Dear Parents/Guardians
It is now the second school semester, and we hope the June break has provided you and your family an opportunity to enjoy some quality family time.
Term 2 was an exciting term of National School Games, Festival of Arts, Life Skills Programme and Global Classroom Programme. The students’ learning beyond the classroom was varied and experiential, and together we hope that the rich learning will help our students broaden their world view while they gain a deeper insight into their strengths. Such experiences also took our girls out of their comfort zones and helped to nurture them into adaptive individuals and better team players.
While they gained some rest over the school holidays and got themselves recharged, our students also started the first week of Term 3 with a joyful and meaningful funfair, Carnival Vibrante’2024. Although it was a funfair open only to the internal school community, the class bonding developed through the funfair preparations and the creative-thinking and entrepreneurial skills learnt were invaluable. Tied to our commemoration of Youth Day and Racial Harmony Day, the girls also gained insights into various community services as well as the different cultures and traditions while having lots of fun during the funfair. We would also like to thank the Parents Support Group for your wonderful food stall, which brought the staff and students so much joy and sweet memories with the delightful range of yummy traditional snacks.
As mentioned in our previous letter, all proceeds from this year’s funfair will go towards charity. We are happy to share that through this funfair, we have raised over $35,000 worth of coupon sales for the six identified beneficiaries. [The six beneficiaries are President’s Challenge, ART:DIS@ Bukit Merah, Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, TOUCH Community Services, Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore) and Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.]
Our girls have just had their Youth Day holiday. Given their exposure and experiences, we trust that our girls understand their responsibilities as our future leaders and are inspired with a sense of agency. Arrangements will be made for our girls to have meaningful interactive sessions with their seniors. Some of our alumni will be coming back to school to share with their juniors their experiences as young leaders and contributors to our community. As our students strive to develop their sense of identity and purpose, we hope that such opportunities to interact with positive role models will help them identify with the qualities needed for them to develop into respected members of society.
In the month of August, we will be celebrating our National Day and our school’s 107th Founder’s Day. Many of our girls will also be involved in the C Division National School Games. Term 3 is thus yet another busy and exciting term, requiring our girls to manage both their academic work and co-curricular activities, while having some celebratory moments as a school. Our teachers will continue to work closely with our students to provide them with the care and support they need. We are also heartened to note that with the concerted efforts to promote positivity, we are seeing our girls’ proactive actions in practising self-regulation and self-care, as well as a growing interest in promoting the growth mindset and initiating efforts to create a supportive environment for everyone.
A big thank you for your trust in us. We value our partnership with you, and together we will provide our girls with a wholesome and all-round education. I wish you more healthy and happy days ahead.
Triple P Seminars
Lakeside Family Services has been appointed by Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) since 2019 to deliver parenting support services to our school. Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) is an evidence-based programme that equips parents with techniques to promote children’s (aged up to 16 years) psychological, social and emotional competence. Triple P is built on a tiered system that provides different degrees of parental support.
We would like to remind parents about the Triple P Seminars on 17 and 24 August 2024.
If you have not already signed up for the above seminars, do consider them. Parents who have attended past Triple P seminars have given good feedback that the talks are relevant and helpful. The registration link is http://go.gov.sg/lfs-3psem-c2024. These seminars are all free of charge.
Individual Consultation Sessions
Parents who prefer having individual consultations on parenting or family matters may also register for the Lakeside Family Services – Individual Consultation Sessions.
You may use the link below to indicate your interest.
These sessions are all FREE OF CHARGE and CONFIDENTIAL.
Online Grandparenting Triple P Seminars
Research shows that grandparents' involvement in their grandchildren's lives significantly shapes their identity and imparts positive values. This involvement also provides valuable bonding opportunities. When grandparents positively engage with their grandchildren, it results in closer relationships and stronger family ties. Whether a grandparent is a guardian, a babysitter, a playmate, or takes their grandchildren on outings, they can foster closer bonds and positive relationships with your children.
Lakeside Families for Life at Community (Lakeside FFLC) is thus organizing the Triple P Seminars for Grandparents. These seminars aim to equip grandparents with positive grandparenting strategies to help their grandchildren develop emotional regulation skills for better behavior. The online seminars are on Friday mornings on 26 July and 2 August 2024 from 9:00-11:30 am and 9:00-11:00 am, respectively.
Please encourage your child’s grandparents to take part in these seminars. This is the registration link: https://www.booking.gov.sg/public/services/LWe3daxG/events/V6N8gMek
We hope that your child's grandparents will join us for a time of fruitful learning of the Triple P grandparenting strategies to help in your parenting journey.
In line with PCTD, Mrs Chua Mei Hong (HOD/Student Management) conducted an online talk on “Character Strengths” on Monday 20 May from 8 to 9am. The intent of the talk was to give parents an understanding of how knowing and applying our character strengths help us to thrive.
For parents who have missed the talk, we have enclosed a summary of the talk content for your perusal. You are also encouraged to take the free VIA Character Survey (https://www.viacharacter.org/), to gain a better understanding of your character strengths as well as how this approach works. You will need to register for an account before you take the survey.
With character strengths in mind, we encourage parents to leverage your personal character strengths as well as your child’s character strengths in your conversations, activities and problem-solving experiences together. You may want to try out the SPECS approach (see summary) in your conversations with your children and appreciate the Power of Me, Power of Community and Power of Yet together.
The SPECS Approach for Giving Feedback
Following her virtual parenting talk specially offered to NYGH parents on 3 May 2024, Ms Delphine Ang is offering a free virtual parenting masterclass, Thriving Families and Thriving Children, on 8-10 July (8-9.30pm).
Participants may learn how to build and nurture thriving relationships with their children from this masterclass. There will be a few topics covered to address the pressing concerns of parents with anecdotes, real-life examples and tips.
Parents who are interested may find out more about the masterclass and register using this link: https://delphineang.ahlper.com/page/z8E2
As your child progresses from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4, her study interests, education and career aspirations may change, and she may reach a juncture where she has uncertainties on her goals for future study and career paths. This is normal as she is still at an exploratory stage. In our school, we encourage our students to talk to their teachers or ECG counsellor when they need advice on ECG matters.
Besides the teachers and ECG counsellor, parents may also journey alongside your child and have constructive conversations with her, which will help her to explore her options with confidence. Our ECG Counsellor, Dr Tan Lay Theng, has therefore prepared a set of conversation tips for parents. Parents may want to adopt the T.A.D approach as shown in the table below during your conversations with your children.
We wish our lower secondary athletes all the best as they prepare and forge on for their National School Games in Term 3. The school will continue to send supporters as a class or CCA to cheer for our athletes and parents/guardian are welcome to watch the games. Do look out for related announcements that will be posted on Parents Gateway when your daughter/ward’s class is assigned to support the respective game.
The last week of CCA sessions is Term 3 Week 10 before CCA is suspended for all students to prepare for their end-of-year examinations. CCA will resume after the examinations.
We will be celebrating our 59th National Day on Thursday 8 August. The Annual School Cross-Country will be integrated with National Day celebration. The whole school will celebrate the nation’s birthday at Jurong Lake Park.
On this day, student helpers will report at 7.30am while the rest of the school will report at 8am at the park. The celebrations will end by 11.30am.
More information will be given via Parents Gateway nearer the date.
This year, the school will be celebrating our 107th anniversary on 15 August (Thursday). The theme for our celebrations is “一〇七:当我们同在一起, The Power of Community".
Details of our Founder’s Day cum Annual Prize-Giving Day Programme will be shared with the students nearer the date. Students will be dismissed from school at 12.30pm on that day (Students with CCAs on Thursday may still be required to attend CCA after dismissal from the day's programme at 12.30pm.)
The school continues to practise and celebrate Eat with your Family Day, which was launched in 2003 by the Centre for Fathering (CFF).
Eat with your Family Day is held on the last Friday of each school term, and thus the school will close at 5pm on 30 August and 15 November 2024 to allow everyone to leave school early to enjoy a meal and spend quality time with families.
We wish you in advance a happy family get-together on this very joyful day.

The Chemistry Practical Examination is on 13 August while the Biology and Physics Practical Examinations are on 16 August. The timetable will be issued to the students by mid-July.
