As the school year winds down, we are reminded that every exam season is more than a test of knowledge — it is also a journey of perseverance, resilience, and effort. As parents, your encouragement and affirmation can make all the difference—reminding your daughter that her worth is not defined by numbers on a page.
In this edition of NYConnect, we invite you to celebrate not just the results, but the full picture of your daughter's growth and self-discovery along the way.
Here, you’ll find ideas on how to affirm your child’s hard work, suggestions for creating meaningful family moments after the exams, and heartfelt reflections from our students on what they have learned about themselves through the process. As they relax and recharge, may these shared stories remind us all that true success lies in the growth and joy found beyond the grades.
Here's to a resounding close to Term 4!
In this edition of Parenting Sense, we share ways to support your child emotionally by celebrating effort and progress, fostering a growth mindset, and affirming her strengths regardless of exam outcomes.
Nord Anglia Education Insights: What to Say—and Not Say—When Exam Results Roll In
This article by Nord Anglia Education highlights the importance of validating emotions of our children and praising their efforts over ability in examinations. Through staying calm, “being disappointed alongside your child,” rather than reacting with judgment, the article affirms that grades don’t define a person and that reinforces growth through encouragement. Click on the link to find out more ways of affirmation.
This article emphasises giving children emotional space to process disappointment, and supporting them with questions like, “Is there anything we can do to help?” Instead of dismissing feelings, the article advises standing by them and offering reassurance.
Our Parent Support Group (PSG) parents have kindly offered suggestions on creating meaningful family time during this post-exam season. We hope these ideas inspire you and your family to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy moments of rest together!
As the exam season draws to a close, it is just as important to celebrate the effort put in as it is to take time to unwind. In this segment, our students share how what they have learnt about themselves from their pre-examination preparations and what they engage with after the exams.
Secondary 3 student Nadia Lim takes a closer look at how her peers prepare for exams—their habits, struggles, and strategies—and shares what they have come to realise about aspects of balance and personal growth in the process.
What does post-exam repose look like to our students? Here are some short snippets on what's on our students' minds after the exams:
The Board of Directors presented a plaque commending Mdm Liew for her good work in nurturing generations of students.
On 1 January 1967, Mdm Low Pei Kim was officially appointed the school principal. Mdm Low graduated from the 12th batch of Normal course of our school in June 1933. In 1934, she went to Guangzhou for further studies at the Affiliated High School of National Sun Yat-sen University (国立中山大学附 属中学高中部) where she majored in Economics. She taught at Qifa School and served as Dean of Curriculum at Ma Po Hua Nan Girls’ School (麻坡化南女校) before returning to serve her alma mater on 1 May 1946. She was to be the first in the tradition of an alumna at the helm of the school.
As the school principal, Mdm Low generally kept to the systems laid down by her predecessor, making only minor changes to the appointment of key personnel. Mdm Cao Yu Hang (曹玉航), a graduate from St John’s University in Shanghai who joined the school in 1961, was appointed Discipline Mistress. Mdm Chen Chin Chang remained Dean of Curriculum. The post of the Library Director was taken up by Mr Lee Seng Tiong (李成忠), a history graduate from the National Taiwan University who joined the school in 1963. He served his post for 35 years before his retirement in the year 2002.
On 25 February, at 4pm, the Board of Directors, together with staff and students of the school, hosted
a banquet in the newly built school hall to celebrate Mdm Liew Yuen Sien’s retirement. During the celebration, Chairman of the Board, Mr Lim Keng Lian, represented the Board to present Mdm Liew a golden plaque embossed with the words “桃李春风” which meant that her work, like the wind in spring had sown seeds far and wide – a fitting accolade for the far-reaching impact of her work on women’s education in the region. Representatives from the staff and students from both the primary and secondary sections also presented tokens of appreciation to Mdm Liew.
