Dear Parents/Guardians
Time flies and it is now the second term of the school year! Hope you managed to enjoy quality family time over the March holidays and our girls are energised for the new term.
Term 2 is a busy but exciting term, lining up with our Bilingual Youth Model United Nations, Festival of Arts, National School Games and the list goes on. While these activities keep our girls busy, they are also platforms for our girls to enjoy learning beyond their classrooms, apply their learned skills and develop their capacity to work with different people in different situations.
We are also looking forward to our Global Classroom Programme (GCP). Our Secondary 3 students are going to travel as a class soon in May/June, while some Secondary 4 students are going on their subject-based GCP. Through these programmes, we hope to develop our students’ cross-cultural learning, adaptive thinking as well as their independence skills. Your involvement in motivating the girls to adopt an open mind so that they may enjoy the different new experiences away from home will be beneficial in conveying a coherent message to them.
Besides the overseas programme, our local programmes are equally exciting, providing great learning opportunities. These include our Life Skills Programme, Education and Career Guidance activities, Community Education activities and the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme. We hope that the myriad of activities planned for our girls will provide them with a balanced education experience and broaden their horizons. Most importantly, we want our students to grow up as healthy and flourishing all-round individuals with a zest for lifelong growth and discovery.
Our students generally set high expectations for themselves. The teachers will be supporting them to manage their work load, self-care and expectations. As we guide our girls on the three NYGH Power Domains – Power of Me, Power of Community and Power of Yet, we hope that our girls will learn to leverage their strengths to help themselves as well as their friends in school. We also encourage parents to partner us in developing our girls’ growth mindset. Your assurance that you believe in them and value their efforts will mean a lot to the girls. Together, we guide and empower our girls to manage life’s ups and downs with a clear sense of fulfillment and agency.
To the parents of the Secondary 1 students, your daughters will be experiencing their first Weighted Assessment (WA) in secondary school in Term 2. Helping them to manage their expectations and encouraging them to see learning opportunities rather than gaps will allow them to appreciate things in perspective and in turn gain confidence in their ability to independently seek help, overcome challenges and try new things in secondary school. As shared by our school counsellor, Ms Grace Cheah, at her talk to Secondary 1 parents on 8 March 2024, “If I could give my daughter three things, it would be the confidence to always know her self-worth, the strength to chase her dreams, and the ability to know how deeply loved she is.” (Unknown).
Thank you for your continued support and close partnership with us. We look forward to yet another meaningful school term for our girls.
The annual Parent-Child-Teacher Dialogue (PCTD) is a platform for the child to share her learning and experiences with her parents. Through this process, we engage our girls in active reflection and encourage them to feel empowered in their growth and development. This also sets aside time for parents to listen to their child actively, to hear from their child what excites her, how she overcomes her challenges and her self-discovery about her strengths and areas to work on. Your interest in her and encouragement will mean a lot to your child.
This year’s PCTD will take place on Monday 20 May and Tuesday 21 May. Each PCTD slot will be 20 minutes.
Sec 2, 3* and 4 PCTD sessions will be conducted via zoom. Sec 1 parents will be invited to school for a face-to-face PCTD session as well as to view the Sec 1 students’ inter-disciplinary projects.
More details on the schedule and instructions to book a time slot will be sent closer to the dates.
Before the commencement of PCTD on Monday 20 May, the school will be organising an online parenting talk by our School Counsellor from 8 to 9am. This talk aims to provide parents with support on managing communications with growing up teens. This optional talk is open to all Sec 1 – 4 parents. More information on the talk will be sent to parents together with the PCTD invitation.
Table 1 below summarises the special programmes planned for the students in May before the school term ends. (Please refer to the segment on Life Skills Programme (LSP) and MOE-OBS Challenge Programme and Secondary 1 Chinese Cultural Camp for further details.)
LSP for Secondary 1, 2 and 4 students will take place in Week 9 from Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 May. The Secondary 3 students will be participating in the MOE-OBS Challenge Programme either in Week 8 or Week 9 of Term 2. Table 2 below shows the programme planned for each level of students.
To enhance students' understanding and appreciation of the Chinese culture, each year we will organise exciting activities for the Secondary 1s. This year, the Secondary 1s can look forward to the activities as shown in Table 3.
The 2024 edition of our Festival of Arts is a celebration of our students’ artistic accomplishments and creativity in the month of April. This school-wide event includes an array of live dance, music and theatre action, proudly presented by the performing arts CCA groups, Art Elective Programme and Higher Music Programme students. Nanyang Festival of Arts 2024 will be a bustling and exciting time for the Nanyang Girls’ High School community, and we warmly invite parents, family members, and friends to join in the festivities. All proceeds from the Festival of Arts 2024 will go towards the six selected charities identified by the school - President’s Challenge, ART:DIS @ Bukit Merah, Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, TOUCH Community Services, Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore) and Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.
The performance schedule of ticketed CCA productions is as follows:
Further information, including ticketing details, are available at: foa2024.nygh.edu.sg
The Term 1 Progress Report will be ready for Sec 2 to 4 parents to view via the NYGH Portal from Wednesday 3 April. Parents will view the scores, grades and subject teachers' comments. Students may request for teachers’ 1-to-1 consultations for academic coaching.
The Term 2 Weighted Assessments will begin in either Week 4 or 5 for Sec 1 to 4 students. Details of these assessments have been emailed to all students on Thursday 21 March.
The National Physical Fitness Assessment (NAPFA) for Sec 2 and 4 will be conducted from Week 5 to Week 7 this term. The five stations will be conducted within PE lessons. All Sec 2 and 4 students are required to participate in this National Assessment unless there is a medical certificate stating clearly that she is exempted from NAPFA.
The 2.4km run will be conducted at Hwa Chong Institution track on Tuesday 23 April (4pm to 6.30pm). In case of inclement weather, the alternative date will be Thursday 25 April. More information will be given to your child nearer the date.
The annual National School Games Track and Field Championship Finals will be held at the National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub on Friday 19 April. This is also one of the biggest sporting events for schools where more students will get to watch, support and cheer as a school for their Track and Field peers.
This is a whole school event. Students will be dismissed by 12 noon that day and will make their own way to the stadium. The estimated end time of the event is 6pm and students will be dismissed from the stadium after the event. More details will be shared with the students.
All students are now able to purchase the school jacket directly with the vendor via this link: https://shop.shanghai-uniforms.com/product-category/nanyang-girls-high-school-preorder/.
Shanghai Uniform, which is the vendor for the school uniform, is also the vendor for our school jacket. However, please note our school jacket can only be purchased via the above unique link. You should NOT purchase our school jacket via the vendor’s website.
Please also note that the online order form is available up to Friday 12 April 2024, 5pm. Parents/guardians will need to create an account once you click on the link, place your order, and then make the necessary payment directly. The sizes and costs are all available in the link. Should your daughter/ward require any other sizes that are not stated, she will need to contact the vendor directly for more information. The estimated delivery will be about two months after the closing date. The jackets will then be delivered to the school and distributed to the students via their CCA.
Most students, if not all, may arrange to have their respective CCA design printed on their jacket at an additional cost, and this can be arranged with their own CCA later. The purchase of this jacket as well as the additional design are entirely optional. For the track pants option offered, only students from Track and Field CCA will be required to purchase them.
Our upcoming Open House is scheduled for Saturday 6 April 2024 from 8am to 2pm. Under the theme "Anchored in Values, Venturing Forward", this event aims to provide a comprehensive insight into the school's rich academic and co-curricular offerings while nurturing future leaders who aspire to make a positive impact on the world.
We will feature three talks covering various aspects such as the school's mission, student admission procedures, and talent development opportunities. Additionally, Hwa Chong Institution will be present to share their programme.
Apart from the talks, visitors will have the opportunity to explore 12 interactive stations, ranging from curriculum showcases to demonstrations of co-curricular activities such as CCA, MakerSpace, and Food Studies just to name some. The Parent Support Group (PSG) will operate two booths where visitors can interact with parents, ask questions, and purchase PSG merchandise collaboratively produced with the Art Elective Programme (AEP) students. Two new stops on the trail, the Global Classroom Programme showcase and Community Education showcase, will further enrich the visitors' experience.
The Open House has been promoted through the school's official social media channels and a dedicated website, which went live on 11 March 2024. Our teachers and students are all excited about this event and we look forward to yet another successful Open House to share our exciting school programmes and experiences with parents and their primary school children.
We are also proud to share with you the success of our recent NY Experience on 11 and 12 March. The success of this event would not have been possible without the commitment of our staff and students in making it a meaningful experience for our participants. About 300 Primary 6 female students from 50 primary schools participated in this programme, and our girls touched the hearts of these Primary school students because they sincerely wanted to make a difference. We are very appreciative of our girls’ positive attitude and desire to share.
The programme featured a wide array of activities conducted by different departments within the school. The Chinese, English, Humanities, Mathematics, and Science Departments organised workshops and hands-on activities tailored to provide insights into the various subjects. Additionally, the Performing Arts groups delighted the audience with a special mini-concert, showcasing the talent and creativity of our students. The Innovation DSA team also manned a booth, providing information about our innovative programmes.
NY Experience served as a platform for our students to develop and showcase their leadership skills and creativity too. The participants gave positive feedback and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn new knowledge and skills in a collaborative and fun environment. Participants particularly appreciated the effort put in by the staff and student helpers, highlighting the warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the event.
