Dear Parents/Guardians
Time flies and it is now the second week of Term 2! This is a busy but exciting term. In April itself, our school calendar is lined up with activities and events such as the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation, National School Games, our school’s Nanyang Festival of Arts, as well as Open House. While these activities keep our girls busy, they are often platforms that lift our girls’ energy, as they apply their learned skills and spend quality time with their peers to fulfill common goals.
Term 2 is also the term that marks the first Weighted Assessment (WA) for the year. While the students may inevitably feel the pressure of assessment preparations, the school has also spaced out the assessments to allow for better revision pacing and time for students to continue with other activities while preparing for their WA. We hope that with this arrangement, the girls can adopt a balanced and positive outlook towards learning for life. We urge parents to also guide our girls to manage their expectations and encourage them should they feel disappointed. In a rapidly evolving world, what we value most are our people’s zest for continuous learning and a healthy attitude towards problem-solving. Learning is a lifelong journey and not a destination.
We are also looking forward to our Global Classroom Programme (GCP). Our Secondary 3 students are going to travel as a class soon in May/June, while some Secondary 4 students are going on their special programme-based GCP. Later this year, between 13 and 20 November, the Secondary 2s will also be traveling to Malaysia on a two-day trip. Through these programmes, we hope to develop our students’ ability to navigate different cultural contexts as well as their adaptive thinking and independence. Your involvement in motivating the girls to adopt an open mind to embrace new experiences will be invaluable in helping them gain the most out of the programmes.
As we guide our girls on the three NYGH Power Domains – Power of Me, Power of Community and Power of Yet, we hope that our girls will learn to leverage their strengths to help themselves and their friends, be courageous in seeking support and adopt the growth mindset. Our girls are highly motivated individuals who set high standards for themselves. It is therefore very important that we help them to develop self-compassion and empower them to flourish.
I am very happy to share that our school is collaborating with Dr. Jacqueline Tilley’s research team from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, on a study to better understand how school and parents can best support high-ability students. This is an especially significant study for us as an established all girls’ school. Understanding the unique needs and experiences of girls from high-ability schools in Singapore’s context will allow us to be even more effective in nurturing healthy and happy young ladies, who can meet their optimal potential. In the coming weeks, we will be inviting you and your child to take part in this study, and I urge you to support us with your active participation.
Thank you once again for your continued trust in us, as we work hand in hand to make secondary school life a meaningful and joyful one for our young ladies.
Ms Siau Fong Fui
Principal

We are honoured that our Concert Band CCA has been invited to perform on Friday 11 April (7pm - 7.30pm or 8pm - 8.30pm) at The Esplanade under In Youthful Company programmes. To allow parents/guardians of our Secondary 2 students the time to support our students’ performances, we are shifting our PTM to an earlier time slot. On the same day, we are also inviting parents of our Secondary 2 students to an optional parenting talk on Education and Career Guidance (ECG) for Teens by our ECG Counsellor, Dr Tan Lay Theng. Please refer to the table below for the day’s programme.
The biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation for Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges will take place from 24 March to 6 May. Organised by the Ministry of Education, this event is a performance benchmarking platform for performing arts groups in schools to receive feedback from a panel of industry professionals for continuous learning and improvement.
The details of our participation are as follows:
This year, members of the public may view the SYF Arts Presentation performances in person at the venues or via livestreaming. Please note that seats at the performance venues are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Further information can be found on the SYF website (https://www.syf.gov.sg/home).
The 2025 edition of our Festival of Arts (FOA) is scheduled to coincide with the SYF Arts Presentation season, celebrating our students’ artistic accomplishments and creativity in April and May. The performing arts groups will be sharing both new and previously well-received pieces in their repertoire with the student population through lunchtime performances during combined recess times, and they will also share their SYF performance items with the wider school community through a series of FOA Family Concerts. This school-wide event hence provides all with access to a variety of arts performances.
The Family Concerts will take place on Saturday 26 April and 10 May. We warmly invite parents and family members to attend the live performances at the Family Concerts and support our student performers. The Family Concerts are ticketed events, with proceeds going towards the fundraising efforts of the school. Tickets for general audiences will cost $15, with a portion of tickets reserved for NYGH students only at a student rate of $8.
Further information, including ticketing details, are available at: foa2025.nygh.edu.sg
The website will be accessible from 7 April 2025 onwards.
Our school is proud to participate in the annual National Track and Field Finals, taking place on Friday 25 April from 1pm to 6pm at the National Stadium (1 Stadium Drive, Singapore 397629).
Students will be briefed on the necessary arrangements to make their way to the venue after their respective dismissal times (see table below). Our canteen will also be open so that all our students may have their lunch before setting off for the National Stadium. They will receive details on public transport options and designated assembly points nearer the date.
As this is a compulsory school event, we kindly request that any personal enrichment activities be rescheduled to allow students to attend and support their peers.
Additional details regarding drop-off and pick-up points will be shared later.
The National Physical Fitness Assessment (NAPFA) for Secondary 2 and 4 will be conducted from Week 6 to Week 8 this term. The five stations will be conducted during PE lessons.
The 2.4km run will be conducted at Hwa Chong Institution track on Thursday 15 May (3.30 to 6.30pm). In case of inclement weather, the alternative date will be Thursday 22 May. More information will be given to your child nearer the date.
All Secondary 2 and 4 students are required to participate in this National Assessment unless there is a medical certificate stating clearly that she is exempted from NAPFA.
The Term 2 WA schedule has been shared with your daughters. It will take place from Term 2 Week 2 to Week 8. This is strategically spread out so that the girls will have breaks in between and will not be overwhelmed. WAs serve as a tool for your daughters to understand their learning progress and how they can improve. It is not a definitive assessment.
The two-day NY Experience programme was successfully completed on 17 and 18 March. A total of about 340 Primary 6 students from 50 schools attended the programme. They went through hands-on activities and collaborative projects conducted by our student volunteers under the guidance of our teachers. On Day 1, the Primary 6 participants participated in engaging Science experiments and intriguing Math problems. On Day 2, they experienced exciting collaborative activities for English, Mathematics, and an interdisciplinary session conducted by Humanities and the Languages Departments. They were also treated to an hour of concert by five Performing Arts CCAs. The students gave positive feedback that they found this outreach programme enjoyable and meaningful. We thank all our staff and students for making this event a great success.
The refreshed theme for this year’s Open House on Saturday 5 April 2025 is ‘Girls who Lead, Women who Inspire’ as we celebrate female empowerment and inspire our girls to be the best for the world. This year, we will be starting the event with a grand opening by our Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe!
You may find out more about the Open House programme via our social media and school website.
In conjunction with World Sleep Day on 14 March, our students were shared tips on how to get sufficient sleep via the online Onion Newsletter for students. We would also like to share these tips with you through the following e-poster. Wishing you and family quality sleep and good health!
