Dear Parents/Guardians
Time flies and we are now in the 7th week of Term 3. The term started with Carnival Vibrante’2024, our first funfair in recent years, which we commemorated Youth Day and Racial Harmony Day. Our girls have also been actively involved in many activities, ranging from CCA competitions to Community Education (ComEd-SPICE) programmes, not to mention the O-level oral examinations for the older girls.
Next, we will be enjoying our Cross-Country cum National Day Celebrations, as well as our C.R.E.A.T.E Day, Founder’s Day and Teachers’ Day celebrations. While there are several exciting activities awaiting our girls, they are also gradually winding down and preparing for Term 4 and their End-of-Year Examinations. We are confident that our students are capable to pace themselves and continue to strive in their positive vibes.
Balancing study and a healthy lifestyle are all about finding harmony between academic responsibilities and personal well-being. We hope our girls can create a structured schedule to plan ahead and set realistic goals to manage their stress. They will prioritise their health, making sure that they exercise regularly, eat well and get enough sleep. We encourage parents to spend quality time with them too, particularly in providing them support and advice when they share successes and challenges with you. Let us continue to work together to keep our students engaged and energized. We look forward to a flourishing semester ahead.
C Division National School Games
We wish our lower secondary athletes all the best as they prepare and forge on for their National School Games in Term 3. As mentioned in the Term 2 letter to parents, the school will continue to send supporters to cheer for our athletes and parents/guardians are welcome to watch the games in Term 3. Do look out for related announcements that will be posted on Parents Gateway when your daughter/ward’s class is assigned to support the respective games.
Special Dates to Note for CCA sessions
Suspension of CCA In View of End-of-Year Examination Preparations
The last week of CCA is Term 3 Week 10, after which CCA will be suspended for all students to prepare for their end-of-year examinations. CCA will resume from 21 October 2024.
C.R.E.A.T.E. Day this year falls on Wednesday 14 August. It is an exciting opportunity for our students to showcase their learning and growth. This interactive event encourages students to be inquisitive, innovative, and community-minded. Through a variety of formats such as poster sessions, presentations, and workshops, students will present their projects on topics ranging from arts and humanities to science and technology.
There will be no timetabled lessons for all four levels on C.R.E.A.T.E. Day as we celebrate our students' creativity and achievements. Students will report to school as per usual. The programme, which runs from 8.30 am to 2.00 pm, will be shared with the girls in due course.
The Nanyang Schools Alumni Association (NSAA) will be hosting the 107th Founders’ Day Celebration on Saturday 17 August 2024 at our school. This year’s theme is ‘Colorful Dreams, Century of Heritage’.
The festivities will kick off with a carnival and an art station, Dream Studio, from 9:00am to 12:00 noon. Thereafter, the inter-generational lunch will be held in our school hall from 12 noon to 2.30pm. There will be performances by students from NYK, NYPS, NYGH, and the NSAA Dance Group.
If you are keen to join in the carnival and/or lunch, you may purchase the tickets here. Please refer to the link for further details.
Our school will be celebrating Teachers' Day on Thursday 29 August. The theme for this year is Our Village Heroes!. Just like how it takes a village to raise a child, the teachers have put in a lot of effort in nurturing the students and a concert will be held in their honour. The students will be dismissed at 10:30am. This will give them time to go back to their primary school to visit their teachers. If you are picking your daughter up from school, please do so by 11am.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the MOE Art Elective Programme (AEP). Our school is proud to be among the first two schools in Singapore to offer AEP and will be celebrating this significant milestone together with Hwa Chong Institution with a combined exhibition titled 传承 LEGACY. The exhibition will be open for public viewing from Monday 19 August to Friday 27 September at Nanyang Girls’ High School, and from Tuesday 1 October to Thursday 31 October at Hwa Chong Institution.
As part of the series of celebratory events organised by the two schools, there will also be talks by distinguished AEP alumni, who will share their professional journeys and contributions to the arts. The guest speakers include:
Ms Dee Chia, Deputy Director of Audience Engagement at the National Gallery Singapore;
Mr Lee Kow Fong (阿果), renowned local illustrator;
Mr Lim Kok Boon, Master Teacher (Art) at the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts (STAR); and
Ms Yap Lay Bee, Group Director of Architecture & Urban Design at the Urban Redevelopment Authority Singapore. (Both Ms Dee Chia and Ms Yap Lay Bee are also NYGH alumni.)
We look forward to celebrating the legacy and future of art education in our schools with all students and parents. Further details will be shared with students via email and published on school social media.
Post-Examination Programme
Before the last day of school on 8 November 2024, the girls may look forward to an exciting range of activities in Term 4. These post-examination activities serve to help our students find a good closure and be confidently ready for the next phase of their growth.
The details of the programme will be shared with parents nearer the dates. We encourage parents to leverage these programmes to hold conversations with your daughters. You may bring in your daughters’ character strengths and explore with them how they can use the three powers (Power of Me, Power of Community, Power of Yet) to grow and flourish.
The post exam programme dates are as shown below.
Activities Taking Place After the Last Day of School (Before the Protected Vacation Period)
Sec 2 Malaysia Global Classroom Programme (GCP)
In our ongoing efforts to cultivate civic-minded stewards with global perspectives, our Secondary 2 students will be embarking on a two-day GCP. This programme in Malaysia is aligned with the Ministry of Education’s “Knowing Asia” initiative, which focuses on understanding our neighboring countries to enhance our students' 21st Century Competencies (21CCs) such as civic, global, and cross-cultural literacy.
During this trip, our students will explore Malacca’s major historical and cultural sites, interact with Malaysian students, and gain valuable insights into Malaysia’s economy through visits to key businesses. This experience aims to provide our students with a deeper understanding of the opportunities and thriving developments in the region.
The scheduled dates for the trips are as follows:
Batch 1 (11-12 November): Classes 201, 202, 207
Batch 2 (12-13 November): Classes 203, 204, 209
Batch 3 (13-14 November): Classes 205, 206, 211
Batch 4 (14-15 November): Classes 208, 210, 212
Secondary 4 Work Experience Programme (WEP)
We are excited to announce that our Secondary 4 WEP will be running again this year from 18 to 29 November. This valuable two-week programme aims to give our students insight into the world of work as we firmly believe that real-world exposure is essential for students to develop the skills and knowledge needed for future success.
We will be partnering esteemed organizations from different sectors (e.g. health, law, information and communication technology, dentistry) to offer our students the opportunity to gain practical insights into what it means to work in these industries. To give the girls an authentic experience, they will be required to undergo a rigorous process of submitting application forms and attending interviews.
NYGHT* Fiesta for Four Levels
To celebrate the end of the school year, the student leaders have planned for a party – NYGHT Fiesta. This will be held in our school hall on 7 November 2024 6pm - 8pm. More information will be shared with you and the girls later.
This festive gathering will be filled with fun activities, refreshments, photo booths and opportunities to connect with their friends and strengthen the sense of community that makes our school so special. This event is an optional activity, students are encouraged to participate if they avail themselves.
