Dear Parents/Guardians
Time flies and it is now Week 7 of Term 2. Thank you for partnering us in the girls’ secondary school journey.
This term has been a busy, but enriching one for the girls with a range of activities such as the National School Games, Bilingual Youth Model United Nations Conference (BYMUN), ComEd-SPICE, Nanyang Festival of Arts, Support Staff Week, Open House and the list goes on. We are happy that our girls have excelled in all the tasks, games and performances, but more importantly, we are extremely proud of them for demonstrating grit, tenacity and a strong sense of community. It has been very encouraging seeing how our girls cheered their hearts out for their peers in every school event and motivating each other to move forward against all challenges. In fact, together, our girls and staff have made NYGH a warm, safe and caring community, which supports everyone within it to be the best we can.
The girls are next looking forward to their Life Skills Programme and Week 10’s Special Programmes. The Secondary 3 cohort and some Secondary 4 students are even looking forward to their Global Classroom Programme. The students will all be ending the first semester of the school year with exciting activities, which I believe will form part of their sweet memories of their secondary school life. I thank you for supporting the girls’ learning beyond the classroom. Your belief in their all-round development makes a great difference to the girls’ desire to step out of their comfort zone to try new things, which is so important for their holistic growth.
Our Parent-Child-Teacher Dialogues (PCTD) will be held soon. Hope this will be a meaningful session for our students, parents and teachers to come together to discuss the students’ experiences, projects, aspirations and goals. To support the implementation of PCTD, there will be no school on 20 and 21 May 2024. We encourage you to listen actively to the girls and show a genuine interest in their sharing. Parents are often heartened to see how much the girls have grown and to learn about their aspirations and effort put into achieving their goals, which they may not usually share with you. Parents do not need to be content experts to make your daughters feel supported by you. Your curiosity about their work and experiences will give your daughters the assurance that they have your blessing, which will help them to thrive.
I would also like to share with you that our girls have started work on their preparations for the upcoming funfair, Carnival Vibrante 2024. This being the first year that we are having a funfair after a five-year pause, we will keep it a cosy school affair. Nevertheless, the girls have displayed great enthusiasm to make this a fun and meaningful event. We look forward to a joyous funfair on the first Friday of the next semester.
I am sure we are all looking forward to the coming mid-year school holidays. This will be a good opportunity for our girls to wind down and for families to spend some quality time together. We wish you and family a joyful June break.
Parents play an important role in a child’s development. Our parenting support programme aims to help parents expand their grasp of a child’s developmental phases and gain a better understanding of how to engage our teens. A series of parenting talks, as summarized in the table below, are thus planned for you between May and August.
3 May 2024 - Lunchtime Virtual Talk by Ms Delphine Ang
This is a virtual parenting talk specially arranged for the parents of NYGH on Friday 3 May (12noon – 1pm). The speaker, Ms Delphine Ang, is a certified teen coach and certified brain health professional. Her talk will focus on how we can create a supportive environment for teens and cultivate a thriving relationship.
The zooms details of the talk are as follows:

Passcode: 155509
We look forward to having you with us at this lunchtime parenting talk.
20 May 2024 - Pre-PCTD Online Parenting Talk
In line with PCTD, parents are invited to attend a talk on Monday 20 May from 8 to 9am. The title of the talk is "Character Strengths". Your child has been working with her Character Strengths for her learning and development, and this talk hopes to give parents an understanding of how knowing and applying our character strengths help us to thrive.
We encourage all parents to read about Character Strengths and take the free VIA Character Survey before the talk. They are available at https://www.viacharacter.org/. You will need to register for an account before you take the survey.
The talk will be conducted via Zoom and the details of the Zoom meeting will be sent in a separate announcement closer to the date of the talk. For parents who are in school during that time, you may access the talk from Lecture Theatre 2.
This is an optional talk, and NOT a prerequisite for PCTD.
17 and 24 August 2024 - Positive Parent Programme (Triple P): Parenting Support Services
Lakeside Family Services has been appointed by MSF since 2019 to deliver parenting support services to our school. Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) is an evidence-based programme that equips parents with techniques to promote children’s (aged up to 16 years) psychological, social and emotional competence. Triple P is built on a tiered system that provides different degrees of parental support.

Parents are strongly encouraged to sign up for the free seminars. The registration link is http://go.gov.sg/lfs-3psem-c2024.
Jolly June Well-Being Calendar
Our school's Positive Education Team has designed a "Jolly June" calendar for our girls to have some fun and meaningful activities during the break. It encourages students to appreciate being in the moment, express gratitude and compassion to others and take the time to be kind to themselves. The individual tasks may seem small but they all add up to improving one's well-being. Parents and guardians are encouraged to enjoy this calendar with your daughter and ward. (The “Jolly June” calendar will be sent to the students via the school email.) We wish you a jolly time this June with your daughter/ward.
Academic Support
During the upcoming June holidays, the teachers will be organising targeted academic support for selected students. The schedules will be emailed to these students and we seek your understanding to allow your child/ward to attend these session(s).
Self-Study Venue
The school library is open during the mid-year holidays. Students who are keen to return to school to do self-study or to enjoy the library facilities are welcome to do so. The opening hours are from 8am to 5pm during the non-protected vacation period (Week 1 and Week 4). In Weeks 2 and 3 (1 - 16 June), the library might be closed on certain days due to system maintenance. Students will be updated via email on the affected dates.
Canteen Operation Hours
One canteen stall will be operating until 1pm daily during the non-protected vacation period (Week 1 and Week 4). There will not be any canteen stalls operating between Week 2 and Week 3 of the holidays. Students who are planning to return to school have to make plans for their meals.
All Secondary 2 students will be participating in a museum-based learning programme at the National Museum of Singapore on 30 or 31 May 2024 as part of their CCE learning experience. The students will embark on a journey to learn about Singapore History through the stories behind the artefacts at the National Museum of Singapore.
A separate letter has been sent to you about the museum visit. You may also refer to the schedule below:
There will be NO transport provided for this learning journey. Students will make their own way to the National Museum and will be dismissed directly from the museum after the programme.
The students are in the midst of planning for Carnival Vibrante 2024, which will held on Friday 28 June 2024. There will be more than 45 stalls offering food (popcorn, ice cream, cotton candy, bingtanghulu冰糖葫芦), merchandise (bracelets, keychains), services (photo booths, henna, face painting) and games (escape rooms, haunted houses).
On Thursday 27 June, all students will end lessons by 12 noon. They will then proceed to set up their class stalls for the funfair. On Friday 28 June, the funfair will commence after the flag raising ceremony. Students will be dismissed at 2pm that day. For both days, CCA for students involved in the upcoming C division competitions will take place from 4pm to 6.30pm. More information will be provided by their CCA teachers.
All proceeds from this funfair will be donated to:
President’s Challenge
ART: DIS @ Bukit Merah
Muhammadiyah Welfare Home
TOUCH Community Services
Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore)
Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.
We thank you for your generosity and support in the purchase of funfair coupons for your daughters as well as the coupons pledged for our beneficiaries during the sale of coupons in April. With the pledged coupons, our invited beneficiaries will get to enjoy the stalls during the funfair. If you would like to buy and pledge more coupons for our beneficiaries, you may do so by scanning this PayNow QR code, and indicate PLEDGE at the Reference No by 10 May 2024.
Each funfair coupon is priced at $20. Kindly make payment in multiples of $20, so that we can translate that to the number of coupons for our invited beneficiaries.
We are happy to share that our Open House, which took place on Saturday 6 April 2024, was a huge success. More than 5000 people attended the event and we are heartened to receive positive feedback from the visitors. They appreciated the comprehensive overview of the school’s engaging and purposeful academic and co-curricular programmes, and they also enjoyed the interactions with our students and staff. The positive feedback was shared with all our students as they have all contributed to making our school a vibrant and welcoming community. In fact, our girls’ commitment and confidence, as well as the care they took to extend their assistance to the people they met have made a difference to their young visitors, who looked up to them as role models.
We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Parent Support Group for their unwavering support and help. Their dedication and hard work contributed significantly to the smooth running of the Open House, and we are truly grateful for their efforts.
It was indeed a day when the school came together to share how we, as a school, strive to be a beacon of the future.
