Dear Parents/Guardians
Greetings and welcome back to the new school year! To the parents/guardians of our Secondary 1 students, congratulations on your child/ward’s successful completion of the Primary School Leaving Examination and she is now entering a new phase of life. We hope you will find joy and pride joining our warm 108-year-old Nanyang family with a rich heritage.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Mabel Goh, our former Vice Principal/Academic Studies, on her new appointment as Principal of West Grove Primary School, and am delighted to introduce you to Ms Gaynor Teh, who has taken over Ms Goh’s duty as Vice-Principal/Academic Studies. Together with Mrs Mae Ho (Vice-Principal/Strategic Development), Ms Agnes Ng (Vice-Principal/Student Development) and Mrs Tan-Sim Joo Yee (Bursar), we have a shared commitment to lead our NYGH Team in providing our girls with an excellent education, that develops them holistically.
In NYGH, we value the strong partnership between school and parents, in which we will continue to foster a culture of collaboration and respect. A positive school-parent partnership anchors a child’s learning, growth and well-being. We encourage parents to be engaged in your child’s development and maintain open and collaborative communication with our staff. We will role model as best partners to support our girls to grow healthily and flourish.
May I also urge parents to continue to guide our girls to take care of their mental and physical health. As students who set strict standards for themselves, our girls may sometimes underestimate the importance of ample rest and nutrition, while they work hard to meet their desired targets. Let us work together to help our girls practise good sleep hygiene and eat healthily.
Our staff have worked diligently preparing for yet another year of engaging learning and meaningful experiences for our students. Our students are enjoying their orientation and “Back-to-School (BTS)” Programme, and I am happy to share with you that their energy level is high. The Secondary 1s are also settling well into school. In addition to the orientation, these youngest NYGH family members will be having their Induction Programme this coming week, which aims to help them transition from primary to secondary school.
I am looking forward to meeting all of you personally too. You will receive a separate cohort invitation letter to our upcoming Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTM). In NYGH, we value regular engagement with the parents and we encourage parents to participate actively in these sessions as we journey with our girls in their developmental years.
It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I thank you for your enormous support. Let us embrace this new year with hope and positivity. As I have told the girls on the first day of school, we will continue to embrace our Power of Me, Power of Community and Power of Yet, making NYGH a conducive environment for learning, care and growth.
Wishing you a splendid year ahead!
Ms Siau Fong Fui
Principal
We regularly write to parents/guardians to update you on school events and developments. The information is disseminated mainly via Parents Gateway (PG), and we seek the cooperation of parents to download the Parents Gateway mobile app to receive letters, notices and consent forms.
The school is transitioning to the MOE School Cockpit. Parents of 2025 Secondary One and Two students will not need to have access to the NYGH Portal. All essential information will be relayed through Parents Gateway.
Parents of Secondary Three and Four students may continue to access the NYGH Portal for important information. To ensure the effective dissemination of information, please provide us with an active email address by updating the email address on the Portal if you have yet to do so. This updated email address will be your new login ID.
We have also gone paperless with an e-Student Handbook, which will be disseminated by February. More information about the school will be printed in the e-handbook.
Please note that the school observes a five-day workweek. Our General Office operates from 7 am to 6 pm on school days and is closed on Saturdays. School activities on Saturdays are kept to a minimum.
Our staff are not required to share their personal phone numbers and are not obligated to respond to work-related messages after school hours, except in emergencies. For non-urgent matters, we encourage parents to use official communication channels such as email or the General Office phone number. Our staff will address these messages during official working hours.
If you must contact your child/ward for urgent matters during school hours, you may contact our General Office and provide our staff with your child/ward’s name and class. Our staff will assist to inform your child/ward. Please note that students are expected to put their mobile phones aside during class time throughout the day.
The last day of school for AY2025 is 10 November 2025.
For dates on school events and protected vacation periods*, parents may access the school master calendar at NYGH Termly (https://sites.google.com/nygh.edu.sg/nanyangtermly/school-calendar) or via the school website (nygh.edu.sg) under Quick Links.
We urge parents to avoid making vacation plans during term time which may result in your child missing any school event. Students should attend for all curriculum lessons and school events/programme for their learning and development.
To encourage work-life balance and allow students time to recharge, no school activities will be conducted during the protected vacation periods, except for special arrangements made for students who are taking part in competitions in the early part of the coming term, as well as selected student programmes. The protected vacation dates are as shown below:
We sincerely hope that parents do not plan overseas family trips during the non-protected break periods, so that our girls can complete all school-planned programmes in totality.
Our Chinese New Year celebrations will be held on Tuesday 28 January 2025 and school hours will be from 8.15am to 10.45am. The General Office will be closed at 12.30pm.
Please note that Friday 31 January 2025 is Home-Based Learning (HBL) day and students do not need to report to school. School will resume on Monday 3 February 2025.
We remember the less fortunate among us while we celebrate as a school this festive occasion. Students and staff are encouraged to contribute items to create hampers for our beneficiaries. Students may also donate a portion of their hongbao money towards these fundraising efforts.
On Wednesday 5 February 2025, the 9th day of Chinese New Year, a staff lunch will be held and the school day will end at 11.30am.
As part of our school’s commitment to sustainability in 2025, we are excited to launch the Bring-Your-Own-Cutlery (BYOC) Campaign. This initiative aims to reduce the use of single-usecutlery by encouraging students and staff to bring their own reusable cutlery to school every day.
Starting in Term One, disposable cutlery will no longer be provided for all school activities with catered food. The canteen stores will gradually phase out their existing stock of disposable cutlery. Through the BYOC Campaign, all students and staff will play an active role in promoting environmental sustainability, further reinforcing our position as a leader in championing eco-friendly practices.
A strong school-home partnership is essential for our youths’ healthy and holistic growth. Here are three areas that we can work together to foster our partnership in supporting our children: Respectful Communication, Role Modelling and Having Real Connections
Respectful Communication
Listen to and understand each other’s perspectives and concerns regarding each child
Communicate kindly using official channels
Respect each other’s time during working hours
Role Modelling
Show our children the skills and values they need in life:
(a) Find joy in everyday experiences with our children
(b) Instill confidence by encouraging responsibility and believing in our children’s abilities
(c) Model good values in words and actions
Having Real Connections
Establish good habits for our children to stay confident and in control of their technology use
Build strong bonds through shared experiences and meaningful conversations
Provide a balanced mix of engaging online and offline activities
Our Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTM) are scheduled to keep you informed of 2025’s school direction and programmes. The dates and time of the Secondary 1 to 4 PTMs are as follows:
Since 2019, Lakeside Family Services has been appointed by MSF to deliver parenting support services to our school. Its Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) is an evidence-based programme that equips parents with techniques to promote children’s (aged up to 16 years) psychological, social and emotional competence. This programme is built on a tiered system that provides different degrees of parental support. The school will regularly update parents on the talks and activities that Triple P organises, so that you will benefit from the programme optimally.
You may also refer to the following video clip to find out more about Triple P: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18MCnXrVXq4ouXuPqmrQ6iyTOc9mBL5I2/view?usp=sharing
Children entering into adolescent and secondary school go through a number of major changes. This major life transition can be both exciting and daunting for both children and parents. To help parents navigate this important transition, an online transition talk for parents of Secondary 1 students will be offered on Friday 17 January 2025 from 8 to 9.30pm.
This informative session will provide parents with valuable insights and practical tips to support your child's emotional, social, and academic well-being. We would therefore like to encourage parents of our Secondary 1 girls to attend this online talk. The talk details are shown below.
You may also refer to the attached brochure for more details.
We are thrilled to announce a special screening of I Not Stupid 3 《小孩不笨3》, directed by one of Singapore's most celebrated filmmakers, Mr. Jack Neo. This thought-provoking film delves into themes of family, parenting, and perseverance, offering a heartfelt reminder of the importance of understanding, empathy, and encouragement within our homes and schools.
In collaboration with Mr. Neo, NYGH has reserved an exclusive cinema hall at Golden Village VivoCity for this event, which includes a post-show dialogue with the director himself. Join us on Saturday, 18 January 2025, from 10am to 12.15pm for the screening, followed by the dialogue from 12.15pm to 1pm. Tickets are priced at $16 each. Do look out for further information from the PSG and PG. Let’s come together as a Nanyang Family to reflect, connect, and start the year on a positive and inspiring note.
NYGH will be celebrating its 110th anniversary in 2027. To celebrate the coming 110th anniversary, we are excited to present our special edition NYGH Revomax Flasks, designed as a parent-child set to symbolise the bond within our Nanyang Family. Revomax is known for its vacuum-insulated drinking flasks, which keep hot beverages warm for up to 18 hours and cold drinks chilled for up to 36 hours. The flasks feature an innovative, twist-free, leakproof cap that can be operated with just one hand.
The 950ml flask, priced at $110, is tailored for teens with its bold, vibrant design of our school campus that is perfect for their active school days. The 592ml flask, available at $88, is ideal for adults, featuring a sleek, elegant look inspired by NYGH’s iconic clock tower, with red and white accents reflecting our Hongzi logo. For families, you may like to consider purchasing a bundle set at $168 (a pair of 950ml and 592ml) to complement the use together. These flasks are not just practical keepsakes but a meaningful way to commemorate this milestone together. Do look out for our posters to find out more on how you can purchase your set! We look forward to your ardent support for our coming celebration.
In 2024, the school went through a review of our lesson timetable to sharpen our NYGH’s design for teaching and learning experiences. This year, we will run a new timetable comprising single 45-min periods and double 90-min periods. This change is intentional, as by varying the lesson durations, we hope to cater to different types of content, student preferences, and levels of engagement. Short lessons work well for quick skill-building, while longer sessions allow for more complex exploration and interaction. By understanding our learning objectives and student needs will allow which lesson duration works best for achieving the desired outcomes.
The safety of our students is of top priority. We seek your understanding and cooperation as we work together to ensure the safety of our students and to show consideration for nearby residents.
Please note the following measures regarding both human and vehicle traffic:
We strongly advise our students to commute to school by public transport as the school is well-served by public buses and the Downtown Line.
Parents are to alight your child at the drop-off/pick-up point in front of the auditorium lobby, in the vicinity of the school. Please do not stop at the school gate without entering the school to alight your child at all times, as this will compromise safety of all road-users, including your child.
Given high traffic congestion on rainy days, please set off earlier on such days for smoother traffic.
Please do not park outside the school (along Linden Drive) during the afternoon and evening pick-up period. This is hazardous to other road-users and violates the traffic rule, which prohibits waiting within the vicinity of zebra crossings. To alleviate the traffic situation along Linden Drive, parents’ vehicles are allowed to enter the school compound to park in front of the auditorium lobby. However, parking space within the school is limited. Whilst waiting, please turn off the car engine as required by law. Please note that the speed limit on the school campus is 15km/h.
The side gate along Dunearn Road is locked during school hours. On school days, the side gate is opened from 6.15am to 8.30am and from 2pm to 4pm. After 4 pm, students may exit the side gate using their student ezlink cards via the full-height turnstile.
The School Health Service team will be at our school from 18 February to 3 March 2025 to conduct the annual health screening for all Secondary 1 and 2 students. Classes will be rostered during school hours for the health screening. Please note that students are expected to bring along their health booklets for the health screening exercise.
The Health Promotion Board will be offering the HPV vaccination to all female students in secondary schools. The vaccine used is Cevarix. The vaccination team will be at the school from 7 to 13 March 2025 to vaccinate the Sec 1 and 2 students.
The Mobile Dental Clinic will be stationed at our school from 24 March to 26 May 2025 (tentative). The School Dental Services will be conducted for Secondary 1 and 3 students during this period.
Parental consent is required for HPV Vaccination and School Dental Services. Details will be sent via PG in early January to parents.
Secondary 1 students may continue to use their Primary School Smart Cards (SSC) for concessionary travel until end-April. While waiting for their Secondary SSCs to be ready, students may top up their Bus Concession Pass for Secondary School Students using their Primary SSCs to enjoy concessionary travel through any of the following channels:
SimplyGo Ticket Office
SimplyGo Kiosk (accepts NETS and credit/debit card)
Assisted Service Kiosk
Top-Up Kiosk
POSB/DBS and OCBC* ATMS
Top-up Terminal at Community Centres (accepts only credit/debit card)

The registration for National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) will take place in our school on Friday 1 August 2025 (afternoon). Students who are Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents and have attained the age of 15 years in 2025 are to register for their NRIC. Details will be sent to parents closer to the date of registration.
At MOE’s Committee of Supply Debate in March 2020, MOE launched the National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP) for schools and Institutes of Higher Learning to help students strengthen their digital literacy. One component of the NDLP is the initiative where every secondary school student will own a school-prescribed Personal Learning Device (PLD).
All Secondary 1 students can look forward to purchasing a PLD with this MOE initiative. More information will be provided later in Term 1.
Students who need financial assistance in purchasing the PLD may approach our school’s accounts department to enquire further after the dissemination of information.
To exercise appropriate, responsible and empowered use of technology, all students must endeavour to lead and assist others in building positive digital experiences, recognise that our actions have consequences for others and participate in using technology for the common good. In the coming weeks, we will engage all students in understanding the RUP for using technology in their everyday classroom and learning. The RUP can also be found in the NYGH Student Handbook, which will be shared with the students in mid-Term 1. We encourage parents to continue conversing on responsible use of technology with your daughter.
Gemini (Education Edition) will be available to all NYGH students through the NYGH Google Workspace. While Generative AI (GAI) tools can significantly enhance learning opportunities, using them responsibly and ethically is crucial. The ethical use of GAI is incorporated into our Citizenship and Character Education (CCE) lessons. You can find a policy outlining acceptable uses, restrictions, and consequences for misuse in the NYGH Student Handbook. Teachers will continue to guide students on using GAI properly in their learning. As "Respected Members of Society" and "Empowered Learners," our students must maintain integrity, exercise critical thinking, and demonstrate creativity when using GAI to support and enhance their learning.
Please be informed that photographs or video images of you and your child/ward may be taken during school activities and events such as classroom lessons, CCA, school camps, or school concerts. The school may use and publish such photographs or video recordings in school publications, the school’s website, social media channels, or other communication channels.
Enclosed is the GIRO deduction schedule for the year 2025 (Annex 1). The school will send an e-mail to parents/guardians to inform you about the details of each GIRO deduction prior to the deduction date. Kindly ensure that you have adequate funds in your bank account on the scheduled deduction dates. For unsuccessful GIRO deductions, a $10 administration charge will be imposed.
The monthly full school fee rate for the different groups of students in 2025 is summarized in the table below.
Students who are recipients of the ESIS/BSP/CLEP scholarship and students who are in AEP will continue to receive school fee subsidy according to the terms and conditions stipulated by MOE.
