Parents with Kids of age group 6 to 12
The phase 1 of the service included two stages which the Listen Beyond Silence team executed at Shukhan heigts, Gandhinagar Gujarat.
Team of ethnographer and volunteer visits the society a week before the service to understand the cultural composition, religion, family status, kind of job, family system, through focused group discussion on range of subjects. Aim of the research is to understand the existing knowledge and problems of the parents about their child development.
At second stage the intention of the workshop is to indulge parents with some range of activities which aims at bridging the communication gap between mother and father around the child’s development. Developing parent’s understanding of child’s behaviour and the changes that s/he undergoes.
Filling out the registration form :
The parents were giving registration form which had certain details essential to understand the occupation and composition of the family. A permanent database generatio for further research
Ice breaking activity :
The workshop starts with certain phyical activities which aims at bringing all the senses to the present moment. where we introduced them to a game called FALL of TRUST, a game to be played in two and we asked each set of parents to form team to experience the game, similarly for kids too, the activity aimed at making the parents comfortable with each other and eliminates hesitations and boundaries. It will be follwed with another activity SINC the TAALI which aimed at getting the whole group sinc together which made them burst into laughter and they started enjoying and acknowledging the presence of group which will together go through an experience curated by us, After which there is a short introduction to build familiarity within group.
Reflective Tools :
Both parents and children where given a set of questionnaire which they were required to fill. This activity aimed at making parents aware about their confidence about their child’s preferences and that what is reality.
Draw your world :
Moving ahead on to the next activity with the parents, meanwhile drawing sheets and colour pencils are given to the kids and were asked to sketch their family pictures.
Perception Tool :
Both the parents are required to map their’s characteristics as per their perception and where then compared to identify though similarity and throw light on differences if any.
Parenting booklet - Child development milestone :
At the end of the workshop as a parenting tool parents receives information about their child development through various stages from 6 year to 12 the most fertile age of child’s mental development. At the end of the information their’s a activity for parents to observe and map their child’s mood throughout the day at various interval, parents can read their child’s mood pattern for a week by pasting expression stickers on the given mood mapping sheet. consciously done activity may enable parents to start observing and mapping their child’s behaviour on a daily basis.
Let's play a game :
The session ended with a popular lemon spoon race. After all the heavy weight cognitive activity a fun game ended the session with banters and laughters, a mix of sour and sweet tails to take home on a sunday.
Reaching and convincing the parents for the workshop was difficult due to ambiguity around service.
Expert session played a very important role in trust development.
Games should be planned in a way that the parent and child doesn't feel defeated.
Gaps in post activity briefing
Marketing of the service and the takeaways for the parents have to be more clearly defined.
Infrastructural limitations have to be taken care before the workshop.
Absence of elderly guide due to nuclear family structure.
Parents had confusion after the behavioural mapping and they felt that the activity did not gave them any specific revelation about the child.
