Lunch Menu # 3 (Week of April 27-May 1)
Dear Parents,
We’ve noticed a shift in the morning energy at school. Lately, many of our students are arriving in the classroom still "plugged in" to the digital world. Whether it’s a conflict that started in Roblox, a disturbing video seen on YouTube, or a heated exchange on Viber, these online experiences are following our children through the school doors, affecting their focus, emotions, and friendships.
To address this, I recently sat down with Ms. Jana (our Elementary School Counselor), Ms. Bisera (Elementary Teacher), and Mr. Igor (IT Specialist). We all agree: the digital landscape is moving faster than ever, and we need a unified front to navigate it.
The digital world offers incredible opportunities, but it also carries heavy baggage. We are seeing an increase in:
Social Friction: Conflicts from gaming platforms like Roblox spilling into recess.
Exposure: Students discussing violent or mature themes encountered on YouTube.
Cyber-Bullying: Harsh language and exclusionary behavior via messaging apps like Viber.
Real Risks: The very real dangers of inappropriate content and potential contact with online predators.
Because this is a shared challenge, we are launching SCREEN SMART, a weekly communication series designed to bridge the gap between home and school digital lives. Every week, you can expect practical insights and updates to help you stay ahead of the curve. Our goal is straightforward: By the time the final bell rings for summer break, we will have provided you with a comprehensive toolkit of recommendations to ensure your children have a safe, balanced, and positive onscreen experience during the holidays.
This is serious work, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By sharing information and setting consistent boundaries, we can keep our students safe and supported.
We deeply appreciate your partnership and look forward to getting SCREEN SMART together.
CEESA Math Competition
I was a proud principal this past week as Nova hosted the first-ever fifth-grade CEESA Math Competition. Typically, CEESA traveling events are reserved for students in grades 6 through 12, making this a special and groundbreaking opportunity for our younger learners.
We welcomed 12 teams from Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, all coming together to celebrate the power of fifth graders’ thinking. Students were challenged to think deeply, solve complex problems, and collaborate effectively. Throughout two full days of competition, the teams gave their all and demonstrated perseverance, creativity, and teamwork.
Mr. Matthew led the organization of the event, and we are incredibly grateful for his efforts. He designed engaging and innovative games that kept students motivated and excited about mathematics.
This event was about more than solving math problems. Students connected with peers from different countries, built new friendships, and experienced the joy of learning together. For many, it was their first time visiting the country, and they left with a deep appreciation for our country and our school community.
It was truly an honor to host such a meaningful event, and we look forward to seeing this new tradition continue in the years ahead.
Elementary Beacons of Belonging Club
At Nova, as in all schools, we want students and staff to feel a strong sense of belonging and community. Our “Elementary Beacons of Belonging Club” is one way we bring this to life, with students intentionally spreading kindness across campus. Recently, club members invited peers to give pre-written notes of appreciation to a teacher of their choice. The notes include messages such as, “You are a great teacher,” “You make learning fun,” and “You make a big difference in my life.”
Today, one of our students delivered one of those notes, and it made the teacher’s day. She was so excited that she ran right up to my office to tell me about it. What makes this initiative especially powerful is that it spans divisions, with elementary, middle, and high school students all participating.
This kind of cross-grade connection helps build a strong, positive school community. I am so proud of these elementary students.
With this, I wish you a great week ahead.
Warm regards, Julie
