Dear Parents/Guardians
Greetings! It is now the eighth week of the first school term and we are delighted to share that our students have settled well into the new school year.
I am very happy that I have met the parents/guardians of our Secondary 1, 3 and 4 students, and am looking forward to meeting the parents/guardians of our Sec 2 students on 11 April 2025. Secondary school is a wonderful time for our young people to explore and develop their courage and curiosity as they learn and mature. It thus means a lot to the school that we work closely with you to encourage our girls to open their minds to different cultures and experiences, and give them space to try, make decisions, fail, bounce back and grow. The school will continue to provide our girls with a wide range of developmental opportunities, such as our Life Skills Programme (LSP), Global Classroom Programme (GCP) and Community Education (ComEd), and we are most appreciative of your unwavering support for these programmes.
I would also like to take this opportunity to share some important news with you regarding the future of our Nanyang Boarding School. After thoughtful consideration and discussions, our Nanyang Board of Directors have made the difficult decision to close the boarding school at the end of this year, as our lease will be coming to an end.
While this chapter is coming to a close, we are pleased to let you know that our boarding school experience will still be available as an enrichment option to our girls at the Hwa Chong Boarding School, which NYGH will work closely with. This ensures that your children can continue to benefit from the same nurturing and learning experience they have come to know and love. We will share more on this when the final plans are mapped out. Thank you for your understanding and we are deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in us as we make this transition as seamless as possible.
Let us continue to work together to provide our girls with the most conducive environment to grow and flourish. I would also like to wish you an auspicious Year of the Snake. Also known as ‘Little Dragon’, the snake symbolizes rebirth, good luck and vitality. May we all enjoy this great year to explore new opportunities and come out stronger and wiser! Thank you.
Ms Siau Fong Fui
Principal
Road safety is of critical importance to our community. The school works closely with the traffic authorities and our neighbours to keep our environment safe, especially with regards to the traffic situation during peak hours of morning drop-offs and after-school pick-ups. Please be reminded to adhere to the following traffic guidelines:
During morning drop-off at the front of the auditorium lobby, please note that you may drive onto either lane once your vehicle enters the school.
To mitigate traffic build-up at the entrance gate, which could lead to a long line of traffic on Linden Drive, please observe the traffic flow as you drive into the school and take the lane with fewer vehicles. This would ease and allow more drivers to enter the school for drop-off during the peak hours.
Please do not cross the centre divider on Linden Drive as you wait to turn into the school at the entrance gate. This would cause unnecessary bottlenecks at Linden Drive.
Given the expected high traffic congestion on rainy days, please set off earlier on such days.
Please strictly adhere to the speed limit of 15km/h on the school campus as well as the right and left turn direction at the exit gate.
We thank you for playing your part in safe driving and being mindful of the safety of other drivers, students, staff and the general community.
By now the Secondary 1 students would have been informed by their Form Teachers about their CCA allocation results and the follow-up actions to be taken. Parents may refer to the table below for the CCA allocation timeline:
Students may now purchase the school jacket directly from the vendor. Please note that the order window opens only once a year, and purchasing the jacket is entirely optional. We encourage you to check with your child/ward if she would like to place an order with your assistance.
The purchase link is: https://shop.shanghai-uniforms.com/product-category/nanyang-girls-high-school-preorder/. This vendor, Shanghai Uniform, also supplies the school uniform. However, please ensure you place your order only through this unique link rather than their general website.
Please note that the online order form will be available from Wednesday 26 February to Friday 14 March, 5:00 PM. Parents/guardians must create an account via the provided link, place their order, and complete the necessary payment directly. All available sizes and pricing details can be found on the website. If your child/ward requires a size that is not listed, please contact the vendor directly for further assistance.
The estimated delivery time is approximately two months after the closing date. Teachers-in-charge will notify students via email regarding the collection process for their jackets.
Most students, if not all, may opt to have their respective CCA design printed on their jackets at an additional cost. This arrangement can be made directly with their CCA at a later stage. Both the purchase of the jacket and the additional design are entirely optional. However, for the track pants option, only students from the Track and Field CCA are required to make a purchase.
We are happy to share that our Concert Band CCA has been invited to perform on Friday 11 April under In Youthful Company programmes organized by The Esplanade.
The performance details are as follows:
Date: Friday 11 April 2025
Venue: DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre at Esplanade
Time: 7pm to 7.30pm and 8pm to 8.30pm (Two sets of performances at 30 mins each)
We welcome all to join our students for an evening of music with programmes featuring both the full band as well as smaller ensemble pieces. (To allow our parents/guardians whose child/ward may be performing with the CCA and/or for parents/guardians who would like to catch the performances, the Secondary 2 Parent-Teacher-Meeting (PTM) on Fri 11 Apr will hence start earlier. Please refer to segment on Secondary 2 PTM for more details.)
Our students started the school year with three days of orientation (and four days of induction for the Secondary Ones), specially designed to prepare them for the year ahead. They will then end Term 1 with LSP on Friday 14 March. LSP aims to provide our students with opportunities to take part in activities for their holistic growth. Each level of students will undergo key activities offered specifically for their developmental needs and learning phase.
The table below shows the key activities for each level’s LSP. More information was shared with you in a separate letter earlier this week (Term 1 Week 8).
In the first Semester, all Secondary 1 and 2 students will experience the Community Education – SPICE programme. Through this programme, some students will interact with community partners and carry out collaborative work to understand the needs of the community. Having understood the needs of the community, the students will share their findings through different means with the school. By presenting their findings, we hope the students will also inspire others to act and deepen the school’s understanding of the wider community.
Programme details for the two lower-secondary levels are as follows:
Registration for the MOE-OBS Challenge programme is from 21 February to 14 March 2025.
Our Secondary 3 girls will be divided into two batches. Batch 1 consists of girls from classes 301 to 306, and Batch 2 consists of girls from classes 307 to 312.
Please e-Register your child through these links:
This year, the school will be organizing a Secondary 2 cohort GCP to Malaysia in November (more information to be shared later), a Secondary 3 cohort GCP to China in May/June and Special Programme GCP trips for students from different special programmes.
In line with the school’s efforts to prepare our students to be bilingual and bicultural with global perspectives, as well as to help our students gain a better understanding of China, the 6D/5N GCP trips to China are designed to meet these objectives. During the trips, students will be able to immerse themselves in cross-cultural experiences to strengthen their 21st Century Competencies, with particular focus on global literacy, adaptive thinking and collaboration skills. The cities included in this year’s Sec 3 Cohort China GCP are Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Suzhou and Zhuhai.
Here are the scheduled dates for the trip:
Some of the Upper Secondary students will be embarking on Special Programme GCP trips in May and June. (Details of other GCP trips taking place in Semester 2 will be shared later.) Please see table below for the trips for Semester 1. In addition to their special programme focus, all the above GCP trips provide ample opportunities for students to develop their cross-cultural competencies and global literacy.
We are honoured that our Concert Band CCA has been invited to perform on Friday 11 April (7pm - 7.30pm or 8pm - 8.30pm) at The Esplanade under In Youthful Company programmes. To allow parents/guardians of our Secondary 2 students the time to support our students’ performances, we are shifting our PTM to an earlier time slot. On the same day, we are also inviting parents of our Secondary 2 students to an optional parenting talk on Education and Career Guidance for Teens by our ECG Counsellor, Dr Tan Lay Theng. Please refer to the table below for the day’s programme.
A separate letter with more details will be sent to parents/guardians for Secondary 2 students nearer the date.
The annual Parent-Child-Teacher Dialogue (PCTD) is a platform for the child to share her learning and experiences with her parents. Through this process, we engage our girls in active reflection and encourage them to feel empowered in their growth and development.
We hope parents will see this as a precious moment created for your teenage child to share with you her self-discovery, interests and experiences. It is also an excellent platform for parents to learn how your child leverages her character strengths to seek growth and navigate challenges. Your interest in her unique strengths and trust in her will mean a lot to your child, contributing to her confidence building. We thus urge parents to listen to your child actively and affirm her during this dialogue.
This year, to accommodate the different programmes that our students are involved in (e.g. GCP), four days will be set aside for PCTD. The four days are Friday 23 May, Monday 26 May, Thursday 26 June and Friday 27 June. On a case-by-case basis, the Form Teachers, parents and students may also discuss and decide on an alternative PCTD time slot during the non-protected-vacation-period, should there be a need to do so. Each PCTD slot will be 20 minutes, and the session will be conducted online.
More details on the schedule and instructions to book a time slot will be sent closer to the dates.
It is important to cultivate good and purposeful screen use habits. In school, our students have been constantly reminded to practise responsible screen use and to disconnect to connect. We are glad to share that there have been a number of student ground-up initiatives to encourage their peers to self-regulate and spend quality time on bonding and pursuing interests instead.
At home, many parents may be keen to guide your children to manage their screen time too. Our Student Support Team has thus prepared this infographic to share with parents some tips. A strong parent-child relationship plays an important role in helping a child develop healthy habits.
Our Student Support Team (SST) also offers talks open to all NYGH parents to provide you with some tips on building a strong parent-child relationship. We invite parents to join us for April’s online sharing by our SST on Building Relationships. The talk will be held on 28 April 2025 from 11.30am to 12.10pm.
Complementing the “Parenting for Wellness” package, which was sent to you via Parents Gateway on 10 October 2024, the speaker will be referring to parts of the package during the talk. Do mark down the date and look out for more details about the talk nearer the date.
Since 2019, Lakeside Family Services has been appointed by MSF to provide parenting support services to Nanyang Girls’ High School. Triple P is an evidence-based programme that equips parents with techniques to enhance their children’s (aged up to 16 years) psychological, social, and emotional competence. This programme is structured with a tiered system, offering varying levels of parental support.
Please refer to the attached flyer for more information. You may use this link, https://go.gov.sg/lfs-iif2025, to indicate your interest in the various parenting programmes offered.
In addition to parenting support, you can get access to other community resources to support your family holistically. All services are fully sponsored by MSF.
The Secondary 1 Language Arts extensive reading programme introduces students to 50 critically acclaimed books from diverse genres. These books are available through a “reading cart” in class as well as on a special shelf in the library reserved for Secondary 1 students.
The Secondary 2 Language Arts curriculum broadens students’ reading through our subscription to the Straits Times IN. Only available via bulk subscriptions through schools, this magazine provides articles on current topics that are written for secondary school students, allowing students to develop their understanding of the world around them. As students discuss some of these topics in class, they will develop a deeper understanding of and gain different perspectives on current local and global issues. The cost of $14 per student for 20 issues (print and digital IN + Monday’s ST ePaper) for the year will be absorbed through miscellaneous fees.
As part of the study of their set text, Fahrenheit 451 for Secondary 3 Language Arts, the students were invited to participate in a unique exploration of historically banned books. The activity, a collaboration between the Secondary 3 3 Language Arts team and Yuzi Library, was designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking on the topics of censorship, freedom of thought and the power of the written word as the students read extensively beyond their set literature text.
To encourage all students to read widely and to be aware of different perspectives, the school has renewed “The New York Times Educational Digital Subscription”. Information on how new students can claim their free pass to the digital version of The New York Times will be given in February.
In addition, magazine subscription forms from magazine vendors have been distributed to the students via their Language Arts teachers. Subscription to the magazines is encouraged and is optional.
The Chinese Language and Culture (CLC) Reading Programme aims to engage students with a diverse selection of Chinese fiction and non-fiction texts. Through this programme, we seek to cultivate lifelong reading habits, enhance language proficiency, and broaden students’ understanding of the world. With your support, we are confident that this programme will be a meaningful and enjoyable experience for our students. The reading materials and associated costs are outlined in the table below:
