A video compilation outlining the initial service launch and the impact
The Social Impact and influences of a service such as Akkad Bakkad would be as outlined by the graphic below.
The involvement of siblings would lead to a better cohesion in the family.
The act of interacting with and getting to know someone who has a special sibling, like themself would help the children attain acceptance and gain confidence.
Would lead to the over all well being of the family and a more sensitised society.
This would encourage more people to join the social sector and create job opportunities.
OBSERVATIONS AND INFERENCES
Siblings are sometimes unaware of the capabilities of their special siblings.
Special children act different at different ages. A child in his pre-teens often seeks attention, while a teenager is more concerned about how the outside world perceives him.
Sibling with a smaller age gap bond as friends much easier than siblings with a wide age gap, specially when the special child is younger. In such cases the sibling often takes on the role of a protector and care-giver, rather than a friend.
Every condition has it’s own set of characteristics, abilities and needs. Therefore, focusing on a certain age group of children, with a certain condition, and with a certain age gap between the siblings, would be a way forward.
PROPOSED PLAN FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS
Hiring Special educators, therapists and volunteers to help in the expansion of the service. Targeting a single disability within a specific age bracket, at a time.
PROPOSED PLAN AFTER FIVE YEARS
Counselling for Parents who’s child has just been diagnosed with a disability. From the start Akkad Bakkad hopes to help the parents attain acceptance and focus on their overall family wellbeing.
Early intervention sessions for the child would involve the sibling as a strong stakeholder and would work on their relationship and towards the mutual growth of all the children.
Development of an application as part of an online service for families that are unable to avail the centre based service of Akkad Bakkad. Parents can register for a nominal amount and enter the interests and abilities of their children and receive a list of system generated activities for their children.
PROPOSED PARALLEL PLANS
Organising and conducting awareness campaigns and funding events on days like International Sibling Day, World Autism Awareness Day, etc.
Conducting counselling sessions for Parents focused on nurturing siblinghood.
Organising tours for families by collaborating with itinerary planners or tour organisers.
