look! I have progressivism and essentialism philosophies when it comes to education. I believe that the purpose of school is preparation for what comes next. Regardless if ‘next’ is middle school or a lifelong career, we learn so that we are prepared. Two things my students will learn regardless of their age or curriculum, is critical thinking and social skills. These things don’t always come naturally or comfortably so by encouraging creativity and collaboration in my classroom I plan for my students to grow in both of these areas. My students will value each other. If we learn nothing else through collaboration, we will learn to respect each other. I aim to be their role model and guide throughout their education. I will complete assignments on my own alongside them for guidance and answer their questions in a way to encourage their own unique thoughts and conclusions.
Hi Kiley,
I agree that being consistent is very important, with consistency and fidelity challenging behaviors will go down, they will feel more successful, and they know that they can trust to understand what comes next. Communicating with your colleagues and students will come in time. I love the examples of your progressive essentialist classroom and techniques. The collaboration will build critical thinking and much more. -Kim Basilone
Hi Kiley,
I love how you created the vision board to show the teacher you will become. So creative! Although I lean towards more of an essentialist philosophy in education, I hope to be like you and incorporate some progressive techniques as well. You gave great examples of that.

Hey Kiley. The vision board you did was really impressive, I liked it a lot. I also loved the background of your powerpoint, but I do agree with your statement about every student have different needs. As the teacher it is important to accommodate each student. Good job with your author page! -Yasmeen
Your page is so fun! I bet you are a very fun engaging teacher! I love that you try your best to accommodate each student.
Catherine :)
Caleb- The vision board was super cool. You are gonna be a great teacher.
Hi Kiley! One thing I want to learn is how to communicate professionally with everyone too. I think it's super important and it shows that I know what I'm doing and that I can do it well. I will also incorporate essentialism and progressivism educational philosophies in my classroom because I think learning academically and socially will prepare them for the future. You will be a great teacher! -Hannah Smallwood
