Dear Parents/Guardians,
Greetings! Hope all of you have had some rest and quality family time over the September school holidays.
This is the final term of the school year, and our students are sitting their End-of-Year Examinations soon. As our girls tend to set very high standards for their results, it will be useful that we help them to manage their expectations and encourage them should they feel demoralized during their revision or when they receive their results.
The teachers and I have been encouraging our girls to make sure that they continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some students have been observed to have had very little sleep during this revision period. Fatigue caused by sleep disruption may potentially affect their academic performance and even affect their physical and mental health in the long run. It is thus important that family and school send a consistent message to our girls to pace themselves and manage their sleeping hours.
During the examination revision period, many students may also reduce their physical exercise and not eat healthily. Preparing for the examinations does not mean depriving one of breaks, good routines and quality me-time or time spent with one’s loved ones. It is important that we develop our students into flourishing lifelong learners and ensure that they do not have the misconception that examination revision means sacrificing other important aspects of life.
I would also like to highlight that Term 4 is not just about examinations, and there will be many exciting programmes that the girls can look forward to before the protected school break begins. In their growing up years, it is important that our girls enjoy learning and develop a healthy lifestyle which will contribute to their resilience and positivity.
Last but not least, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your trust and partnership with my team and me. Working closely together, we can create a coherent and supportive environment that fosters our girls’ holistic growth and development.
Wishing you a pleasant and fruitful term ahead!
We would like to resurface the list of protected vacation dates which was communicated in our Term 1 Week 2 letter to all parents at the start of this year, as we sincerely hope that parents do not plan overseas family trips before the protected breaks commence, so that our girls can complete all school-planned programmes in totality.
To encourage work-life balance and to allow students time to recharge, the school will continue to implement protected breaks during the school holidays. No school activities will be conducted during these breaks, except for special arrangements made for students who are taking part in competitions in the early part of the coming term and some Secondary 3 and 4 Global Classroom Programme (GCP) trips. (All GCP trip dates will be shared with students involved by end of Term 1.) The protected vacation dates this year are as shown in the table below:
It is important that our students develop healthy habits, are self-regulated and know how to say ‘no’ to prohibited products. The school has been engaging our students regularly on matters pertaining to vaping and educating them on its harmful effects as well as the consequences of violating the law.
E-vaporisers are illegal in Singapore. Under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, the possession, use or purchase of e-vaporisers carries a maximum fine of $2,000. It is also an offence to import, distribute, sell or offer for sale e-vaporisers and their components. Any person convicted of such offences is liable to a fine of up to $10,000, or imprisonment of up to six months or both for the first offence, and a fine of up to $20,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months or both for the second or subsequent offence. All prohibited tobacco items will be seized and confiscated.
MOE takes a firm stand against vaping. Vaping is categorised as a serious offence. When students are caught using or in possession of e-vaporisers, the prohibited product will be confiscated and their parents will be informed. The schools will report the offender to HSA and also manage vaping-related offences through existing disciplinary frameworks. These include taking school-based disciplinary actions, such as suspension. Students caught vaping will also be placed on cessation support programmes where counsellors will guide them through their cessation journey to effect long-term behavioural change.
Parents have an important part to play in their children’s education. There are resources and relevant information that you can access on Parent Hub. You are encouraged to have a serious conversation with your children about vaping to prevent it from becoming a life-long habit. More information about the harms of vaping is available on Parent Hub at https://go.gov.sg/parent-hub-vaping.
The Secondary 2 students will be opting for their Secondary 3 Subject Combination this term. Here are some dates that the girls have been told to take note of:
It is important that our girls take ownership of their decisions. We strongly encourage parents to journey alongside your child with active listening and constructive conversations, which will help her gain a clearer understanding of her strengths, aspirations and even plans on how to manage her priorities. Such clarity will in turn help her to explore her options with confidence and a great sense of commitment.
The Secondary 2 Dramafest marks the culmination of the Secondary 2 students' drama lessons. The students will present their class play at Dramafest’24. Each class will perform the original plays they wrote and directed.
Limited tickets are available for NYGH students (from all levels) and NYGH staff, as well as parents of performers. Instructions on how to register for a ticket will be emailed to students one week before Dramafest. Parents may register through their daughters.
If you are unable to secure a ticket, you may still view the performance via YouTube. The link to the YouTube live stream performance will be sent to parents via Parents Gateway on 28 Oct 2024. In addition, students who are on the waitlist to secure a ticket may also opt to view the live stream performance from Lecture Theatre 1, NYGH, on the day of the performance.
The Women’s Leadership Conference is an annual conference helmed by the student leaders of the school. Students from other schools, aged 15-16, will also be invited to this conference. In spite of its title as a women’s leadership conference, both male and female students are welcome to take part in this conference to encourage a broader range of perspectives. We are also very happy that this year, students from our partner school in Johor Bahru, Sekolah Tun Fatimah, are also able to join us for this conference, adding to the participants’ cross-cultural learning.
Details of the conference are as follows:

We will have a new security company (Securistate Pte Ltd) for the provision of security services for the school with effect from 1 October 2024. We seek your understanding and patience during this transition period for the new security company to familiarise themselves with the school's operations to provide a safe and secure environment for all. Thank you very much once again for all your cooperation in making the traffic in and just outside the school at Linden Drive a smooth and pleasant one.
