Girls’ Volleyball: Girls volleyball had a big week with 3 matches going 3-0 on the week! Two of the matches went to 5 sets, with Needham prevailing 3-2 in both of them! Setter Bella Lee racked up almost 100 assists on the week. Sadie Stants had 12 aces, on top of a 15 point serving run in the Milton match up. Lillian Soulia served 6 aces against Milton to secure the 5th set win! Many players contributed big this week!
Girls’ Soccer: The Needham Varsity girls soccer team played Walpole at home on Tuesday, September 16. The match ended 1-1 with Senior Michelle Faynstein scoring Needham's own goal. Freshman Maggie Peterson saved a penalty shot with six minutes remaining in the match to preserve the tie.
On Thursday, September 18, 2025 the Needham HS Varsity girls soccer team traveled to Milton. Unfortunately, the Rockets were on the wrong side of a 1-0 loss. The girls hope to get back on the winning ways with a home match at Memorial Park against Westwood on September 20th.
The Needham high school varsity girls soccer team bounced back at Memorial Park against Westwood winning 7-1. Sophomore Cate Goodband scored two goals, junior Izzy Marino scored two goals, seniors Michelle Faynstein and Hannah Levine had one goal each and freshman Belen Schreier scored a goal. Sophomore Syd Kalaw picked up 4 assists, Junior Izzy Marino had an assist, Sophomore Sam Levine had an assist and sophomore Alex Brueggeman had an assist.
Boys’ Soccer: Boys’ Soccer went 2-0 on the week with wins over Walpole and Milton.
Boys’ Golf: The golf team went 2-2 this week with home wins against Framingham and Natick and a pair of losses against Braintree. In the win against Natick, the team tied their season high in points with Wyatt Ali shooting even par, Nick Buckley +1, Beckham Matusik +3, and Jack O’Neil and Jack Bagley at +4.
Field Hockey: Varsity field hockey had their first win on Wednesday against Weymouth. Senior, Molly Pearlman had three goals while Sophomore Emma Damman had two. Freshman Kathryn Brinkhaus had her first goals ever for varsity with two on the night.
Girls’ Swim and Dive: Girls’ Swim and Dive got their first win of the season with an 85-54 win over Braintree! Next up, the team takes on Acton-Boxborough this Thursday.
Football: The Rockets lost their second home game by a score of 36-7 against Lincoln-Sudbury. Although the defense hung tough with a few three and outs and a takeaway, the offense struggled until the final moments of the game when Tyler Langford hit Caden McNamee for a 40 yard touchdown catch. They'll look to rebound vs Walpole at home on October 3.
Boys’ Cross Country: On Tuesday September 16th the Rockets toed the line against the number 2 ranked team in the state,Natick.
Natick put on an impressive display of speed and depth taking the first six places, defeating the Rockets by a score of 15-49. Captain Sam Gustat positioned himself in the Natick lead pack for the first two miles of the races, and made several attempts to break out of the box of Natick runners that surrounded him on the riverside trail. He finished in 6th preventing a Natick sweep. Seniors Skylar Levin and Captain Elliot Bass were the next two Needham runners across the line. Skylar, a rookie XC runner, and Elliot ran well together to close the gap to Sam Gustat. Captain Joe Bonavolanta and junior Zayan Hussain also had improved performances as the team’s 5th and 6th runners. Two rookie sophomore XC runners, Connor Bobbin and Gabe Mineo, made their Varsity 5k XC debuts with impressive runs, placing 4th and 7th for the team respectively. The Rockets showed improvement despite the loss. The time gaps between the 1st and 5th runners closed by 39 seconds compared to our first meet. Needham’s pack of two through seven runners worked well together, pushing and encouraging each other during the race. The Rocket’s pack’s ability to close the gap to the front runners in upcoming races will be critical to the team’s success in the late season championship races.
On Saturday, September 20th the team ran in the classic Manchester Invitational against top Northeast Regional competition. The Rockets entered 4 teams in competition - Freshman 2.1 mile, JV-2.1 mile, JV-5k and Varsity Large School 5k Championship. The Freshman boys had an impressive start to the day finishing 5th of the 20 teams/223 runners in the 2.1 mile Freshman race. Caleb Gilbreth (13th) led the way for the Rockets James Shepard (43rd) and Adam Pfaff (49th) continued their improvement, steadily working their way up through the field. In the Large School Varsity 5k Sam Gustat led the way in 78th place. He was followed by Sklyar Levin (105th), Connor Bobbin (130th), Gabe Mineo (136th). Elliot Bass (171st) showed real grit, picking himself up after falling in the woods, moving back up in the field to finish as our 5th runner. The team placed 22nd in the 35 team, 236 runner field. This event was a great learning experience for the team, especially the 3 rookie varsity runners (Skylar, Connor and Gabe) who had strong performances in their first championship format XC race.
This week the Rocket Boys square off against Framingham and Newton North on Framingham’s Farm Pond course on Thursday, Sept. 25th.
Girls’ Cross Country: The Needham Girls XC team had an amazing week of racing! On Tuesday, 9/16 the Varsity team defeated Natick at Elm Bank with a score of 24 to 31. Senior Greta Hammer ran 19:42 to win the race. She was followed by Junior Madison Roach in 20:04 and Sophomore Eva Scharf in 20:05. Natick then had four strong runners in before Needham's 4th, Junior Marisa Williams in 8th. Junior's Maiva King and Sidney Gilbreth, followed closely by Senior Janie Urban completed Needham's top 7 placing 10th, 11th and 12th.
On Saturday, 9/20 the team traveled to historic Derryfield Park in New Hampshire to compete in the 50th Manchester Invitational, where they faced a competitive field of New England teams. Senior Captain Greta Hammer won the extremely hilly race for the 2nd time in three years in 18:29. The team placed 5th out of 25 teams with 178 points, just three points behind the 4th place team of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Needham's second scorer was Junior Madison Roach, who ran a stellar race and placed 31st with a time of 20:52. Sophomore Eva Scharf also raced extremely well and placed 39th with a time of 21:10. Needham's 4th scorer was newcomer to XC Junior Claire Cianciolo in 21:51 in 52nd place. She was followed closely by Juniors Sidney Gilbreth in 62nd and Alessia Uyenoyama in 68th place. Senior Captain Katie Burns ran 22:28 for Needham's final top 7. Needham moved up two team places from their 2024 placing.
Demonstrating their team depth, the Junior Varsity team won their 5k race with a score of 41 points!! Junior Maiva King ran an excellent race and placed 2nd with a time of 22:01. Junior Marisa Williams racing extremely well followed closely in 5th place with a time of 22:38. Senior Delia Rauch placed 8th in 22:54 and Sophomore Serena Tanna placed 10th in 23:08. Junior Ava Conti placed 21st in 23:44, followed by Junior Casey Canzano in 23:45. Junior Aviva Tarsky placed 24:34 for 37th place to complete Needham's seven JV 5k racers.
Other meet highlights include Senior Captain Adah Rosen placing 3rd in the JV 2 mile race and Freshman Emily Jones placing 12th in the 2 mile Freshman race.
Next up: Needham Girls will face Newton North and Framingham at Farm Pond park in Framingham on Thursday, 9/25.

Girls’ Volleyball: Girls volleyball went 2-0 on the week with 3-0 wins over both Braintree and Walpole. Senior Julia Burns led the offense with 15 kills in the Walpole match. Senior captain Sadie Stants earned Boston Globe Player of the Week recognition as well! They improve to 3-1 on the season and move up #2 in the latest Globe rankings.

Girls’ Soccer: The NHS Varsity Girls soccer team won its first home match at Cricket field against Brookline 3–0. Senior Michelle Faynstein scored two goals. Junior Izzy Marino had the third goal and also contributed two assists. Sophomore Syd Kalaw had an assist. The defense kept another clean sheet led by Seniors Chelsea and Maeve Newman.
NHS girls varsity soccer played away on 9/11 at Braintree. Needham was victorious 1-0 on a first half goal by freshman Joy Lee, assisted off a corner kick from Izzy Marino. Needham’s defense did an excellent job of minimizing chances, with freshman Maggie Peterson being awarded “player of the match.”
Boys’ Soccer: Boys Soccer had a strong second week of the season as they outscored opponents 9-2 over 3 games with 9 different Rockets earning a goal or assist. The team went 2-0-1 on the week to bring their overall record to 4-0-1. The Rockets had a dominant performance against Brookline on Tuesday, but only had a tie to show for it. They then trounced Braintree 4-0 on Thursday and Lincoln-Sudbury 4-1 on Sunday in a non-conference win. Senior Conor O'Brien led the team this week with 4 goals including a hat trick against Lincoln-Sudbury. Matteo Naretti was next with 2 goals and 2 assists. Jacob Towvim and Lucas Berner solidified the back line, with Berner also supporting the offense with 2 assists. Will Noon had two strong games in net against Brookline and Braintree. The team gears up for two conference games this coming week at Walpole on Tuesday night and hosting Milton on Thursday.
Cheerleading: It was an exciting week for NHS cheer because of our first home game!
The energy from the cheerleaders and the crowd was amazing. The team loved cheering on a team that fought hard start to finish. Cheer can’t wait to bring even more spirit and level up their performance for next week!
Football: Colin Mancino was our D MVP (havoc award) recipient of the week in our 27-0 loss to Natick. One of our senior leadership council members, Colin forced a fumble and led the team in tackles.
Boys’ Cross Country: The Boys Cross Country team had a bye week in league competition and no invitationals. In the upcoming week the team faces an undefeated Natick team, ranked #2 overall in the state, on Tuesday, September 16 at Elm Bank. On September 20th the Rocket boys will travel to Manchester, NH to compete in the prestigious Manchester Invitational, testing themselves on the hilly course against top Northeast regional competition.
Girls’ Cross Country: Girls Cross Country had a bye week but will head to Elm Bank on Tuesday, September 16th to take on Natick High School. They then will head to the Manchester Invitational in Manchester, NH on Saturday, September 20th!
Field Hockey: Varsity field hockey had a tough week in competition with a loss to Braintree and a loss against the defending State Champs, Walpole. The team continues to build and looks forward to the week ahead. Big shout out to our JV team who beat Walpole on Wednesday with a score of 2-1! Congrats Coach Cox!
Girls’ Swim and Dive: The team took on Milton Friday in their first meet of the season. They travel to Braintree on Friday, September 19th for some more league competition!
Dance: The dance team brought the energy with their first halftime performance at football’s home opener Friday night! You can catch the team this week while football takes on Lincoln-Sudbury Friday, September 19th at Memorial.
Boys’ Golf: The golf team went 4-0 on the week with home wins against Walpole and Wellesley and away wins at Framingham and Walpole. The win against Wellesley was the team’s first since 2015. In the win against Wellesley, Liam Steigner shot even par and Jacob Gorfinkle shot 1 over to help secure the victory.

Athletic Department: There have been a couple of changes in the Athletic Department since June!
Bella Tersoni is the new Assistant Athletic Director and Coordinator of Club Sports!
Bella joins Needham after three years as the Assistant Athletic Director of Natick High School. While former Assistant AD Richkaard Verrier is now the Director of Athletics of Westwood High School! A big congratulations to Richkaard on this next step in his career!
Sam Franke takes over as Head Athletic Trainer! Sam joins the team upon graduating from Chatham University, (Pittsburgh PA) this past May. Along with Sam, we are lucky to welcome back Alex Finn, Assistant Athletic Trainer for her second year! Stop by and say hi to Sam and Alex after school in the Athletic Training room or catch them out at games and practices every afternoon.

Please welcome our new Varsity Field Hockey Coach Tessa Taylor! Tessa has helped run Needham Youth Field Hockey for a number of years and still plays competitively today. Good luck to Coach Taylor and the team as they start the season!
Please welcome our new Sailing Head Coach Alex Boni! Alex is a Needham alumni who sailed for eight seasons here at NHS before heading off to UVM where we sailed at the collegiate level. We are so lucky to have Alex back to lead the sailing program this fall!
Girls’ Soccer: The NHS Girls varsity soccer team won their first match away versus Newton North 3–0. Senior Michelle Faynstein scored two goals and had an assist. Sophomore Syd Kalaw had the opening goal, Junior Izzy Marino and Senior captain Hannah Levine also had assists. Freshman goalkeeper Maggie Peterson helped form a defense that completed the shut out!
Boys’ Soccer: Boys Soccer had a dominant start to the season with wins over Newton North (4-1) and Bedford (2-0). In both games the team showed depth with all rostered players getting playing time and 8 different Rockets tallying a goal or assist! The offense was led by captains Avery Brodsky and Austin Williams who had 2 goals each, one in each game. Strong defense helped secure the wins with seniors Jack Clapham, Lucas Berner, and Jacob Towvim anchoring the defense. They have a tough 3 game stretch this upcoming week traveling to Brookline on Tuesday then hosting Braintree on Thursday and Lincoln-Sudbury on Sunday.
Girls’ Volleyball: Girls volleyball lost 3-0 to number 2 ranked Newton North on Tuesday but won 3-0 over number 1 ranked Brookline on Thursday. Senior captain Sadie Stants led the way all week and picked up 14 kills and 4 aces in Thursday’s match. Senior Julia Burns added 9 kills and Junior Sam Sullivan had her varsity debut with 7 kills!
Boys’ Golf: The golf team has begun the season 2-2 and split a pair of matches with Milton this week. On Thursday, Peter Giannacopoulos led off his round with an eagle on the par 5 first hole. He finished with a 3 over par to help the team to its 110-94 victory.
Girls’ Swim/ Dive: Maddy Weirup and Emm Fritz are the Girls Swim & Dive Rockets of the Week for Week 1 and Week 2. In our first full two weeks of practice, both Maddy and Emm have brought positivity and focus to every practice, pushed themselves through challenging sets, and have led by example in their work ethic. Their commitment to starting the season strong has not only elevated their own training but also been a major motivating factor for their teammates. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for both of them this season!
Field Hockey: NHS Field Hockey started the season with ties against Newton North and Brookline. Goals were scored by seniors Martha Han (Tuesday vs. Newton North) and Megan Sgroi (Thursday vs. Brookline). The team is looking strong at the beginning of the season and progressing with every match. Goalkeeper Jackie Lancaster and defender Talia Dwyer have remained a strong presence in the back field.
Cheerleading: Varsity cheer is rocking it with a good halftime showcase at Milton on Friday night and completing choreography. JV cheered their first game of the season at home on Saturday. Congrats to our spirit stick recipients Sadie S. and Kaitlin L!
Football: The Rockets put together a strong first half led by the efforts of Jayden Greenfield, who had a highlight reel 28 yard catch, and QB Tyler Langford, who ran for one score and threw a 1 yard TD to WR Caden McNamee. After pulling within 1 point at the half, the Rockets fell 46-12.
Dance: Catch the dance team perform for the first time this season at halftime on Friday, September 12th for our Football home opener v. Natick!
Girls’ Cross Country: The Needham Girls Cross Country team started their season with a very strong week of racing. On Wednesday, September 3rd the Girls traveled to Braintree for a tri meet against Braintree and Weymouth. The girls won against Braintree with a score of 22 to 38. The girls also won over Weymouth with a score of 23 to 35. Senior Greta Hammer won the race in a course record time of 17:34.9, the fastest time in the state over 5k this year. Placing 4th in the race was Junior Madison Roach, followed by Sophomore Eva Scharf in 6th. These three Rockets were supported by a very strong group of Juniors: newcomer to XC, Claire Cianciolo, and veterans Alessia Uyenoyama, Maiva King, Sidney Gilbreth, Ava Conti, Marisa Williams and Aviva Tarksy.
On September 6th, the girls team travelled to Attleboro for the MSTCA relay meet. The Needham girls had a total of 17 three person teams competing in this super fun meet. This was the most of any team attending the meet.
In the freshman/sophomore race, the team of Sophomores Serena Tanna and Eva Scharf, as well as freshman Emily Jones placed 2nd in the race. Coming in 14th was the all sophomore team of Sam Jarm, Ashley Cohen and Audrey Burke.
In the Girls Junior/Senior race, the Needham Girls showed their depth once again by placing 4 teams in the top 12! Placing 5th was the all Junior team of Alessia Uyenoyama, Claire Cianciolo and Madison Roach. Placing 9th was the team of Junior Sidney Gilbreth and seniors Katie Burns and Adah Rosen. They were closely followed by the all Junior team of Maiva King, Marisa Williams and Ava Conti. Coming in 12th place was a team with Seniors Janie Urban and Delia Rauch with anchor leg Junior Aviva Tarsky.
Next up, the Girls travel to Elm Bank in Natick for a dual meet on Tuesday, September 16th.
Boys’ Cross Country :The Boys Cross Country team opened its competitive season with two meets during the first week of September.
On Wednesday the team travelled to Braintree to race against Braintree and Weymouth.
The Rockets won over Braintree by a score of 18-43 led by a one-two sweep by seniors Captain
Sam Gustat and Sklyar Levin. Also scoring for the Rockets were Duncan Alexander (4th),
Captain Elliot Bass (5th) and Harrison O’Garr (6th).
Weymouth took a close win over the Rockets by one point, 28-29. Weymouth runners surged to an
early lead, but the Rockets did not quit. Sam Gustat’s gusty run behind Weymouth’s top two
runners kept us in contention. Skylar, Duncan, Elliott and Harrrison passed Weymouth athletes
on the third lap and prevailed in most of the kicking duels over the last 100 meter sprints to the
finish line. Captain Joe Bonavolanta and Zayan Hussain, Needham’s 6th and 7th runners, had
strong races, coming in ahead of Weymouth’s 5th runner.
It was a strong team effort and a promising start to the season. Sam Gustat, Duncan Alexander,
Elliot Bass, Harrison O’Garr and Zayan Hussain all opened their seasons with personal records for
the 5K distance.
On Saturday the Rockets competed in the MSTCA Relays. Highlights for the boys included two
top 15 finishes for the Freshman/Sophomore Relays Teams. The team of Caleb Gilbreth, Gabriele
Mineo and Eduardo Stiffler finished 5th and the team of Connor Bobbin, Ron Ozeri and Bryan
Nguyen finished 8th. Two of the boys Junior/Senior Relays Teams were in contention for top 15
medal places when the race was halted by officials for safety due to approaching storms. Seniors
Sam Gustat and Skylar Levin recorded the two fastest relay legs times for Needham for the day.

6/10 MIAA Final 4 v Natick 3-1 Win
6/13 MIAA State Championship v Brookline 3-1 Loss
Boys Volleyball played in the State Championship game (5th straight) on Friday June 13th in what was an electric atmosphere. Xaverian HS was packed with fans from Brookline and Needham in what was a very intense game. The Rockets won the first set putting the upmost pressure on the number 1 seed Brookline. They then played a very close back and forth 2nd set in which they would lose by just 2 points. The Rockets would go on to lose the next 2 sets following this and ultimately losing the championship game. The boys carried themselves with pride and class and gave it their all not only in this game but the entire season. We are very proud of you all!
Needham Athletic Dept. - We would like to thank everyone in the Needham community for their support throughout this 2024-25 school year and supporting our student athletes. We saw two teams go to a state championship game, Girls Cross Country winning the MIAA D1A Championship, two student athletes winning MA Gatorade Player of the Year and ton of feats from different teams and athletes! We graduated a great class of 2025 and can not wait to hear/see what they accomplish in the future not just in athletics but in life!

Boys Outdoor Track & Field team closed out its season yesterday at the MIAA Meet of Champions. Adam Ganetsky finished 15th in the javelin with a throw of 151' 7" while the 4x400 relay (Kyle Railton, Josh Batsevitsky, Michael Flueckiger, Nathan Cunoosamy) also finished 15th with a season best time of 3:26.15. Great way to finish the season for the Rockets!
Girls Outdoor Track & Field - After Thursday’s Day 1 of the Meet of Champions, we had more success on Day 2 with our 4x100m relay team of Sofi Galan, Madison Swan, Sara MacConnell and Eva Geddes taking home medals with a 7th place finish and season best time of 49.79! Greta doubled back to finish 5th in the 1 mile with a 4:58.32.
Softball The Rockets finished the regular season 12-5 earning the 13 seed in the D1 tournament.
In the round of 16 the Rockets traveled to Attleboro to face the 4th seeded bombers of Attleboro. It was a back and forth game all day with Needham eventually losing a fantastic game 6-4. Thank you to our three seniors Kelsey Pittman, Stephanie Sucher and Maricel Pucillo on a great year and career. Your contributions and leadership will not be forgotten. Go Rockets!
Boys Volleyball went 2-0 on the week to punch their ticket to a 5th straight Final 4 appearance. Early in the week they took on #14 Lowell beating them in 3 sets (3-0) which earned the team a spot in the Elite 8 round. The Rockets would then host #27 seed Taunton beating them in four sets (3-1) to earnt that final 4 spot. The Rockets will take on Natick for a third time this season, they split the regular season series 1-1!
Boys Lacrosse traveled to Andover for the round of 16 and would lose the game (20-9). The team finished the season 12-8!
Girls Lacrosse traveled to Wellesley for the round of 16 and would lose the game (19-6). The team finished the season 12-7!
Boys Tennis - Boy’s tennis wrapped up their season and playoff run in fine fashion this week. Strong performances lead to a commanding victory over 9th seed Shrewsbury. Jack Wexler staged a dramatic comeback to seal the team win at 2nd singles, while Andrew Bass and Jake MacNeil’s 3rd set win was icing on the cake. In the state quarterfinals the boys were outmatched by a talented (#1seed) St. John’s Prep squad, despite solid play up and down the roster.
Girls Tennis traveled to Winchester last week for a #8 vs #9 matchup. They would ultimately lose (4-1) putting an end to their 2025 season. They ended the season with a 14-5 record

Boys Outdoor Track & Field - This past week, the track & field team traveled to Tufts University to compete at the MIAA Division 1 State Championship. Leo Winston started things off for the Rockets on the track Thursday with a 2sec PR in the 2 mile with a time of 9:51.55. As the meet came to a close, the boys 4x800 relay (Duncan Alexander, Sam Cooperman, Raj Randery, Austin Conti) ran a season best time of 8:35.84, and the 4x400 (Kyle Railton, Josh Batsevitsky, Michael Flueckiger, Nathan Cunoosamy) had our top finish on the track placing 10th. In the field, Adam Ganetsky was the 9th, and last person into the finals for javelin on Saturday and he made the most of his opportunity to get 3 additional throws. On his last attempt in finals, he threw a PR of 165' 7", in the process leapfrogging the competition to finish in 4th place, earning himself a medal and positioning himself to hopefully compete next week at the MIAA Meet of Champions.
Girls Outdoor Track & Field finished 10th at the MIAA State Championship meet with 29 points led by individual wins from Sofi Galan in the 400m hurdles (66.11) and Greta Hammer in the 2 mile (10:36.47). Also had scoring placements from Eva Geddes in the 100m (13.31), our 4x800m relay team of Hammer, Maddie Roach, Eva Adam and Audrey Adam in 3rd place, and our 4x100m relay team of Ava Conti, Madison Swan, Sara MacConnell and Geddes in 8th place.
Softball took on Whittier Tech in the Round of 32 in Needham on Saturday night. The team found themselves down 3-0 after the 3rd inning but would come storming back scoring 6 unanswered runs to win the game 6-3! They move on to the round of 16 where they will play the #4 seed Attleboro.
Boys Volleyball took on the #30 seed Woburn in the MIAA round of 32. The Rockets were tied 1-1 after 2 sets and found their groove in the third set going on to win the next 2 beating Woburn 3-1! They take on the #14 seed Lowell in Needham Tuesday June 3rd. Matty Cloonan led the way with 15 kills in this playoff match.
Boys Lacrosse took on Arlington in Needham Saturday afternoon in the MIAA round of 32. The Rockets found themselves down 4 goals at one point in the game. The Rockets stuck to the game plan and ultimately would come back to win the game 9-5 holding Arlington to just one goal in the second half led by Senior Captain Tommy Peabody. The boys will travel to Andover for the round of 16.
Girls Lacrosse took on Acton Boxborough in what was a very exciting game. It was back and forth all game long and with about 2 minutes to go Senior Hannah Patey scored the game winning goal and put the Rockets up 2. A-B would then come back and score to cut the lead into 1 but the Rockets would hold them off for a 11-10 win! The Rockets will take on rival Wellesley in the round of 16.
Boys Tennis - After concluding the regular season at 14-4 the boys tennis team earned the #8 seed in the state tournament. On Tuesday the team took on Braintree in the first round of the playoffs and emerged victorious with 5-0 win, with a lineup composed almost entirely of seniors. Next up #9 Shrewsbury on Monday 6/2 at Newman Elementary school for a 4:15 start time.
Girls Tennis took on Central Catholic last week winning the game 5-0 to book their spot in the round of 16! They will take on Winchester for a #8 vs #9 matchup !
Girls Ultimate Frisbee took on Sharon and Arlington in their last matches of the season. They celebrated their one senior, Ava Towvim. She showed up BIG this week, scoring 4 goals against Sharon on Tuesday and getting a goal, an assist and a bunch of blocks against Arlington on Thursday. Congrats, Ava!

Boys Outdoor Track & Field - On Wednesday, the boys competed at the Bay State Conference Championship. The 4x400 of Kyle Railton, Josh Batsevitsky, Michael Flueckiger, and Nathan Cunoosamy finished in 2nd place, the Rockets highest finish of the night, with a season best time of 3:27.66. The 4x800 (Raj Randery, Will Courcier, Harrison O'Garr, Joe Bonavolonta) and 4x100 (Jack Ringer, Emanuel Reid, Alex Duan, Elias Langsner) both finished in 6th place. Individual point scorers were: Cunoosamy (3rd - 400m), Adam Ganetsky (3rd - javelin), Langsner (5th - 200m), Flueckiger (8th - 400m), Tyler Langford (6th - 400h), Rod Krikov (8th - 400h).
Girls Outdoor Track & Field had a good day at the Bay state conference championship meet. Sofi Galan remained undefeated this season in conference competition winning the 400m hurdles in a PR of 1:07.00. We also had runner up finishes from Eva Geddes in the 100m (12.73) and Greta Hammer in the 1 mile (5:02.68). Rounding out our top three placements were Audrey Adam in the 800, our 4 x 100m relay team (Madison Swan, Ava Conti, Sara MacConnell, and Geddes) and our 4x400m relay team (Galan, Maddie Roach, Audrey Adam and Eva Adam). The team finished in 6th place overall.
Baseball - Varsity baseball finishes a tough but hard fought season at 5-13. Will O’Donell led the team in almost every offensive category. Austin Robinette finishes on top of the strikeout and ERA categories. Will Saratella leads the team in wins on the mound for the Rockets.
Softball - The Needham Rockets softball team went 2-1 on the week to end the season 12-5. The Rockets had wins over Braintree and Lexington to finish out the rest of the season. In the win over Braintree the rockets were down by 2 going into the 7th inning and erupted to score 7 to win 12-7. In the final game of the regular season Kaityn Cheng was phenomenal in the circle pitching the complete game shutout to beat Lexington 3-0.
Boys Volleyball went 2-1 on the week with wins over Wayland and Westfield and a loss to Natick. Ben Vu had a 2.3 serve receive average and 11 digs per match. The team finishes the regular season 17-5 and awaits the bracket release for their first round matchup in the state tournament.
Boys Lacrosse finished their regular season with a win over Braintree to head into the postseason with a 11-7 record! Tommy Peabody continues to keep the Rockets competitive this season with his stellar play in net.
Girls Lacrosse finished their regular season with a loss to Walpole on Memorial Day. They close out the season with a 11-6 record and await the MIAA Bracket release to see where they will land for the first round of the state tournament!

Boys Outdoor Track & Field - Track and Field closed out the regular season this week after hosting the BSC Open Meet. At that meet, we had 15 of 35 competitors set a new PR to close out their season! On Sunday, the Rockets traveled to New Bedford for the MSTCA Division 1 State Relays Meet. The 4x800m relay (Duncan Alexander, Sam Cooperman, Raj Randery, Austin Conti) was the team's highest finish yesterday (11th place) running 8:38. The 4x200 relay (Jack Ringer, Michael Flueckiger, Alex Duan, Nathan Cunoosamy) ran 1:33 and the 4x400 relay (Kyle Railton, Flueckiger, Matteo Fucentese, Cunoosamy) ran 3:33. The boys' exceeded their seed time in both races and all athletes in attendance showed they are ready for the start of the postseason push.
Girls Outdoor Track & Field Girls track finished a respectable 11th at the D1 State Relays in New Bedford on Sunday. The team was led by the Distance Medley Relay squad of Audrey Adam (1200m), Sofi Galan (400m), Maddie Roach (800m) and Eva Adam (1600m) with a 3rd place finish in 12:42. Other place finishers included the 4x200m relay team (Madison Swan, Ava Conti, Sara MacConnell, Eva Geddes) in 4th; the Sprint Medley Relay team (Swan, Geddes, Galan, Roach) and two 4x1600m relay teams (Taylor Partridge, Siena Uyenoyama, Aviva Tarsky, Janie Urban) and (Sidney Gilbreth, Serena Tanna, Maggie Sharrard, Katie Burns) who finished 6th and 8th respectively. Next up for the Rockets is the Bay State Conference Championship this Wednesday May 21st.
Baseball went 2-2 on the week with 2 losses at home but earning 2 wins on the road. Needham varsity baseball gets a big 1-0 win on the road in Springfield. Junior Nick Buckley has his best performance of the season. Striking out 6, allowing only 5 hits and 0 runs, earning his first career varsity win. Freshman Colton Harjula slammed the door with a clean 7th inning, earning his first career save.
Softball - The NHS varsity softball team was 1-2 on the week. After back to back tough losses to Weymouth and Natick. Needham bounced back with a 3-0 win vs Framingham on senior night. Kaitlyn Cheng pitched the complete game shutout in the circle. Morgan Kraft and Kelsey Pittman had big two out hits to knock in all three runs. Congratulations to Stephanie Sucher, Kelsey Pittman and Maricel Pucillo, our three senior captains who were recognized on senior night. Needham stands at 10-4 headed into the last week of the regular season.
Boys Volleyball went 2-1 on the week with wins over Framingham and BC High and a loss to Brookline. Will Rozman is the Rocket of the week with 11 kills against number #1 ranked Brookline Tuesday and 21 kills against BC High Friday .
Boys Tennis - Boy’s tennis went 3-1 on an action packed week. Jake Goldfine filled in masterfully at singles, winning two matches at the #1 position. The doubles tandem of Julian Yuh and Gavin Batt dropped just 2 games over the course of 4 sets against Milton and Braintree, while Richard Shen and Alex Zhang defeated Braintree’s 1st doubles team in straight sets. The team sits at 12-4 with just 2 matches to go.
Girls Rugby traveled to Russell Field in Cambridge to take on Rindge and Latin School. They played a tough match and would ultimately drop their 2nd to last regular season contest to CRLS. Player of the week - Sophia Rooyakeers had a great game helping the team out in every facet!
Girls Ultimate Frisbee took on Newton North Friday in Needham. Rockets came out strong against Newton North, but started to lag a little as the heat and humidity caught up to us. Despite the loss, we did manage to get 6 points against North, tripling our previous result.
Boys Ultimtae Frisbee - Varsity finished 12th overall in a field of very talented teams coming from more than 4 states and 2 provinces. Ezra Cohen led the team in assists for the weekend, while Max Shoemaker led the team in scoring and Nathan Taub led the team in blocks. The Rockets went 1-2 on Saturday and Sunday and are looking forward to their state championships this weekend. The JV squad was led by Ryan Conti and Jack Bagley, who combined for 18 scores and 16 blocks. Freshman Teddy Herold racked up a team-leading 9 assists in his first high school tournament."

S.A.L.T - The Needham High School Student Athlete Leadership team hosted its first ever Middle School Olympics on the half day last week. This provided middle school students a chance to interact and meet some of our captains and student atheltes here at the high school. The students got to play games, learn about different programs at the high school and hear what our S.A.L.T team does!
Boys Outdoor Track & Field - The boys track & field team ended their league meet season with tough matchups, losing to Natick (91-44), Wellesley (103-33) and Weymouth (98-37). Elias Langsner scored against all three teams in the 100 and 200 grabbing 1st place against Weymouth (100) and Wellesley (200m). Josh Batsevitsky, Matteo Fucentese and Michael Flueckiger swept the 400m against Natick and Batsevitsky/Fucentese went on to put points on the board vs. Wellesley and Weymouth. Tyler Langford (1st vs. Natick) and Rod Krikov scored against all 3 teams in the 400h and Colin Mancino had a 3' PR in shot put to score against all 3 teams including a 1st place finish vs. Natick. Adam Ganeetsky continues his strong season throwing 162' 0" (a 10' PR) in the javelin to be ranked as MA #21 - winning the event in the process! On Saturday, the Rockets traveled to a very rainy Andover Invite where Duncan Alexander ran a PR performance in the 1 mile while Austin Conti and Sam Gustat ran season best performances in the 1 mile and 2 mile, respectively. However, the boys saved the highest finish for their last race of the day where the 4x800 relay of Matteo Fucentese, Will Courcier, Skylar Levin, and Joe Bonavolonta finished in 6th place.
Girls Outdoor Track & Field - The highlight of the Andover invite was winning the 4x800 relay featuring Eva Adam, Greta Hammer, Maddie Roach and Audrey Adam in a MA #1 time of 9:32.77. Additionally, we had solid performances from Taylor Partridge and Siena Uyenoyama 3rd and 8th in the 2 mile; Sofi Galan 3rd in the 400 hurdles and Amina Kamara 7th in the discus. This past Wednesday in the final three dual meets with Natick, Wellesley and Weymouth, we had wins from Audrey Adam (800), Sofi Galan (400 hurdles) and Greta Hammer (2 mile) with a top 30 time in the country this spring of 10:28.51!
We also want to say thank you to the girls and boys track teams for their work in the community collecting over 80 pairs of sneakers for the Generic Ministry group!
Boys Lacrosse gets an important win against Natick HS winning by a score of (13-7). Sophomore Matt Ledbury continues to make big plays in big games helping the Rockets to a 8-7 record and ranked #12 in Division 1 power rankings.
Softball - Needham varsity softball had one game this past week. Needham defeated Milton 5-4 in a back and forth game ending with a fantastic game saving catch by senior captain Maricel Pucillo in cetter field with the tying run on third and the winning run on second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Audrey Muzikant pitched the complete game. Morgan Kraft and Maddie Navales with big RBI's in the win.
Boys Volleyball Rocket the of the week is Will McDonald with 42 kills in 3 matches in wins over 7 Braintree and 2 Newton North and a 5 set loss to the #1 team in Division 2, Agawam. The team is now 13-3 and ranked 4th in the MIAA D1 Power Rankings.
Girls Ultimate Frisbee - After a disappointing loss to Brookline, Rockets blasted off to Four Rivers where they went undefeated in their four games on Saturday. Kenley Meyers and Zoe Berg each got 10 blocks, Kenley also had a team leading 14 assists. Her co-captains were not to be outdone — senior Ava Towvim had 11 goals for the day and Jo Calzada had the most overall positive stats with 8 goals, 12 assists and 9 blocks! Shout out to rookie Sophia Handler for a stellar day and contributing 6 blocks!

Boys Outdoor Track & Field - Tough road trip for boys' track and field with losses to Newton North and Framingham on Wednesday. Shoutout to Nathan Cunoosamy (400m) and Adam Ganetsky (javelin) who outright won their event. Additionally, Emanuel Reid was the top finisher in the JV 100 and JV 200, running a PR in both events! On Saturday, the Rockets opened up their invitational season at the Jim Hoar Freshman/Sophomore Invitational. The few athletes who qualified for the meet let their presence be known! Six of the 10 individual competitors set a new PR and the 4x100 relay recorded a season best performance! Elias Langsner and Nathan Cunoosamy earned individual medals for their performances in the 100m (4th place - Langsner), 200m (8th place - Cunoosamy), and 400m (4th place - Cunoosamy). Will Vettraino and Jack Ringer joined Cunoosamy and Langsner as medal recipients as the quartet made up the 3rd place 4x100m.
Girls Outdoor Track & Field went 1-1 in their dual meets last week with a win over Framingham and a loss to Newton North. On Friday night, Greta Hammer had a great race finishing 6th in the BSR Elite Mile with a new PR of 4:55. Saturday at the MSTCA Freshman/ Sophomore meet, we had top finishes from Eva Geddes 4th in the 100m, Eva Scharf 4th and Alessia Uyenoyama 8th in the 2 mile, Ellie Bookston 8th in the 1 mile and Phoebe McCourt, Ava Conti, Sara MacConnell and Geddes closed out the day with a 6th place finish in the 4x100 relay. Saturday night at Weston Twilight, we had some solid performances including a 7th place finish from Taylor Partridge in the 2 mile.
Baseball went 0-2 on the week with losses against Newton North and Wellesley. Freshman Colton Harjula raised his batting average to a team leading .364. Drew Koplan gets his first varsity hit on Friday vs Wellesley.
Softball - Needham varsity softball had a great week going 4-0 to build a 7 game win streak. The week started out with a 3-0 win over Newton North at home. Audrey Muzikant pitched a complete game giving up 2 hits with 9 strikeouts. Junior Kaitlyn Cheng led off the bottom of the first inning with a lead off homerun to spark the offense. Wednesday the Rockets defeated Wellesley 6-5 in a game that went back and forth with Needham plating the winning run in the top of the sixth inning. Kaitlyn Cheng pitched the complete game for the victory in the circle. The offense was led by captains Kelsey Pittman, Stephanie Sucher and Maricel Pucillo. Maricel also added an amazing play in center field to seal the victory. Thursday the Rockets defeated Brookline 15-1. Katie Murray pitched the complete game for her first varsity victory in the circle. It was an all around offensive team effort for the win. Finally on Friday the Rockets defeated Natick 12-1 with Audrey Muzikant in the circle for the win. Morgan Kraft continued her strong season at the plate with multiple hits and RBIs. Liv Kirshner, Kaitlyn Cheng and Maddie Navales all had big days at the plate.
Boys Volleyball Junior outside hitter Matty Cloonan collected 27 kills in 2 matches as the Rockets went 2-0 on the week and qualified for the postseason for the fourteenth consecutive season since 2010.
Boys Tennis - Boy’s tennis went 2-0 for the week with wins over Wellesley and Natick. Senior Jack Wexler sealed the Wellesley match with a tenacious three-set victory over their #2 player. The win over Wellesley gave the Rockets their first season sweep over Wellesley for this group of seniors. The boys improved their record to 8-3 with just 7 contests to go.
Girls Rugby had their first home contest of the season taking on Weymouth on a beautiful afternoon. The girls battled hard but ultimately would lose the match. Jesse Brandish and Harper Schneiderman who were huge on defense in our game against Weymouth. Both had outstanding games numerous tackles causing turnovers
Girls Ultimate Frisbee - Girls Ultimate won their two games last week with every teammate contributing. Shout out to Sophia Handler for getting her first (and second) goals in the game against CRLS on Thursday!
Boys Ultimate Frisbee - The rockets played well this weekend after a less than ideal Saturday showing against Lexington HS and Montclair HS from New Jersey, with wins against Northampton HS, Newton North HS, and St John's Prep. Ben Soulia, senior, scored 3 points in games against Northampton and St John's Prep. Max Shoemaker, sophomore had 2 assists against SJP, to go along with a score in the games against Northampton and SJP. Simon Shoemaker, senior, had 2 passes deflected in the final game against SJP and 1 against Northampton High. Overall the team went 0-2 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday, a terrific bounce back performance before heading home.

Baseball hosted St John's Prep for their first game of the season on their home diamond at memorial park field. The team was looking to avenge their defeat to SJP in the first round of the tournament last season. Rockets Baseball completes 5 run comeback against St. John’s Prep: Needham tallied 13 hits in the game. Senior Matt Ferreira led the way with two runs batted in, going 2-for-4 on the day at the plate. Freshman Colton Harjula went 3-for-4 to lead Needham in hits. Will Saratella and Will O'Donnell each collected multiple hits for the Rockets in an impressive come from behind victory. Will Saratella also had an electric 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Allowing no hits and no runs, earning the victory.
Boys Volleyball participated in the ALS One Tournament hosted by Winchester High School. Needham went 2-0 this April vacation beating top 25 teams Saint John’s Shrewsbury and Winchester. Nathaniel Ross was named tournament mvp distributing 52 assists in the 2 wins
Boys Lacrosse had 3 games this week as part of the Players Cup Tournament that they participate in each year. They went 0-3 on the week with losses to Walpole, North Andover and Xaverian. After a tough week of competition for Boys lacrosse we still had solid performances from Eliot Wajda and Finn Noon. Two freshman that play huge roles for the varsity team this season!

Baseball went 1-2 on the week with a win against Walpole and losses to Milton and Braintree. Will Cassidy threw a complete game (4 hit) shutout vs Walpole to earn Boston Globe Player of the Week honors in his first varsity start!
Boys Tennis - Boy’s tennis went 1-2 for the week with a win over Miton (5-0) and losses to Newton North (1-4) and Division 2 powerhouse Hopkinton (1-4). Senior Captains Oliver Pollack and Jake Goldfine grabbed the lone point with an impressive win vs Newton North at first doubles. Also, Jake MacNeil scored a solid win vs Milton in his singles debut vs Milton. The boys head into the second half of the season at 6-3.
Girls Rugby - Although they had a bye week last week we want to recognize members of the girls rugby team. Mae Alwart went to Guatemala for ‘school the world’ to help build a school for an impoverished community! Sophia Katz and Sophia Rooyakkers ran the Newport Marathon!
Girls Ultimate Frisbee - Girls Ultimate had back-to-back away games on Wednesday and Thursday before break. On Wednesday, they beat Lexington's (10-0) in some gale-force winds. On Thursday the team battled hard against the reigning state champs, Newton North, holding them to an 8-2 victory where every point was contested, and we had many great possessions in tough conditions.

Boys Outdoor Track & Field - Boys Track & Field opened up competition this week, unfortunately losing to both Braintree (72.67 - 59.33) and Milton (83 - 53). Girls Outdoor Track & Field - Not a great start to the season for the girls track team as they lost (82.5-53.5) to Braintree and (72-64) to Milton. That being said, there were a few individual highlights including wins from Eva Geddes in the 100 (12.88), Eva Adam 1 mile (5:28), Taylor Partridge 2 mile (11:45), Sofi Galan 400 hurdles (1:09) and the 4x100 relay team of Simi Basak, Ava Conti, Sara McConnell and Madison Swan (52.15). They are looking to turn things around this week against Brookline and Walpole.
Boys Volleyball - Nathaniel Ross had 41 assists in 2 matches as Needham Boys Volleyball went 0-2 to Newton North and Brookline, losing consecutive matches for the first time since 2011.
Girls Lacrosse - Huge three wins for the lax program this week. Special highlights to Olivia Leschinski, junior goalie, with an incredible 9 saves in our game on Thursday. Callan Siletto (9th grade) with her first varsity goal against Braintree. Last highlight is Sam Horvat (9th grade) for her first assist against Wayland in an incredible game on Sunday. Needham Girls lacrosse is off to a 4-1 start! Let’s keep it going this week for another big league week!
Boys Lacrosse went 2-1 on the week with wins over Braintree and Brookline during the week and had a tough matchup this past weekend vs Lincoln Sudbury. Charlie Cianciolo continues to impress with his team play. Charlie has been a consistent stand out for the varsity team by playing multiple positions and leading the team in points. The team is now 4-2 on the season and is back at it this week with league play!
Softball - The girls had their first victory of the season on Wednesday (10-4) against Braintree. Kaitlyn Cheng pitched a complete game for her first victory of the season. The offense was led by Stephanie Sucher and Kelsey Pittman. On Friday the Rockets had a tough day against Bedford losing (9-0). The Rockets look to get back on track this week with 3 games starting Monday against Walpole.
Girls Tennis Went 1-0 on the week with a (5-0) win at Walpole. At Newton south on Friday the team was tied 2-2 with a match on the line. The 3rd singles were in a close battle but the match was called due to darkness. Match will resume at another time TBD.
Boys Tennis - Boys tennis went 3-0 for the week defeating Braintree, Walpole and Newton South. An impressive sweep at singles clinched the victory against Newton South. In that match Freshman Elliot Gettman made quick work of his talented opponent (6-1 , 6-2). Senior Jack Wexler fought off a 3rd set comeback, and Junior Ben Svetlov battled darkness, leg cramps, and the cold temperature in an epic battle to win the Rockets 3rd and deciding point.
Girls Rugby traveled to Belmont last week for game 2 on the season.Liana Osgood and Julia Cohen! Both contributed to a solid team performance - helping their teammates get 4 tries! The most amount of tries in a single game than we have ever had! Both also had solid games on defense with their tackles all game!
Girls Ultimate Frisbee - Girls Ultimate lost a close game to Brookline on Thursday, playing with a very short bench compared to an army of Warriors. Shout outs to Jo Calzada and Zoe Berg who each had a goal and an assist and many great blocks in the (7-9) loss.
Boys Ultimate Frisbee - Boys Ultimate Frisbee had its first two games of the season and split the week 1-1. The Rockets battled through 20 mph gusts of wind on Tuesday and fell to Newton North (6-9) but bounced back on Friday with a dramatic last second win against Xaverian (11-10). Rookie Max Shoemaker finished the week with 9 points and an ever-coveted Callahan. Ezra Cohen led the team with 8 assists and Ben Soulia had 5 blocks on defense, including several layouts. Connor Manning sacrificed his face for the team by taking a disc point-blank to the jaw on defense which resulted in a turnover and the game clinching point.
Girls Golf won their lone match of the week last week taking on Braintree at Braintree Municipal Golf Course and would get a close win (4-3). They look to keep the momentum going this week with two matches v Brookline. The team is currently 3-0 on the season.
Girls Flag Football had their season opener last week at Westford academy hosting the teams in the Merrimack Division. The girls would lose to host Westford academy (34-14) in game one and a very very close game to Lowell (13-12) in their second game.

Boys Volleyball - Andrew Kurdziel, a 6 foot 4 senior middle blocker, amassed 14 kills while hitting .855 as the Rockets beat #2 ranked Natick on Tuesday (3-1). Kurdziel added 6 blocks to go with his 14 kills in the victory. The team stays perfect on the season 4-0 heading into a huge week with a State Championship rematch vs Newton North on Tuesday April 8th.
Girls Lacrosse - Girls lacrosse had a great showing in the first game of the season with a (16-9) victory over Weymouth. Huge shoutout to Sami Bonasia (6 goals) Addie Stedman (4 goals) Lila Jantzen (3 goals) Lisa O’ Leary, Sophia Meade, Frankie Adams all with one goal in the game— what a team contribution! Emmie Verville had 5 assists. The team would continue road play against KP on Friday. Although the result was not what they wanted, Paige Moyer finished with her first goal as a freshman, assisted by sophomore Halle Kamke! They’re back on the road Tuesday at Brookline, and will have their home opener on Thursday at 4 vs. Braintree!
Boys Lacrosse played an impressive game against a top 10 team in the state (Hingham). The Rockets were down by 5 goals at half time but made a late surge in the 2nd half to come within a goal but ultimately fell short (7-6). Sophomore Matt Ledbury had 2 goals and Senior Goalie Tommy Peabody had 19 saves!
Softball took on Weymouth in the first game of the season. The rockets battled all game and would fall short in a close one (2-1). The Rockets look to continue play this upcoming week.
Baseball got off to a tough 0-2 start. On the bright side we had 10 players make their varsity baseball debut. Logan Layish, Colin O’Donnell, Colton Harjula, Joe Saratella, Nick Buckley, Will Cassidy, Matthew Rutter, Eli Dussault, John Marino, Lincoln Pollack.
Girls Tennis - had their home opener Friday against the defending champs Wellesley Raiders. What a great match it was. The Rockets got off to a good start winning one of their single matches and winning one of their double matches but dropping another one of their singles to hold on to a 2-1 lead. They would end up losing a 2nd singles match and it all came down to the last doubles match. It came down to the wire and ultimately would fall short (3-2)!
Boys Tennis - Boys tennis got off to a solid start going 2-1 for the week, with a loss to Bay State powerhouse Brookline, and wins over Weymouth and rival Wellesley. The win against Wellesley was the first for this group of Seniors, and what made it even better is that it was at Wellesley’s home courts. Seniors Olliver Pollack and Jake Goldfine were impressive in their victory versus Wellesley as they came back from down a set to clinch the team win in decisive fashion. Other players of note: Senior Eric Kaplan teamed up with first year player Gavin Batt to beat their Weymouth opponents 6-0, 6-0, while Ben Svetlov started the season undefeated with impressive straight set wins against Brookline and Wellesley.
Girls Rugby traveled to Sudbury on Friday afternoon to take on the Lincoln Sudbury Warriors in the first regular season game. It was a first tough match but the Rockets gave a solid effort. Rocket of the week was Junior Grace Tetrault who scored 2 tries and 2 extra points at our game friday!
Girls Ultimate Frisbee - Girls Ultimate had its first two games of the season and welcomed 3 rookies to the team: Sophomores Nina Barzilay, Sophia Handler and Maddie Weirup. In their first game, each got their first receptions and followed them up with pass completions and no turnovers! Highlights included a great give and go sequence from Sophomores Zoe Berg and Madeleine Clark. While falling (4-9) to CRLS, Rockets bounced back with a (10-3) win over Lincoln Sudbury which ended with a highlight-reel worthy layout grab from Madeleine Clark!
Girls Golf got their season started last Tuesday at the Needham Country Club. It was a beautiful afternoon for golf and the Rockets would win their match against Newton North (5-1).

The Spring regular season is underway! Boys Volleyball, Boys Lacrosse and Baseball have already had games! Other teams will start their 2025 seasons this upcoming week!
Spring Club Sports just started practices last week with Boys and Girls Ultimate and Girls Flag football. Club Sailing will start practices the week of April 7th. Middle School Sports will begin Tuesday April 8th.
New Varsity Coaches - Lindsay Hope is leading the way as the new Girls Varsity lacrosse coach for Needham High School. She played college lacrosse at Ramapo College of New Jersey and Stockton University. She also currently coaches for Laxachusetts, a club lacrosse program. and help with the Needham Girls Youth lacrosse program. She is also the Milton High School Varsity swimming assistant coach and teaches 6th grade science. Jamie Nix will be taking over the softball program. Jamie is a wellness teacher at Needham High School and also oversees the after school weight room program. Jamie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program having coached Needham freshman and JV baseball from 1994-2002 and with the Medway High School Baseball program from 2016-2021.
Boys Volleyball hosted St John's Prep and New Bedford back to back to start the season off after coming off a tough loss in the State Championship game last year. The team is off to a hot start winning both games (3 sets to 0) to put the team at 2-0 so far on the season!
Boys Lacrosse went on the road to begin their 2025 campaign after losing a tough game in the State championship last season to St John's Prep. They took the short trip to West Roxbury to play at Catholic Memorial where they would win the game (12-8). Sophomore Matt Ledbury led the way for the Rockets with 4 goals and 2 assists.
Baseball opened up their season on the road at non league opponent Dover Sherborn. The team scored runs in the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th inning but ultimately was not enough as they would drop their first game (5-4). The team had a total of 7 hits out of 28 at bats. Senior Charlie Ledbury had 2 RBI’s while Senior Nolan Gannon had 2 runs!

Cheerleading competed at the 2025 MSAA State Championships that took place at Worcester State University Sunday March 9th. The Rockets finished in 6th place out of 9 teams in their respective division scoring a total of 74.1 points. What a great job this season from the cheer team sticking through with their routines and putting on their best performances!
Girls Basketball traveled to Braintree early in the week to take on the #4 seeded Wamps in a MIAA Round of 16 Bay State Conference clash! The team would lose in a close one 52-47! The Rockets battleted hard all game and even when it seem like the game would get away from them they fought back. Excellent season from the girls!

Girls Indoor Track & Field had the 4x800 compete at the New England Championships this past Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The team consisted of Audrey Adam, Greta Hammer, Eva Adam and Maddie Roach. They had a season best time of 9:23.11 which earned them 2nd place in this event! Great season from the girls and the entire Girls Track and Field Team!
Girls Basketball hosted Andover in the A gym last week in a MIAA Round of 32 game. The atmosphere was awesome! It was certainly a nail biter and a very close game for the majority of the game which would end up needing overtime to decide a winner. Dani Deroian hit a free throw with 3 seconds left to tie the game up to send it into OT. She also hit two clutch free throws in OT to seal the victory! The Rockets then went on a run and held off Andover for a (52-48) win! Eva Andrews led the way for the Rockets with 13 points , 16 rebounds and 2 blocks! The Rockets will travel to Braintree to take on the #4 seed!
Boys Basketball - On Tuesday night the Rockets won a MIAA playoff game at King Philip. The score was (56 to 37). Senior Jeremy Gould scored 10 points including a big 4th quarter three pointer and junior Matthew Cloonan added 12 points. Senior Sean Walker ignited the Rockets with eight second quarter points. On Thursday the Rockets lost a MIAA round of 32 playoff game at Central Catholic. The score was (58 to 34). Junior Foster Wilinski scored 10 points for the Rockets. The team played with heart and determination all night. Great season from the team!
Girls Ice Hockey traveled to Attleboro last week to take on Bishop Feehan. They would have a 1-0 lead after the first period. Bishop Feehan then came out on a run in the 2nd period and would ultimately take the lead. The Rockets battled hard all game long but it was not enough. Cassie Ling scored 2 goals for the team. The Rockets would fall to Bishop Feehan (8-3). Great season from our Girls Hockey team! Needham's final record was 10-10-1 for the season.
Boys Ice Hockey traveled to Randolph to take on Archbishop Williams in a Round of 32 clash. The team would battle hard all game long but came up short against Archies (6-1). It was a great season from our Boys Hockey team! The team finished their season with a 12-9 record.
Dance competed at the MSAA Dance State competition this past Saturday. They competed in two different divisions (Pom and Jazz). The team did a great job hitting their routines and this earned them second place in the Pom division and Third place in the Jazz Division!
Cheer competed at the MSAA South Regional competition this past Sunday. The team did an awesome job with their routine and had the crowd rocking and engaged! Their routine earned them 74 points and a 4th place finish at the event! The Rockets scored well enough to receive an at large bid to the MA State championships this coming Sunday at Worcester State!

Girls Indoor Track & Field - Another great day for the Rockets at the Meet of Champions highlighted by a win in the 2 mile by Greta Hammer. Her time of 10:21.48 was a MA #1, US #8 and broke our school record set by former Needham standout Margie Cullen. Additionally, we had a runner up finish from our 4x800m relay team of Audrey Adam, Greta, Eva Adam and Maddie Roach in a season best time of 9:25.04 as well as a 5th place finish from Maddie in the 600m.
Boys Indoor Track & Field - Last week the boys finished their season at the MIAA Division 1 State Championship. The 4x200 relay (Kyle Railton, Nathan Cunoosamy, Michael Flueckiger, and Josh Batsevitsky) and 4x800 (Matteo Fucentese, Raj Randery, Sam Gustat, and Kaden Hu) finished strong with season best performances.Additionally, we’d like to recognize outstanding SCHOLAR-ATHLETES - 2025 National Merit Finalists: XC and Indoor Track Captain - Samuel Cooperman and XC Captain - Ryan McCarthy.
Girls Basketball went 0-2 on the week with losses to Norwell and Hanover at the Norwell Invitational Tournament to close out the regular season. The team finished the regular season 11-9 and earned the 13th seed in the D1 MIAA Basketball tournament and will take host Andover for the round of 32!
Boys Basketball went 1-1 on the week with a win over BC High and a loss to Central Catholic. Junior Ben Marino scored 21 points in the Rockets win vs. BC High. Senior Max Goodrow added 11 points and junior Foster Wilinski scored 11 points. With the win the TEAM qualified for the MIAA Basketball Tournament for the 11th straight year. This team started the 1st half of the season 3-7 and ended the 2nd half of the season 7-3 to qualify for the tournament. So proud of this team's collective effort and next play/next game mindset. On Thursday junior Ben Marino scored 19 points in a loss to Central Catholic. The team finished the regular season 10-10 and earned the 36th seed in the D1 MIAA Basketball tournament and will travel to King Philip High School for the preliminary round!
Girls Ice Hockey participated in the Hingham Showcase last week going 0-3 vs Andover , Archbishop Williams and Duxbury. The team finished the regular season 10-9-1 and earned the 26th seed in the D1 MIAA Hockey tournament and will travel to Attleboro to take on Bishop Feehan for the round of 32!
Boys Ice Hockey - Boys hockey went 2-0 on the week with wins over Barnstable and Hopkinton. Senior Joe Kajunski led the way last week with 4 goals including a hatrick vs Hopkinton. The team finished the regular season 12-8 and earned the 21st seed in the D1 MIAA Hockey tournament and will travel to Randolph to take on Archbishop Williams High School for the round of 32!
Boys Swim and Dive - Boys' Swimming & Diving finished 22nd of 44 schools at the D1 State Meet on Sunday Feb 23rd at Phillips Academy in Andover. The Rockets only had two athletes competing. Senior Vann Hotchkiss won his 3rd straight state title, scoring 562.45 points. Sophomore Andrew Call finished in 11th with 372.25 points. Amazing season for the Boys Swim and Dive team!
Wrestling - The Needham Varsity Wrestling team had 4 wrestlers competing this year in the Division 1 State Wrestling Tournament. All 4 wrestlers that competed in the State Tournament showed great sportsmanship and finished their season with a great outlook for what’s to come next year. Sophomore, Baysangur Imakaev and Juniors Max Sherer and Daniel Burdin all wrestled hard but were unable to make it into the second day of the tournament. At 126 lbs. Junior, Nathan Taub managed to make it into day two and finish 8th place in the State. Big Congratulations to these wrestlers for accomplishing so much this season and being able to list their names among the best in the State.
Gymnastics - Needham Gymnasts Lucy Aswad, Ella Gravin and Julia Zosa participated in the State individual Meet on Monday at Tewksbury High School. Julia placed 10th on beam with a score of 9.1. Lucy had a fall, which knocked her out of running for the beam and a 9.1 in floor placed her 12th , just out of the medals. Amazing job from these Athletes!
Cheer - An amazing week for the Rockets Cheerleading program! JV scored an all time high and Varsity scored a season high (77.3) earning them first place at the Bellingham Invitational. and is moving on to Regionals! Girls Indoor Track & Field had themselves a day last night at divisionals! We finished 4th overall with 32 points with top finishes from Ava Chiappinelli (6th) and Eva Geddes (8th) in the 55m dash, Maddie Roach (2nd) in the 600m, Audrey Adam (6th) in 1000m, Greta Hammer (2nd) in the 1 mile, Taylor Partridge (5th) in the 2 mile and Hammer, Audrey Adam, Eva Adam and Roach (4th) in the 4 x 800m relay. Maddie’s time of 1:35.52 in the 600m broke a 23 year old school record!
Girls Basketball went 2-0 on the week with wins over Walpole and Canton. Hannah Levine had a career high in points vs Walpole with 27 points! She also added 3 rebounds and 2 steals. On Senior night vs Canton Senior Captain Callie McCarthy led the way with 13 points , 8 rebounds and 5 steals! The team is 11-7 and is ranked 8th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.

Girls Ice Hockey Needham improved to 10-6-1 with an 8-2 win over Walpole and a 6-3 win over Medfield; Seven players scored in the Walpole contest with Jill Peabody leading the way tallying two goals and an assist; Ceci D'Amelio, Sarah Porras, Katelyn Birnbaum, Bella D'Amelio, Adrienne Giancola, and Cassie Ling all added goals; Five players scored in the Medfield win; Bella D'Amelio led with two goals; Jill Peabody, Ceci D'Amelio, Cassie Ling, and Liv Leschinski all added goals. The team is ranked 26th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.

Matt Rutter, Will and Joey Saratella , Matt Peabody and Matt Ledbury all scored goals for the Rockets in their 5-1 win on senior day vs Waltham! Wrestling - The Needham Varsity Wrestling team was able to send 8 wrestlers to Malden to compete for a spot at the State Tournament. Out of the 8 wrestlers that competed in Saturdays MIAA D1 C/M Sectional Tournament, 4 wrestlers will be attending the State Tournament in North Andover, Friday & Saturday. At 126 lbs. Nathan Taub managed to go undefeated on the day, winning all four matches with two pins and two decisions. At 175 lbs Junior Captain, Daniel Burdin placed 2nd Place. At 120 lbs Baysangur Imakaev placed 3rd Place. At 138 lbs Max Sherer placed 4th Place. With great performances also by 106 lbs. Siddhant Phatak, 150 lbs. Elias Langsner, 165 lbs. Robert Mahar, & 215 lbs Dean Mostafa. Congrats to all the Needham wrestlers this season for helping 4 teammates make it to the State tournament.
Girls Alpine Ski won the Ski East League Championship, a first for Needham High! What made the girls team special this year was the strength and depth of the entire varsity team, who stepped up after an injury to number one seeded racer sophomore Jessie Brandish. State Championship qualifiers junior Cassie Vincenzo stepped up and took the lead along with freshman Elodie Rosen, her sister junior Adah Rosen, and junior Story Bracker. Other varsity racers who played key roles in their championship season included senior captain Zoe Ettinger, juniors Anna Del Vechio, Haley Larsen, sophomore Zoe Gacs, and freshman Juliette Poulin.
Boys Alpine Ski team finished second in Ski East led by captain Will Kence, who finished a highly successful four-year career on the team with a second place finish overall in the individual boys standings after the team's season-long battle with perennial Ski East powerhouse BC High. "Will is a special racer who has a passion for skiing and racing and leaves a hall of fame legacy with the Needham Ski Team, " said Head Coach Tom Guarente. "He was consistently on the podium throughout his career and had three first-place finishes this season. He was also a four year qualifier for States”. Other varsity Boys Ski Team standouts included state qualifiers senior captain Evan Bagg, juniors Zach Raley and Adam Ganetsky, and freshmen Jake Musiak and Christian Rocamboli. Other varsity racers included senior captain Jake MacNeil, sophomore Brandon Ah Kee, freshmen Daniel Bloom and Ryan Curtis.
Gymnastics - Needham Gymnastics had a quiet week, waiting to hear of postseason opportunities. Lucy Aswad, Ella Gravin and Julia Zosa were invited to participate in the State individual Meet on Monday at Tewksbury High School based on their event averages from the season. Congratulations to them all for their high achievements and Best of Luck to them at this exciting meet.
Squash - The Club Squash team had their last match of the season last week vs Acton - Boxborough. The team would lose the match 14-2 but had some great performances. The team learned many new skills and strategies throughout the course of the season and showed great development!

Boys Indoor Track & Field Solid day for the Rockets at the Bay State Conference Championship on Wednesday. The team finished in 6th place led by Austin Conti who is the conference champion in the 2 mile running a PR of 9:58.50! Charlie Simeone finished 2nd place in the shot put and Cash Lindsley raced to a 5th place finish in the 2 mile with a 3-second PR. Nathan Cunoosamy finished 8th place in the high jump and all 3 relays scored to help put points on the board. 8 other Rockets had PR performances, showing that they are peaking at the right time as we approach the Division 1 State Championship Meet this upcoming Wednesday!

Boys Swim and Dive came in 23rd out of 46 teams at the South Sectional Meet. Senior Vann Hotchkiss won his 3rd straight title in the 1 meter diving and sophomore Andrew Call came in 5th. Sophomore Eithan Kogan finished 21st in the 200 freestyle and 18th in the 500 freestyle. Junior Daniil Landau finished 30th in the 50 freestyle and 20th in the 100 freestyle. The 200 freestyle relay of Daniil Landau, Ian Zeylikman, Gabe Pressman, and Jack Reilly came in 27th and the 400 freestyle relay of Daniil Landau, Eithan Kogan, Shawn Yu, and Jack Reilly finished 19th.
Wrestling - Last Wednesday, Needham Varsity Wrestling finished off their last team dual of the season against Wellesley High School. The duel was exciting from start to finish and one of the best performances of the year. Team wins came from 6 of the 12 Varsity Wrestlers. Siddhant Phatak, Baysangur Imakaev, Andres Lemus-Mesa, Senior Captain Alex Rutley, Robert Mahar, Junior Captain Daniel Burdin all were able to capture team points on the night. Needham gave up 12 points due to Forfeits at 113lbs and HWT and the team dual went to Wellesley H.S. (35-41). Needham Varsity Wrestling also attended a quad in Middleborough last weekend and had team dual matches with Durfee H.S. (36-37), Middleboro H.S.(30-48), Newton South H.S.(18-56) and Catholic Memorial H.S. (39-18). Junior Captain Daniel Burdin and Dean Mostafa, and Max Sherer were all able to go undefeated and Robert Mahar was able to pick up 3 wins on the day. The Needham Varsity Wrestling team now prepares to head to Malden Saturday, February 15th for sectionals to earn their spot at States this year.
Gymnastics - Gymnastics had a successful week, with a win over Braintree, at Braintree: 136.8 over their 132. On Saturday the team went to the Bay States Meet, placing third overall with a final score of 139.7 and multiple in meet All stars, including Izzy Lemaire, Leah Koroukh, Francesca DePaul, Julia Zosa, Ella Gravin and Lucy Aswad - all placing in their chosen events. Also announced at the meet were Ella Gravin as a Bay States All Star on Vault and Julia Zosa and Lucy Aswad taking both the Bay States All Star positions on Floor. Congratulations to the entire team for a successful season!
Dance - The dance team took part in the Bay State Conference championships on Saturday at Newton North High School. The team did a phenomenal job as they were spectacular in their routine. They competed in the Pom and Jazz Division where they would place 2nd for each division.
Cheer - The Varsity competition team had a strong and clean performance this weekend! Earning the team 3rd place and a new high score! A very well deserved recognition after a challenging week following our first competition of the season. Shout out to freshman Lily Andelman and sophomore Phoebe McCourt for throwing new tumbling skills and Senior Lilly for hopping back into flying after a year on the ground. Coaches are excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds. JV successfully completed their highest skills at Billerica Memorial High School, despite the trials of winter sickness. Jumping through endless hoops, they overcame tribulations that would have intimidated many. JV kept their heads held high in the face of adversity and performed an exciting and enticing routine! Congrats JV!

Girls Indoor Track & Field took part in the Bay State Conference Open last Tuesday at the Reggie Lewis Center with lots of PRs. The Most notable was a 5:42 mile from freshman Ellie Bookston. Her time was an 8 second PR and qualified her for the D1 State Championship.

Boys Swim and Dive had more than 20 season best times at the Bay State Conference Meet this week where they finished 6th. Vann Hotchkiss broke his own Conference Meet record in the 1 meter diving with a score of 3436.25. The 400 free relay team of Daniil Landau, Eithan Kogan, Shawn Yu, and Jack Reilly dropped 3.5 seconds and qualified for the South Sectional Meet at MIT next Sunday.
Girls Alpine Ski - The Needham Girls Ski Team had another successful week of racing earning a first place finish at Blue Hills Wednesday night and with a Top 10 finish by Casie Vincenzo. The girls team also had a first place finish in the combined race and Senior Day at Ragged Mt. Sunday led by sisters Adah and Elodie Rosen who finished in the Top 20.
Boys Alpine Ski team finished second overall at Blue Hills led by freshman Jake Musiak (2nd) and senior captain Will Kence (3rd) on the podium. Freshman Christian Rocamboli also had a top 10 finish. On Sunday, Will Kence , senior captain Evan Bagg, Jake Musiak, and junior Zach Raley all had Top 10 finishes to help The boys team came in second place overall finishing the combined races.
Wrestling - The Needham wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with a dual against Brookline. Senior Captain Alex Rutley, Junior Captain Daniel Burdin and Sophomore Baysangur Imakaev all secured wins for the night. The Rockets also competed over the weekend at the Middleborough Quad. The team went 1-3 against Middleborough, Newton South, Durfee and Catholic Memorial. Max Sherer had an impressive performance by securing four pins on the day. This coming Wednesday the Varsity Wrestling team will be traveling to Wellesley for their final team dual.
Gymnastics - Rocket Gymnasts had their Senior night on Tuesday, celebrating 9 Seniors, all of whom were able to show their skills to a packed audience against Walpole. With multiple 9.0 or above scores brought in by Lucy Aswad and Ella Gravin, the team scored first ever 140.1 score to Walpoles 125.8. On Friday evening the team went to Weymouth and celebrated another winning performance with a score of 137.55. A great week overall with many important contributions from Francesca DePaul, Leah Korboukh and Sarah Robbins, and all the team.
Fencing took part in a 6 team tournament at Beaver Country Day on Sunday February 2nd. The Boys team finished the day 5-1 in their duels and the girls team finished 4-2 on the day. Sophomore Joshua Weiner competing in his first competition had an 11-7 win.

Boys Indoor Track & Field - On Thursday, boys lost to Braintree 55-45 to end the dual meet season 1-4. Individual wins from Hutch Turner (600), Cash Lindsley (2 mile), Charlie Simeone (shot put), Nathan Cunoosamy (high jump), and Adham Khedr, Eytan Luria, Kaden Hu, and Cunoosamy (4x400). Special shout out to the entire distance squad as everyone who competed hit a PR. Then, on Sunday, the boys competed at the MSTCA Coaches Invite and walked away with 5 PRs and 2 qualifying times for the state championship meet in February. Josh Batsevitsky (300) and Austin Conti (1 mile) qualified with their PR performances today. Leo Winston, Sam Cooperman, and Turner accounted for the remaining PRs set.

Freshman Lucas Olson got his first career start vs Boston Latin and had 19 saves. Seniors Tommy Peabody and Will Saratella led the way for the Rockets this week with 2 goals a piece. The team is now 8-4 on the season and are ranked 21st in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Swim and Dive - The Boys swim and dive team would lose their lone swim meet of the season against crosstown rivals Wellesley. Sophomore Eithan Kogan who had a 16 second time drop and qualified for Sectionals in winning the 500 yard freestyle during the meet against Wellesley. The team prepares for the Bay State Conference Championships this coming Monday and Tuesday!
Girls Alpine Ski - The Needham Girls Ski Team participated in the Ski East Varsity Giant Slalom (GS) and Slalom Combo AJ McEachern Memorial Race Saturday. The team earned another first first place finish in the combined races! Junior Adah Rosen led the girls team finishing 12th overall to help keep the girls in first place in the Ski East girls standings.
Boys Alpine Ski - The Needham Boys Ski Team participated in the Ski East Varsity Giant Slalom (GS) and Slalom Combo AJ McEachern Memorial Race Saturday. The boys team was led once again by senior captain Will Kence who took a podium first place finish in the GS race, in addition to a podium 2nd place finish in the overall combined results. Senior captain Evan Bagg also finished in the Top 10 overall combined followed by junior Zach Raley (11th) and freshman Christian Rocamboli (12th). The boys remain in a struggle with BC High in the Ski East standings and remain in 2nd place overall in the league.
Wrestling - The team traveled to Weymouth mid week where they would lose their dual match with the Wildcats. To end the week the team hosted a quad with Foxboro , Framingham and Milton and it turned out to be an awesome event with 4 communities and a ton of great wrestling matches!
Gymnastics - Gymnastics traveled not too far to Broderick gym in Hyde Park to take on the co-op team of Brookline/Westwood (Brookwood). The team had their highest score to date of 137.95! Admirable performances by all competitors!

Girls Indoor Track & Field - The girls T&F team had 25 points and finished 6th (our highest finish ever in D1). Scoring relays were: 4 x 50 Shuttle Dash in 5th (Ava Chiappinelli, Sara MacConnell, Madison Swan, Eva Geddes), 4x 200 in 5th (Swan, Chiappinelli, Chelsea Heeger, Geddes), 4x800 in 2nd (Maddie Roach, Eva Adam, Greta Hammer and Audrey Adam), A Team Distance Medley in 2nd (Roach, MacConnell, Hammer, Audrey Adam) and B Team DMR in 8th (Eva Adam, Ava Conti, Siena Uyenoyama, Taylor Partridge).
Boys Indoor Track & Field -Boys T&F competed at the MSTCA Division 1 James Kalperis Relays on Friday. The 4x200 (Josh Batsevitsky, Charlie Flanagan, Michael Flueckiger, Nathan Cunoosamy) and 4x400 (Kyle Railton, Flueckiger, Cunoosamy, Batsevitsky) relay teams posted season best performances and the 4x400 team had the highest finish of the day, finishing in 10th place. Other notable performances include Hutch Turner running 2:07 in the 4x800 and 54s in the 400m leg of the DMR, and Ikenna St Marc with a PR in the shot put (34' 5.75").
Girls Basketball -The team went 1-1 on the week with wins over Wellesley and a loss to Bishop Feehan. Early in the week Eva Andrews led the way for the team with a double double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and to end the week at Bishop Feehan Noa Brown (14 points) and Hannah Levine (10 points) led the way for the Rockets.The team is 6-5 and is ranked 12th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Basketball - The boys went 0-2 on the week with losses to Wellesley and Newton North. Jeremy Gould scored 12 points in the Rockets double overtime loss to Welleley and Max Goodrow led the way with 10 points in the loss to Newton North. The team is 3-7 on the season and are ranked 44th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Ice Hockey - Needham Girls Hockey went 1-1 on the week with a win over Wellesley mid week and a loss over Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) to end the week. Cassie Ling and Jill Peabody led the way for the Rockets this week with 2 goals each and Katelyn Birnbaum with 2 assists on the week. The team is now 5-3-1 on the season and are ranked 18th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Ice Hockey - Boys hockey went 1-0 week with a win over Wellesley. After being down 3-0 in the game the Rockets scored 5 unanswered goals! Will Saratella led the charge with 2 goals. The team is now 7-2 on the season and are ranked 21st in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Swim and Dive - The Boys swim and dive team were on the road this week visiting a very talented Chelmsford team. The team would ultimately lose the meet and look to get back on Track Tuesday with the final home meet of the season vs Natick!
Girls Alpine Ski - Needham Girls ski team had another successful race in the Ski East League's first giant slalom race at Blue Hills Wednesday night. The Needham Girls team had a first place finish with sophomore Jessie Brandish and freshman Elodie Rosen finishing in the Top 10.
Boys Alpine Ski - Needham boys ski team had another successful race in the Ski East League's first giant slalom race at Blue Hills Wednesday night. The Boys Team had a first place finish with five racers in the Top 10 led by senior captain Will Kence who placed first in the overall individual standings! Senior captain Evan Bagg, sophomore Adam Ganetsky, and freshman Jake Musiak and Christian Rocamboli also placed in the Top 10.
Wrestling - Needham Varsity wrestling came up short against their opponents this past Wednesday in an exciting dual matchup with Braintree High School with a total team score (36-38). With a loss at 106 lbs and a forfeit at 113lbs Needham was down 12-0 going into the 120 lb weight class. Needham scored their first 6 points from Baysangur Imakaev. With two losses at 126 lbs and 132 lbs Needham had to try and overcome a 6-20 deficit. Max Sherer was able to earn another 6 points for the team at 138 lbs making the score 12-20. At 144 lbs Needham lost but was able to start gaining momentum with solid wins from 150 lb Umar Datsaev, 157lb John Marino, 165lb Robert Mahar, and 175lb Daniel Burdin. A loss at 190lb made the match 31-32, Needham down by one the Rockets were able to gain the lead 36-32 from their win at 215lbs by Dean Mostafa. The dual came to a conclusion at Heavyweight with a final score Needham 36 Braintree 38. Needham Varsity wrestling will take on Weymouth High School next Wednesday away at 7pm.
Gymnastics - Gymnastics had a busy week; starting with a late away meet Sunday night vs Wellesley where multiple gymnasts through flipping vaults, bringing in 3 individual scores of 9.0 and above. Even with two 9.0 and above scores on both beam and floor, the final score was not a winner, but it was a good meet. Tuesday, the team hosted a very hard working Natick team. Talia Muzikant and Emily Chapman debuted routines bringing Needham to a win. Friday evening Newton North came to town and showed their outstanding skills. Sophie Amodeo joined our list of competitors and though we had three 9.0 or better floor scores, the team fell short in the end.
Squash v Squashbusters - The team demonstrated incredible improvement this time around vs squashbusters! Despite facing past challenges, they achieved a significant number of victories. Notably, the team secured 3 out of 8 wins within the top 8 bracket, with only a single match determining the outcome. Beyond the top 8, the team dominated, winning the majority of their matches.
Giving back to the community: The indoor track teams collected over 120 pairs of sneakers that will be distributed by Generic Ministry to those living on the streets of Boston.

Girls Indoor Track & Field - In meet #4, the girls lost to Wellesley (65-35). Highlights were wins from Maddie Roach (300m), Greta Hammer (1 mile) and Audrey Adam (HJ). Greta’s first place result in 5:03 was a MA #1 time. The team is 2-2 on the season.
Boys Indoor Track & Field -In meet #4, the boys would lose (65.5 - 34.5) to Wellesley. Wins from Josh Batsevitsky (300), Hutch Turner (1000), Charlie Simeone (SP), Nathan Cunoosamy (HJ), and Cunoosamy, Michael Flueckiger, Turner, Batsevitsky (4x400). The team is 1-3 on the season.
Girls Basketball -The team went 2-1 on the week with wins over Milton and Newton North and a loss to Bishop Feehan. Some key performances this week were Annie Camozzi with 16 points,4 steals & 4 rebounds in the loss to Bishop Feehan, Noa Brown with 14 points and 4 rebounds in a win vs Milton and Hannah Levine with 12 points , 3 steals , 2 rebounds and 2 assists vs Newton North. The team is 5-4 and is ranked 13th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Basketball - The boys went 1-1 on the week with a win over Milton and a loss to Newton North. On Tuesday senior Sean Walker scored a career high 11 points to help the Rockets defeat Milton. Junior Andrew Chen had a great game Friday vs Newton North for the Rockets. He scored a team and career high 11 points. The team is 3-5 on the season and are ranked 41st in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Ice Hockey - Needham Girls Hockey improved to 4-2-1 this week with an OT loss to Milton 5-4 and a 3-1 win v. Newton North. Captain Katelyn Birnbaum had a goal and three assists for the week and Captain Jill Peabody added two goals and an assist for the Rockets. The team is now 4-2-1 on the season and are ranked 19th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Ice Hockey - Boys hockey with a 2-0 week with wins over Milton and Newton North. Joey Saratella scored his first career goal vs. Milton. Freshman Lucas Olson (goalie) got time and played in his first career game vs. Newton North. The team is now 6-2 on the season and are ranked 17th in the D1 MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Swim and Dive - The team went 1-1 on the week with a loss to Brookline and a win over Xaverian. This week's athlete of the week is freshman Liam Ni who won the 100 backstroke and was part of the winning 200 medley relay in the team's first win against Xaverian on Friday. The team is 1-3 on the season.
Girls Alpine Ski - The girls team finished in first place in the Peter Wall Memorial race at Ragged Mountain NH. Jessie Brandish had a 8th place finish for the team
Boys Alpine Ski - The boys team finished in first place in the Peter Wall Memorial race at Ragged Mountain NH . Jake Musiak podium 2nd and Will Kence, Evan Bagg, Zach Raley in the top 10 in the individual.
Wrestling - Needham Varsity Wrestling had an impressive week starting with their first home dual victory over Walpole winning 59-16. The Varsity squad sealed the home win with pins from Siddhant Phatak at 106 lbs, Nathan Taub at 126 lbs, Andres Lemus-Mesa at 132 lbs, Max Sherer at 138 lbs, Greyson Skroce at 144 lbs, Umar Datsaev at 150 lbs, and Dean Mostafa at 215lbs. As for their first quad dual held at Noble and Greenough over the weekend. Varsity wrestling continued their winning streak going 3-0 as a team Saturday winning 63-6 against Beaver Country Day, 44-18 against N&G and winning their final duel against Milton Academy 62-12.
Gymnastics - An outstanding start to the Gymnastics season with a strong win against Framingham Friday night. Strong routines from our Captains, Lucy Aswad including a 9.1 on floor, and Izzy LeMaire with a strong show on bars. Returning members provided solid returning scores and new team members contributed strong scores, including Ella Gravin with an 8.9 on bars and Julia Zosa a 9.1 on the floor! All together bringing NHS to an impressive 136.8 final score.
Cheerleading - The Cheer team has been working hard on game material and has had three great performances at boys and girls basketball. Both teams started working their competition routines. We are looking forward to creating and continuing traditions throughout the season.
Squash v Wellesley - The team won all of the top 8 matches and out of 16 total matches we won about 14. The team showed improvement on things being worked on in the last couple of practices. They take on Squash Busters Monday Jan 13th at Northeastern!

Boys Basketball - The boys went 1-1 on the week visiting Wakefield earlier in the week losing the game (67-57). They would win their first home game of the year versus Walpole (57-46). Junior Ben Marino scored a career high 19 points for the Rockets.
Girls Ice Hockey - Needham Girls Hockey resumed play after break with a win at Walpole (6-0), now 3-1-1. Rockets had four different scorers in the game: Sarah Porras (1); Jill Peabody (2); Cassie Ling (2); and Bella D'Amelio (2) contributed; Goalie Caitlin McNeill posted her first varsity shutout in the 6-0 win.
Boys Ice Hockey - Boys hockey went 1-1 on the week with a win at Andover (5-3) and a loss in overtime vs Walpole (3-2). Goals on the week from Matt Rutter, Will O’Donnell, Joe Kajunski and Will Saratella.

Wrestling - The wrestling teams competed in the Brendan Grant Tournament over the weekend and Varsity was able to finish 6th out of 21 teams overall. The Varsity team showed perseverance all day long at the Belmont tournament. On the day, Needham had 6 out of 10 wrestlers place in the top 6 in their weight brackets. Andres Lemus-Mesa finished 3rd place at 132 lbs. Robert Mahar finished 4th at 165lbs. Daniel Burton finished 4th place at 175lbs. Dean Mostafa finished 5th place at 215 lbs. Nathan Taub finished 6th place at 126 lbs. John Marino finished 6th place by injury default at 157 lbs. Umar Datsaev and Max Sherer both had three wins on the day. Sid Phatak earned his first win of the season at 106 lbs. JV wrestlers Jack Krupat had one pin on the day and Sam Tatar had three wins. The Needham Rockets Wrestling team will have their first home dual match of the season this upcoming Wednesday against Walpole and then on Saturday will be heading to a quad dual at Noble and Greenough in Dedham, Ma.

Boys Indoor Track & Field - Boys had a tight meet back and forth coming down to the 4x400 before falling to Walpole (55-45). Individual wins from Josh Batsevitsky (600), Charlie Simeone (SP), Nathan Cunoosamy (HJ), Luke Bold (LJ) and Jason Zhou, Charlie Flanagan, Nathan Cunoosamy, Michael Flueckiger (4x200).
Girls Basketball - The Girls went 2-2 during a 4 game stretch in a two week span. The two wins came against Brookline (41-32) and Lexington (45-35). The two losses were to Nashoba Regional (33-27) and Braintree (36-32). During the Holiday classic tournament hosted at Lexington Junior Dani Deroian was named to the all tournament team!
Boys Basketball - Over a two week period the boys basketball team went 0-3 losing to Brookline (65-50), Braintree (52-49) and Xaverian (49-36).
Girls Ice Hockey - Needham girls Hockey went 1-1 this week, beating Bay State Rival Braintree 8-1 with a five goal performance by first year Cassie Ling. The team next faced non-league, seventh-ranked, Nauset. After going down 3-0 in the first, Needham equaled the score with goals from Bella D'Amelio, Cassie Ling, and Katelyn Birnbaum. Tobi Gannon tied the game again at 4-4 in the third, but a Nauset power play and empty net goals resulted in a 6-4, hard fought loss. Needham enters the break 2-1-1.
Boys Ice Hockey - Boys hockey with a 3-0 week with wins over Brookline (6-1), Braintree (2-1) and Wellesley (4-3). Carson Brownridge (goalie) with three wins and 59 total saves in these games. This week - Matt Rutter with 3 goals, Justin Maira with 2 (one being first career), Nick Sewall with 2 and Will Rosenberg with 2 goals (one being his first career).
Boys Swim and Dive - With the only meet of the week before the break Rockets swim and dive hosted Framingham at Babson College Pool. The Rockets would end up losing the meet by a score of (105-78). The team is 0-2 on the season and will host Brookline in their next meet on January 7th.
Wrestling - Needham vs Newton North - The match started with a defeat at 106 and void at 113. The Rockets scored their first team points at 120 with a tech from Baysangur Imakaev who is (2-0) on the season. At 126, Nathan was able to lock in his second pin of the year and give the rockets a chance to comeback bringing the team score 11-12. At 132, Andres won by tech and at 138 Max Sherer won a close match and fought hard all three periods. The Rockets had a streak of tough losses at 144,150,157 and 165. Giving up 19 points in the middle weights put the Rockets down by 12 making the score 19-31. Captain, Daniel Burdin, got his second pin of the season bringing the score 25-31. Eli McCue wrestled up a weight class but was defeated at 190 and Dean locked in his first win of the season by tech. Will Alrzhawi wrestled up a weight class and lost a hard match at heavyweight bringing the final score (30-43). Sharon Lombardo Tournament - The Needham Wrestling team competed in Bristol, Rhode Island over the weekend at the Sharon Lombardo Tournament. The Rockets had two wrestlers make it to the finals, Baysangur Imakaev and Robert Mahar both finished in 2nd Place. Needham had one 4th place finish from Greyson Skroce and two 5th place finishes from Dean Mostafa and Max Sherer. Elias Langsner and Nathan Taub placed 6th. Every Needham wrestler showed a lot of heart today on the mat. The Rockets had 8 straight victories to start the tournament off, all of which were by pin. Overall on the day, the Rockets earned 17 pins of the 21 victories throughout the day. Showing great determination to put their opponents on their back for the win.
Squash took on Brookline but would drop the match (6-2) in the top 8. The team won many matches outside of the top 8.
Girls Indoor Track & Field won the first meet of the season vs Milton (56-44). Girls won 56-44! Wins during the meet came from Ava Chiappinelli (55 dash), Aviva Tarsky (1000), Maddie Roach (1 mile & LJ), Eva Scharf (2 mile), Audrey Adam A(HJ) and the 4x400 relay.
Boys Indoor Track & Field lost against Milton on Thursday 64-36. Leading the Rockets were wins from Michael Flueckiger in the 600m, Rod Krikov in the Shot Put, and Leo Winston in the 2 mile. Not only did these athletes open the season with an individual victory for the team, they all also improved their PRs in these events from last season. Leo Winston was named the Beast of the Meet for his performance in the 2 mile. His PR of 10:05.67 is currently 4th in the Conference and it qualifies him for the MIAA Division 1 State Championship Meet!
Girls Basketball went on the road as part of a Varsity doubleheader against Weymouth. The Rockets would win the game (73-21) putting up historic numbers! All 5 starters scored in double figures: Junior Annie Camozzi led the way with 13 points and 2 rebounds while Senior Callie McCarthy had 10 points, 9 assists and 5 steals! Ella Wigder, Paige Moyer, Noa Richman, Lacey Williams and Lila Jantzen all scored their first Varsity basket vs Weymouth!
Boys Basketball- During the 2nd half of the Varsity back to backs at Weymouth Rockets would will their way to a win (59-40). Senior Will Wheeler scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds. The Rockets shared the ball all night with 15 assists and only three turnovers.
Girls Ice Hockey opened up the season on the road at Weymouth. The game would finish in a (2-2) draw. Senior Caitlin McNeill, in her first start as Varsity goalie, stopped a clean breakaway with less than three minutes in the third period, to preserve the tie and force OT.
Boys Ice Hockey opened up their season at their home ice vs Weymouth. The Rockets would lose the game in overtime (3-2). Seniors Joe Kajunski and Nick Sewall each had a goal and an assist while senior Will O’Donnell added an assist. Sophomore Carson Brownridge had 25 saves.
Boys Swim and Dive opened up their season vs Newton North at the Babson College pool. While missing some athletes they still battled hard but would ultimately fall short losing the meet (98-85). Boys Swim and Dive athlete of the Week was Senior Leo Rosin who won the 100 breaststroke!
Wrestling - The Needham Varsity Wrestling team competed against Natick on Thursday. The dual started with two losses at 106 and void at 113 but Needham began to fight back and tied up the score with two pins at 120 and 126 coming from Baysangur Imakaev and Nathan Taub. Needham took the lead 12-11 and the match continued to pick up after a loss at 132 by pin. Making the score 12-17, Needham Rockets answered back with a win by decision from Andres Lemus-Mesa, winning a close battle at 138. Greyson Skroce picked up a solid pin at 144 putting the Rockets back in the lead 21-17. The next three matches went to Natick by pin. After tough losses at 150, 157, and 165, junior captain Daniel Burdin had an impressive comeback win by pin making the score 27-35. The match at 190 went to Natick by decision, 215 loss by pin and void at heavyweight. Making the final score of the first Varsity Wrestling dual against Natick (27-50). The Needham Varsity wrestling team will take on Newton North this Wednesday and compete in Bristol, Rhode Island later this weekend.
Girls Cross Country - Junior Greta Hammer competed in the 2024 Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon this past weekend. She finished 24th overall and was the individual top finisher from the Northeast region. What an incredible season from Greta!
Football fell to 3rd seed Xaverian Brothers High School in the MIAA Division 1 state championship game at Gillette stadium last thursday. Although the Rockets held Xaverian to just 14 points the Rockets would only get 7 on the board with a 30 yard pass TD from Senior Griffin Carr to Senior Aidan Williams. Senior Nick Sewall added an interception in the third quarter. The team fought hard and gave it their all and in the end came up short. The Rockets finished the season 12-1 which is the best record in NHS history!

Tryouts began Monday, December 2nd for Winter Sports and Club Coed Squash. Club Coed Fencing will start shortly after the New Year.
Football hosted Wellesley in the country's oldest public school rivalry football game. Last Thursday was the 137th game between the two towns. Before the game started Needhams own Sunita Williams did the honorary coin toss joining us on a video call from Space. The Rockets would win the game (20-13). Senior Brandt Bickford opened the scoring with a 5 yard receiving touchdown. Senior Aidan Williams had 173 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. The rockets defense held Wellesley to just 13 points and has not allowed more than 14 points in a game all season. The Rockets remain undefeated at (12-0) and will play for the Division 1 state title on Thursday December 5th at Gillette Stadium.
Girls Cross Country - The Needham Girls XC team completed a stellar season with an 8th place finish out of 28 teams at the Nike Cross Regionals meet held on 11/23 at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls! The girls were the 2nd Massachusetts team and earned All Region Honors! Junior Greta Hammer placed 2nd and qualified for the Nike Cross National Meet in Oregon on December 7th!! This is very exciting. Greta is the first Needham Cross country athlete to qualify for a XC national meet! Greta ran 18:22.3 over the extremely challenging terrain at Bowdoin Park. The Rockets tightened up their pack with the next 5 runners coming in within 31 seconds of each other! Coming in second for the Rockets and placing 80th was sophomore Maddie Roach running 20:22.3. Senior Taylor Partridge finished close behind Maddie running 20:26.5 and placing 85th. Senior Eva Adam ran 20:43.2 for 102nd followed closely by Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama in 20:50.0 in 109th. Senior Siena Uyenoyama finished 116th in 20:55.3. Senior Audrey Adam ran 21:58 for 189th. All of the Needham runners ran excellent races, gave it their all in the course and finished the season very strong! We all look forward to cheering on Greta Hammer in Oregon at Nike Cross Nationals!
Football took on the top seed St. John's Prep last Friday in the MIAA D1 final 4 matchup. The Rockets beat St John's Prep (22-14)! The defense once again had a stellar showing holding St John's Prep to 14 points and a game sealing interception from senior Ben Schreiber. Senior Griffin Carr had a rushing touchdown after a blocked punt from Junior Caden McNamee. Senior Joe Kajunski had a touchdown after a miscue offensive fumble. Senior Aidan Williams had 30 carries for 144 yards and a touchdown. The Rockets remain undefeated on the season and will play their last home game of the season on Thanksgiving morning versus cross town rivals Wellesley.
Girls Cross Country - The Needham XC Girls closed out their season on the challenging terrain of Fort Devens at the MIAA Division 1 All State meet on 11/16. Junior Greta Hammer continued her fabulous 2024 XC season with a win against a very competitive field, racing to a new course record time of 18:02.48! Greta led the Rockets to a solid 5th place team finish among the 23 teams in attendance. The team competition was very tight with the top five teams separated by only 22 points. Senior Taylor Partridge ran a well executed race to place 25th overall in the field with a time of 19:35.04, a course best time for her by 11 seconds. She was followed closely by Sophomore Maddie Roach, who finished in 29th place with a strong sprint in 19:43.07, a course best time for her by 37 seconds. Senior Eva Adam finished 4th for the Rockets in 54th place with a time of 20:14.99, followed by Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama in 20:29.55. Senior sister Siena Uyenoyama battled courageously to finish in 20:51.76 and Senior Audrey Adam finished in 22:05.62. This capped a stellar season for the 2024 Girls XC team highlighted by a 2nd place finish at the Twilight Invitational, a 2nd place finish at the Bay State Conference championships and a 1st place finish at the Division 1A Championships last Saturday, 11/9. Their 5th place team placing at the All State meet with a low score of 140 points was very impressive among the deeply competitive Division 1 girls field.
Boys Cross Country - On Saturday November 16th, Captain Leo Winston represented the NHS Rockets Boys XC team at the Division 1 Meet of Champions held on the challenging 5 kilometer Cross Country course at Devens. Leo ran close to other top Bay State Conference runners throughout the race, finishing 100th in the field of 186 finishers in a time of 17:21.56. Leo's participation in this elite competition was the result of his dedication and consistent hard work over the past year, capping a strong season that saw him achieve a huge one minute and 32 improvement over his personal record as a junior.
Girls Soccer - Needham High School girls soccer team lost in the round of eight in the MIAA Division One soccer tournament to Bishop Feehan 3-2. Junior Hannah Levine tied the match 1-1 with 25 minutes to go in the first half off an assist from junior Jess Brayer. Senior Callie McCarthy put the Rockets ahead 2-1 in the early moments of the second-half. Unfortunately, Bishop Feehan scored two unanswered goals to win the match 3-2. The Rockets had an exceptional fall campaign ending the season at 15-5-1 and being ranked the 5th best team in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Freshman Sam Horvat was a Bay State League Honorable Mention All-Star. Senior Ava Chiappinelli was named as both a Bay State League All-Star and Eastern Massachusetts All-Star.
Girls Volleyball took on Newton North in the final 4 match on Tuesday November 12 at Newton South HS. The Rockets would end up losing the game (3-0). The Rockets would finish the season with a 17-6 record and a final 4 appearance for a 2nd year in a row!
Football took on Central Catholic High School last week in the 2nd round of the MIAA D1 tournament winning (31-7)! The defense once again had a stellar showing holding Central Catholic to just 96 yards of offense and a pick six from senior Ben Schreiber. Senior Griffin Carr was 7 of 11 throwing for 114 yards, 6 of those completions were to senior Joe Kajunski (6 catches for 106 yards). Senior Aidan Williams had 20 carries for 130 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Rockets remain undefeated on the season and will go on the road to a neutral site for a semi final matchup vs St. John's Prep.
Coed Unified Basketball took part in a 7 team jamboree last week at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. The team had a great showing, playing hard and ending their season on a high note.
Cheer took part in the MSSA Fall 2024 Fall Cheerleading South regional championship on Sunday November 17 at Franklin High School. After going through a challenging week, our rockets rallied together and performed their best- scoring the highest they have this season
Girls Swim & Dive finished tied for 3rd place as a team with Newton North at the MIAA D1 State Championships with 227 total points! Freshman Andrea Qie came in 1st place in two different events and Senior Becky Hwang came in first place in the 100 backstroke giving the Rockets 2 individual state champs! The 200 medley relay team came in 3rd place behind Acton Boxborough and Brookline!
Girls Cross Country - The Needham Girls XC team WON the Div 1A championship race on Saturday, 11/9 at Northfield Mountain, MA! The girls faced many of the top teams in the state including Lexington, Weymouth, Cambridge Rindge and Latin and Newton North. Junior Greta Hammer raced to victory on the challenging terrain at Northfield, running away from the field and posting the fastest time of the day. She ran 18:13.9 with second place Aoife Shovlin from Cambridge Rindge and Latin finishing 43 seconds back in 18:57. Following Greta, the Needham Girls showed a stellar pack running with only 25 seconds separating their next five runners. Sophomore Maddie Roach led the Needham Rocket pack placing 17th in 20:02.5. Senior Taylor Partridge followed closely, placing 18th in 20:04.94. Senior Eva Adam placed 22nd in 20:21.4 followed closely by Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama in 23rd in 20:22.27. Senior Siena Uyenoyama was the team's 6th finisher, executing a stellar race and finishing 26th in 20:27.27. Senior Audrey Adam placed 56th in 21:47.63. What a GREAT DAY for the team! The Rockets travel to Fort Devens next Saturday 11/16 for the All State Meet where they will face all of the top Division 1 teams in the state!
Boys Cross Country - The Boys Cross Country Team traveled to Northfield Mountain to compete in the MIAA Tournament Division 1 Wave A race. The Northfield course is a challenging, rolling course, opening up with a steep 1000 meter long climb in the first mile. The Rocket boys performed well, finishing 13th of 22 teams in the division. Senior captain Leo Winston once again led the team with a strong run of 17:18 on the hilly venue, earning entry into Division 1 Championships next Saturday. The second Rockets runner to cross the line was senior Hutch Turner at 17:54. Hutch continued his run of impressive racing with his strongest run of the season. Senior Captain Sam Cooperman ran a gritty race finishing in 18:09. Rapidly improving sophomore Austin Conti shined with an 18:13 effort, achieving his highest team place of the year. Junior Sam Gustat (18:14) put in another gusty performance to round out the Rockets scoring top 5. First year sophomore Kaden Hu put in a strong run finishing in 19:02. Senior veteran Matteo Fucentese finished in 19:50 as the seventh Rockets runner. While Leo will move forward to All-States as an individual, this race marked the end of team competition for the boys. This year's senior captains provided strong leadership to a young varsity group that shows great promise for next year's season. With seven of the top twelve varsity athletes returning next year, this enthusiastic, hard working, dedicated group of returning athletes is poised for a strong 2025 season.
Boys Soccer Boys soccer had a tournament run that spanned 3 games last week, winning at home against Marshfield on Sunday 2-0 in a dominant performance, upsetting #9 Lincoln-Sudbury 1-0 in double OT on Tuesday, and then the run came to an end on Saturday losing to #8 seed St. John's Shrewsbury 1-0 in double OT. The 3 game tournament run saw stellar play out of their defense anchored by Juniors Lukas Berner, Jack Clapham, Michael Zhabinsky, and Sophomore Emi Costa Farre. The team went just over 265 minutes of tournament play without giving up a goal, before giving up the goal that ended the season in OT.
Girls Soccer - On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the Needham high school girls varsity soccer team played a home match at Memorial Park in the first round of the state soccer tournament. Freshman Syd Kalaw opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on an assist from junior Maeve Newman. Sophomore Izzy Marino got the second goal with 15 minutes to go in the first half on an assist from Syd Kalaw. In the second half junior Hannah Levine scored off another assist from freshman Syd Kalaw. The final goal was scored unassisted by freshman Sam Horvat on a shot from 35 yards out. The player of the match was Maeve Newman. On Saturday, November 10, the girls varsity soccer team defeated Winchester high school 2-1 in the round of 16 in the MIAA Div 1 state tournament. Halfway into the first half junior Hannah Levine headed in a corner kick delivered by sophomore Izzy Marino. Eight minutes later freshman Syd Kalaw scored a far post goal off an assist from senior Kate O’Nullian. Winchester pulled a goal back midway through the second half but the Rockets hung on for the remainder of the match. Senior goalkeeper Natalia Ly was player of the match. The Rockets now play Wednesday evening in the round of eight against Bishop Feehan High school at Bishop Feehan High school in Attleboro, Massachusetts.
Girls Volleyball- Girls volleyball has had an exciting week advancing to the Final Four with a thrilling 5 set match win over Newton South on Wednesday and a (3-1) win over Winchester in the Elite 8 on Saturday. Junior Coco Cusick had an amazing week with 19 kills and 7 blocks. Alex Sykora finished the week strong with 24 kills and 7 aces. Lisa O’Leary added 20 more kills and Sadie Stants had 16 kills. The girls play Newton North in a rematch of the 2023 state semi finals on Tuesday, November 12th at Newton South at 7:30pm.
Football took on Wachusett Regional High School last week in the first round of the MIAA D1 tournament winning (49-13)! The team scored 49 points in the first half with 302 yards of offense in the first half! Senior Aidan Williams had 15 carries for 201 yards and 5 total touchdowns for the game. The Rockets remain undefeated on the season and will host Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.
Dance took part in the MSSA State championship meet this past weekend. The team got 2 chances to show off their awesome dance routines competing in the Pom category and Jazz category. The team would finish 2nd in pom and 3rd in Jazz!
Girls Swim & Dive - The girls competed in the MIAA D1 south sectionals this past weekend. The team finished in 2nd place overall scoring 291 points! They will prepare this week for the MIAA D1 State championship meet taking place at Boston University on Sunday Nov 10!
Girls Cross Country - The Needham Girls XC Team had a terrific showing at the Frank Mooney Invitational at The Wrentham Developmental Center on Saturday, November 2nd. All five girls who competed received medals! In the Girls Sophomore race, Sidney Gilbreth placed 7th in the field with a huge personal best time of 20:45. Maiva King ran a time equal to her personal best from last week on the same course finishing with a time of 21:34 placing 15th. Marisa Williams finished in 30th place with a time of 22:40. In the Giris Junior race, Katie Burns ran a very well paced race, finishing with a personal record time of 20:45 for 11th place. Story Bracker placed 16th in the field with a time of 21:13. The Rockets Girls XC team will compete next Saturday, 11/8 at the Division 1 meet at Northfield Mountain.
Boys Cross Country - This week a group of eleven varsity and junior varsity athletes competed in the Frank Mooney Invitational at the Wrentham Development Center. This invitational has a unique, grade-based, race competition structure. It provides opportunities for athletes to tune up for the MIAA tournament or to race one final time in pursuit of season and personal records. It was a very successful day for the Rocket Athletes with each of the eleven runners recording personal best times for 5000 meters. Varsity runners and MIAA Tournament alternates, sophomore Duncan Alexander and junior Joe Bonovonlata, led the way running 18:20 in their races, recording 16 and 14 second prs respectively. Senior Captain Ryan McCarthy ended his NHS Cross Country Career with an inspired run. Cheered on by his teammates Ryan shattered his personal records and seasonal records with an 18:47 run, a 42 second pr, and a 1:42 seasonal record. Ryan demonstrated remarkable persistence and dedication throughout the season overcoming injury and illness to cap his career on a high note. Varsity runners Harrison O'Garr and Lincoln Maxwell both capped their seasons with strong runs, each recording 23 second prs, breaking the 19:00 barrier for the first time. The Rockets Boy's team will put its top 7 runners on the line this upcoming Saturday at the MIAA Wave A race at the Northfield Mountain course.
Field Hockey - The 24th seeded Rockets traveled to cross town rivals 9th seeded Wellesley for a MIAA Round of 32 matchup. The team would see its season come to a close with a (6-0) loss. They finished the season with a 6-11-1 record. We thank our seniors for all their hard work and dedication to the program!
Boys Soccer closed out their regular season last week at Lincoln Sudbury (3-1) loss. The Rockets landed the 24th seed and hosted a preliminary game on Sunday 11/3 defeating Marshfield (2-0). Seniors Max Edwards and Oliver Pollack were the two goalscorers for the rockets. The boys will travel back to Lincoln Sudbury to take on the #9 seed in the MIAA D1 round of 32 on Tuesday 11/5!
Girls Soccer - The Needham High School Girls Varsity soccer team finished their season with a 1-0 victory Concord Carlisle High School. Sophomore, Izzy Marino scored the lone goal in the match off an assist from senior Kyra Wolin. Sophomore Emery Carr was awarded Player of the Match for her outstanding man-marking defensive effort. The #5th seeded Rockets will host #28 Lexington in the MIAA D1 round of 32 on Tues 11/5 at Memorial Field.
Girls Volleyball- Girls volleyball kicked off the playoffs in the round of 32 with a 3-0 win over Braintree. Sadie Stants led the way with 13 kills to 1 error. Lisa O’Leary had 8 kills to no errors. Alex Sykora added 7 more kills. Bella Lee had 4 aces and 21 assists. Next, they’ll play at home on Tuesday at 6:30pm vs. the winner of Newton South/Westford. Lizzy Tam, Sadie Stants and Alex Sykora were named as Bay State Conference all stars, and Lisa O’Leary was recognized as the honorable mention!
Football took on Framingham this past week for their final regular season game. The Rockets would win the game (37-0). The team is currently 8-0 on the season and finished 4th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings. They will host Wachusett Regional High School this Friday 11/8 in the MIAA D1 Tournament Round of 16.
Cheerleading - Strong performances at Bay States this weekend by both JV and Varsity Cheer. Varsity advanced to Regionals with their highest score of the season. JV also scored the highest they have this season! Congratulations to our Honorable Mention Sofi Galan and Conference All Star Charlotte Lawrence!
Girls Swim & Dive - Senior Mila Piatkov and Junior Genevieve Smith are the Girls Swim & Dive Rockets of the Week. On Tuesday 10/22, senior captain Mila Piatkov competed in her signature distance events: the 200 and 500 freestyle. In both her individual events as well as her relays, Mila fought for every finish, out touching our Wellesley rivals in two races and earning critical points. While ultimately the team couldn’t pull out the win (88-96), Mila’s focus and determination set an example for our underclassmen for what it means to step up and perform, on Senior Night nonetheless! Mila has qualified for sectionals and states in both the 200 and 500 and we know she’ll keep fighting for every finish in the postseason. On Sunday 10/27, Genevieve Smith had major drops in both her individual events at the Bay State Conference meet. Genevieve has been working hard all season to qualify for the postseason, and has proven her versatility in doing so. At Tuesday’s senior night, Genevieve went a personal best time in the 200 IM and qualified for sectionals for the first time ever! On Sunday she dropped again for a personal best time in that event! We can’t wait to see her hard work pay off this week at Sectionals!
Girls Cross Country - The Needham Girls Cross Country team had a stellar finish at the Bay State Conference championship on Saturday, 10/26 at the Wrentham Developmental Center. In the Varsity race, Junior Greta Hammer led from the gun to finish first with another personal record time of 17:31.97 over the rolling terrain. The team was in a tight battle with the top 4 teams separated by 5 points. Needham placed second in a tiebreaker against Weymouth with 65 points each. Junior Taylor Partridge placed 13th in the field with another low 19 minute clocking at 19:04.99. Sophomore Maddie Roach raced to another personal record time of 19:26.64 placing 14th and passing several runners in the last 600m of the race. Senior Eva Adam placed 19th in 19:41.51 and Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama was the team's 5th runner, passing several athletes in the final 800m with a new personal record time of 19:41.51. Senior Siena Uyenoyama broke the tie with Weymouth by placing 5 spots ahead of Weymouth's 6th runner in a season best time of 20:14.01. Senior Audrey Adam was the team's 7th runner displacing athletes to contribute to the team's overall scoring. The Needham Girls team overall had a stellar showing throughout the meet. The Rockets now prepare for the Divisional Championships at Northfield Mountain on 11/9.
Boys Cross Country - On Saturday October 26th the Boys team competed in the Bay State Conference Cross Country Championship Meet in Wrentham, finishing 7th out of 10 teams with a score of 168 points. Many Rocket runners recorded personal bests over the 3 and 5 kilometer race distances. The boys varsity team was once again led by senior Leo Winston who finished 15th overall with a time of 16:22, just off his personal best. Senior captain Sam Cooperman and senior Hutch Turner had strong days, achieving big personal bests of 16:57 and 17:05, finishing 27 and 33rd as the Rockets 2nd and 3rd scorers. They were followed closely by junior Sam Gustat (43rd), and rapidly improving sophomore Austin Conit (54th), who also achieved a significant PR, dipping under the 18:00 minute barrier for the first time in his career with a time of 17:56. This meet wrapped up the regular season and the varsity team will prepare for the MIAA Division 1 Tournament on November, 9th at the Northfield Mountain course.
Field Hockey - The team went 1-1 on the week with a win at Braintree (3-0) and a loss at home vs Walpole (4-0). Field Hockey finished the regular season at 6-10-1 for the season and ranked 25th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings. The team awaits bracket release from the MIAA this week and is gearing up for tournament play!
Boys Soccer went 1-2 on the week with losses vs Braintree (3-0), Brookline (2-0) and a win at Walpole (5-0). Junior Connor O’Brien and senior Nolan Gannon scored their first career varsity goals this week vs Walpole! The team is currently 9-7-1 and is ranked 20th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings. They take on Lincoln Sudbury this week in their final regular season game.
Girls Soccer -The NHS girls varsity soccer team went 1-2 on the week with a win at Braintree (3-2) and losses to Walpole (2-1) Acton-Boxborough (1-0). Hannah Levine (Jr) and Michelle Faynstein (Jr) both had 2 goals each on the week. Syd Kalaw (Fr) and Izzy Marino (soph) both got on the scoresheet with assists. The girls travel to Concord Carlisle for the final regular season match this week. The team is currently 12-4-1 and is ranked 5th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Volleyball- Girls volleyball finished the regular season going 2-0 on the week with (3-0) wins against Braintree and Walpole. Thursday, October 24th was their Senior Recognition Game where they celebrated the accomplishments of the seven seniors: Kelsey Pittman, Ceci Skala, Ella Rosenbaum, Lisa O'Learly, Emma Nolfi, Alex Sykora, and Mary Carr. That game concluded the regular season where the team won the Herget Title for the 7th year in a row and finished the season at 14-5 and #5 in the Power Ranking. Now the girls gear up for the playoffs this week!
Football took on Weymouth this past week for their final regular season home game. The Rockets would win the game (21-3). It was another great showing for the defense only allowing 3 points. Senior quarterback Griffin Carr completed 9 out of 10 passes for 112 yards and threw 2 touchdowns. Senior Aidan Williams had 29 carries for 138 rushing yards. Senior Matt Ferriera had a rushing touchdown and seniors Ben Schreiber and Brandt Bickford each had receiving TDs. The team is currently 7-0 on the season and are ranked 5th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Cheerleading - The Varsity and JV team competed in the Natick Invitational this past week where they had a great showing and great performances! The team now turns their attention to the Bay State Conference competition which will take place in Framingham Sunday November 3rd.
Dance - The team had a great showing at the Endicott competition placing 2nd in the Jazz division and 7th place in the pom division. The 4th-7th place teams were all separated by just a few points! The Rockets were recognized for the Best Technique Award. The team is now preparing for King Phillip Invitational Sunday November 3rd.
Girls Swim & Dive - Emma Zhang and Paige Ingrando are the Girls Swim & Dive Rockets of the Week. On Tuesday 10/15, senior captain Emma Zhang stepped up and competed in both distance freestyle events. Her 200 Free remained consistent with her top times this season, and her 500 Free was a personal best time! Emma has brought such positive energy to the team this season, and has certainly proven herself as a leader both in and out of the pool. She continues to push herself each and everyday at practice and has been motivated to try new events at our meets this season. On Friday 10/18, Paige Ingrando continued her dominance 100 Breast and helped secure the team their seventh win of the season! Paige has remained focused on cutting time in her events and her hard work has paid off -- she has qualified for sectionals in the 100 Breast. We’re looking forward to seeing where her hard work takes her as we head into our last week of the regular season! The team went 2-0 on the week with wins over Natick (93-83) and Weymouth (96-68). This puts the team at 7-2 heading into the last week of the regular season.
Girls Cross Country - On Wednesday night, 10/16 the Rockets honored their seniors at the final home meet of the season at Cutler Park. The girls won the meet against Wellesley with a score of (19 to 44). Greta Hammer blasted another her 3rd 18 effort in 7 days and ran 17:54. Coming in third in the race was Senior Taylor Partridge, followed by Sophomore Maddie Roach and a large group of Rockets racing as a pack including Senior Eva Adam, Freshman Eva Scharf, Senior Audrey Adam, Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama and Senior Siena Uyenoyama. Several Rockets ran personal bests on the day. The Rockets close out the regular season with a record of 7-2. The Bay State Conference meet will be held this Saturday, 10/26 at the Wrentham Development Center. The team is excited to make a run for the team title.
Boys Cross Country - The Boys Cross Country team hosted rival Wellesley for the final BSC dual meet of the season. Senior Leo Winston finished first in 16:32, 35 seconds ahead of the first Wellesley runner. With his win Leo achieved an undefeated season record on our Cutler Park home course. Needham's second and third place finishers, Sam Gustat and Sam Cooperman, infiltrated the Wellesley pack, achieving 5k personal records. The team score was (Wellesley 20 - Needham 43). Both Varsity and JV teams ran well, with over half of the team achieving personal records at 5k (Varsity) and 2500 meters (JV). On Saturday the boys traveled to the historic Franklin Park venue to compete in the Catholic Memorial Invitational. Sophomores Austin Conti, Kaden Hu and Cash Lindsley were the first three Rockets runners with strong runs against top regional competition. This week the Rockets begin championship season facing off against all the Bay State Conference teams in the BSC Championship meet in Wrentham. In addition to the team's athletic success, four Rocket XC runners were recently recognized in Dr. Dan Gutekanst's Superintendent's update email for their academic achievements. XC Team Captains Sam Cooperman and Ryan McCarthy, along with senior teammate Ben Fogler were recognized for their performance on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test: as Semi Finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program. These Boys Cross Country team members accounted for 3 of the 6 NHS students achieving this status. In addition, junior Lincoln Maxwell was recognized by Dr. Gutekanst. Lincoln was a member of the NHS team participating in the National History Day Competition in Washington, DC. Lincoln's team finished in the top ten projects nationally and won a Massachusetts Outstanding Entry Award for their website on the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.
Field Hockey - The team went 1-0 on the week with a win over Framingham (10-0). This puts the team at 5-9-1 for the season and ranked 25th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings. Two big games coming up this week for Field Hockey at Braintree and taking on Walpole at home.
Boys Soccer went 0-2 on the week with losses at Weymouth (3-1) and at Framingham (4-0). Senior Captain Max Edwards had the lone goal of the week for the Rockets against Weymouth. The team is currently 8-5-1 and is ranked 18th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Soccer - The team went 3-0 on the week with wins over Weymouth (1-0), Framingham (2-0) and Westwood (1-0). Goalscorers for the week were Junior Jess Brayer, Sophomore Isabel Marino with two and freshman Sydney Kalaw with one. Senior goalkeeper Natalia Ly with three shutouts on the week! The team is currently 11-2-1 and is ranked 3rd in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Volleyball- Girls volleyball went 2-1 on the week with wins over Weymouth (3-0) and Framingham (3-0) and a tight loss to Barnstable (3-1). Setters Raleigh Dellamarggio and Bella Lee did an excellent job leading the offense the entire week. The Rockets will finish off the regular season this week away at Braintree and then with Senior Recognition Night on Thursday vs Walpole. The team is currently 12-5 and is ranked 5th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Football went on the road to play Braintree this week and would win the game (31-9). Senior Aidan Williams had 19 carries for 183 yards and 4 TDs. The team is currently 6-0 on the season and are ranked 5th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings. They take on undefeated Weymouth next week in another BSC Showdown.
Cheerleading - The Varsity and JV team competed in the Milford Invitational this past week where they had a great showing and great performances! Varsity finished last in their division, scoring a 66.4 with a new stunt score sheet! The team are preparing for the next competition next week at Natick!
Coed Unified Basketball would fall short to Lincoln Sudbury in last week's matchup. The game went to Double OT and came down to the wire, losing on a last minute basket. The team takes on Walpole in the A gym on Wednesday October 23rd at 3:45 PM in their Senior recognition contest.
Girls Swim & Dive - Julia Rowe is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. Senior captain Julia Rowe has been super consistent this season in the 100 Fly and distance freestyle events. On Tuesday 10/8, Julia had strong performances in both the 200 and 500 freestyle helping the team secure a win against Walpole. Julia’s hard work and leadership shines at every practice and meet. She has qualified for sectionals in the 100 Fly, and we know that her dedication will push her towards even more success as we near the end of the regular season. Way to go, Julia!
Girls Cross Country - On October 9th, the NHS Girls XC team competed against Weymouth and Braintree on their home course at Cutler Park in Needham. The team split the meet with a win over Braintree (19 to 47) and a very close loss to Weymouth (27 to 28). The highlight of the meet was a new Cutler course record by Junior Greta Hammer in 17:47. Her time bested the course record set back in 2015 by 16 seconds and was a personal record for the Rocket runner. Several Needham runners set personal or season best times on the course, including Seniors Taylor Partridge and Eva Adam placing 2nd and 3rd for the Rockets in 19:32 and 19:34 respectively. Sophomore Maddie Roach set a personal record of 20:04 with a very strong sprint finish. Senior Audrey Adam placed next for the team followed by Siena Uyenoyama who ran a season best time of 20:23. Freshman Eva Scharf set a 2 min personal best running 20:45 and placing 7th for the team. The Varsity team took part in the MSTCA Twilight meet at the Cape Cod Fair Grounds on Sunday afternoon and came in 2nd place overall out of 29 teams!
Boys Cross Country - This week the Needham Boys faced off against Weymouth and Braintree and came away with two close wins to improve the season record to 5 wins and 3 losses. The Needham boys demonstrated smart tactical racing to seal the two wins , (27-32) over Weymouth and (28-38) over Braintree. Senior Captain Leo Winston once again took the overall victory sprinting to the finish line with a time of 16:27, his best performance at Cutler Park. The Needham top pack of Sam Gustat, Hutch Turner, Matteo Fucentese and Captain Sam Cooperman delivered, finishing ahead of Weymoth's 4th runner and Braintree's lead pack. Additionally, Needham's 2nd pack of Kaden Hu, Austin Conti and Cash Lindsley placed ahead of Weymouth's 5th runner to ensure the team win. It was a fast day of racing with many Needham varsity and junior varsity runners achieving personal records over 5k and 2.5k distances.
Field Hockey - The team went 1-2 on the week with a win over Weymouth (5-0) and tough close losses to Milton (2-1) and Concord-Carlisle (2-0). This puts the team at 4-9-1 for the season and ranked 26th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Soccer The Boys Varsity Soccer team got back on track this week with two wins (2-1) over Milton in a league match and (1-0) over Bedford in non-league play. The defense saw a lot of new faces getting significant playing time as the team battled through injuries. Jack Clapham, Michael Roach, and Lukas Berner all stepped up and played great to help solidify a couple wins anchored by their defensive play. Matteo Neretti netted the game winner in a come from behind win over Milton with Avery Brodsky earning a goal and an assist. Ben Tatar scored a header on a corner kick for the lone goal in the win over Bedford. The team has two big league matches this week on the road against Weymouth and Framingham. The team is currently 8-3-1 and is ranked 10th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Soccer - The team went 1-0 with the lone game of the week with a (2-0) win at Milton on Tuesday October 8, 2024. Syd Kalaw (Fr) scored the first goal 15 minutes into the match on an assist from Sam Horvat (Fr). Izzy Marino (Soph) scored the second goal 35 minutes into the first half off a corner that Milton mis-headed into their own goal. Another clean sheet by Natalia Ly (Sr). Ava Chiappinelli was again stellar (as she has been all season in defense. The team is currently 8-2-1 and is ranked 3rd in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Volleyball- Girls volleyball went 2-1 on the week, with a (3-1) loss to #2 Lincoln Sudbury, a (3-0) win over Milton, and a (3-1) win over Concord Carlisle. Senior Alex Sykora led the way with 13 aces and 25 kills on the week! The team is currently 10-4 and is ranked 5th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Football - The team had a bye week and will visit Braintree this upcoming week for a BSC showdown. The team is currently 5-0 on the season and are ranked 6th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Golf - Nick Buckley is the Boys Golf Rocket of the week for this week. He had 7 over for the 4 matches with scores of E, +2, +3, and +2 for the week. The team went 3-1 on the week with wins over Medfield (98-96), Weymouth (103-92) and Framingham (86-78). The lone loss of the week came to Brookline (104-100). The team finishes the regular season with an overall record of 6-10!
Cheerleading - The JV and Varsity squads are hard in preparation for their first competition of the season on Sunday 10/20 in which they will take part in the Milford Invitational at Milford HS (MA).
Coed Unified Basketball - The team picked up their first win of the season on the road against Braintree (48-31)! They will be on the road this week at Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School.
Girls Swim & Dive - Becky Hwang is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. On Tuesday 10/1, senior captain Becky Hwang swam her heart out — anchoring the medley and 400 free relay, fighting through the 200 IM, and battling it out in the 100 back. In her individual races, Becky out-touched her opponents to earn a first and second place finish. As one of the final legs in the first and last relay of the night, Becky had clutch finishes that secured her relays with first place points. Though the team fell short of a W,(97-89 loss to Brookline) Becky’s willingness to step up and stay focused during challenging races not only showed off her athletic talent but also her leadership. Becky has qualified for sectionals and states in every event she’s competed in this season — we can’t wait to see her performances in the final dual meets & postseason! The team is currently 4-2 on the season.
Girls Cross Country - The Needham Varsity Girls XC team had a terrific meet with a solid win over Brookline (16 to 47). Junior Greta Hammer cruised to victory on the 2.76 mile very hilly course at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline running 17:51. Sophomore Maddie Roach placed 2nd for the Rockets running 18:59, with Seniors Taylor Partridge and Eva Adam following closely in 19:01 and 19:02. Senior Siena Uyenoyama battled courageously with the first Brookline athlete, coming in 6th overall with a time of 19:29. Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama and Junior Katie Burns were the 6th and 7th Rockets to finish, placing 7th and 8th overall in the race. The Needham Girls placed 9 of their runners in the top 10. Next up is a tri-meet on the home course at Cutler Park in Needham against Weymouth and Braintree on Wednesday, 10/9.
Boys Cross Country - This week the Rocket Boys Cross Country team participated in two meets. On Tuesday 10/1, the Rockets took on Brookline on the classic Larz Anderson course. Varsity lost to Brookline (15 to 49) . Leo Winston led the Rockets with a 7th place overall. On Saturday the team participated in the 20th Annual Battle of the Border hosted by Alvirne High School in Hudson New Hampshire. This meet annually sees top New Hampshire and Massachusetts teams facing off for top honors. The Rockets had many strong performances with 14 of 18 athletes in the Varsity and JV 5k runs achieving personal records. In the Varsity 5k race the Needham Boys placed 11th out of 24 teams. Leo Winston was the top Rocket finisher at 12th in the team scoring with another PR of 16:09. Leo's time puts him in the top 10 Rockets at 5k over the history of the program. Sam Gustat and Hutch Turner cracked the top 50 with strong runs recording big PRs of 17:23 (48th) and 17:25 (49th). Sam Cooperman and Matteo Fucentese also had strong runs to round out the 5 team scorers.
Field Hockey - The team went 0-2 on the week with a loss to Natick (2-0) and a tough matchup vs Lincoln Sudbury (5-2). Field Hockey has a busy week coming up with 3 games in 4 days. The team is currently 3-7-1 on the season and is ranked 24th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Soccer - The team went 0-1-1 on the week with a loss to Natick (2-0) and a tie to Weymouth (1-1). Junior Nils Svensson scored his first career varsity goal for the Rockets vs Weymouth It was Needham Soccer night on Saturday in which the boys and girls Varsity teams had back to back games against Needham in which members of the YMCA and Needham youth soccer program got to walk out with players before the game! The team is currently 6-3-1 and is ranked 12th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Soccer - The team went 1-1 on the week with a loss to Natick (2-0) and a win over Weymouth (1-0). It was Needham Soccer night on Saturday in which the boys and girls Varsity teams had back to back games against Needham in which members from the TOPS soccer program got to walk out with players before the game! Against Weymouth Hannah Levine (Jr) got the match winner with 11 minutes to go in the match on an assist from Maeve Newman (Jr). Outstanding defensive effort again by Ava Chiappinelli (Sr) and very good hold up play by striker Izzy Marino (Soph). The team is currently 7-2-1 and is ranked 6th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Girls Volleyball- Girls volleyball had a great week going 2-0. On Monday 9/30 , they defeated Newton South (3-2) while partaking in a Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness game. Together with Newton South, they raised over $2,000.00 bringing their continued fundraising efforts for the SideOut Foundation to over $30,000. On Tuesday, they defeated Natick (3-1). Junior Lizzy Tam had an amazing serving and defensive week and was named a Boston Globe Player of the Week. Junior Sadie Stants with a great performance offensively. The team is currently 8-3 and is ranked 6th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Football - The team went on the road to take on Walpole. Aidan Williams had 29 carries for 187 yards and 2 TDs to help the team beat Walpole 21-10. This is the first time football has won at Walpole since 2006. The team is currently 5-0 on the season and are ranked 6th in D1 in the MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Golf - On Wednesday 10/2 three members of the Boys Golf team (Sean Concannon , Wyatt Ali, and Nick Buckley) represented Needham at the Bay State Conference Championships that took place at the Braintree Municipal Golf Course. They came in 4th place out of 10 teams finishing with a total score of 246. Nick Buckley was named an all star after shooting a 78 at the Bay State Conference Tournament which was tied for 8th.
Cheerleading - Cheer is looking forward to some Fall team bonding this week. Both JV and Varsity have been working hard in preparation for their first competition on 10/20 at Milford
Coed Unified Basketball - The team went on the road last week to take on the Timberwolves of Walpole in what was a very tight and close game. The game would end up in a tie 54-54. The team is on the road again this week visiting Braintree!
Girls Swim & Dive - Lucy Aswad and Natalie Guarrera are the Girls Swim & Dive Rockets of the Week. On Tuesday 9/24, Lucy earned a first place finish and a personal best in diving with a score of 220 in a very tight meet vs. Acton Boxborough (98-85 Loss) . Lucy punched her ticket to states early on this season, and with her consistent effort to challenge herself with new dives and high degrees of difficulty we know she’ll continue to crush it in the second half of the season! On Friday 9/27, Natalie secured a first place finish in the 100 Fly and a second place finish in the 100 Back — and both events earned her season best times. In a meet where every race was highly competitive, Natalie’s determination and grit allowed her to edge out her competition and helped earn a (99-88) win against a very talented Newton North team. Natalie has qualified for the postseason in the 50 Free, 100 Back, and 100 Fly, and we’re looking forward to seeing where her hard work takes her as we head into October!
Girls Cross Country - The Needham Rockets Girls XC team had a terrific day on Wednesday 9/25 winning both Varsity and JV races in a tri-meet against Milton and Walpole held at Walpole High School. The Varsity Girls beat Walpole (20 to 39) and Milton (21 to 41). Senior Taylor Partridge was 2nd in the race just one tick behind the winner from Walpole with an exciting track sprint finish. She covered the 2.57 mile course in 15:53. Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama was next for the Rockets, followed closely by Senior Siena Uyenoyama. Sophomore Maddie Roach and Junior Janie Urban went 4th and 5th for the team on the day. Racing in her first Varsity contest this year, sophomore Ava Conti was the team's 6th finisher!
Boys Cross Country - On Wednesday September 25th Needham traveled to Walpole, competing against Walpole and Milton on Walpole’s 2.57 mile rolling course. The Needham Varsity boys defeated Milton (21 to 39), and lost to Walpole (20 to 39). Leo Winston was the top Rocket runner, finishing 3rd overall in 13:57 close behind the top Walpole and Milton runners. Junior Sam Gustat was the 2nd Rocket finisher, running a gutsy race by breaking up the Walpole pack, achieving the best result of his career. Matteo Fucentese and rapidly improving sophomores Austin Conti and Cash Lindsley also had strong runs to lead the Rockets to a win over Milton.
Field Hockey went 0-2 last week with losses to Newton North (4-2) and Wellesley (1-0). Field Hockey is ranked 22nd in the state in the Fall 2024 first edition of MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Soccer - went 1-1 last week. On Tuesday they found themselves down 3-1 early in the second half against Wellesley. They played an aggressive and dominant second half led by junior Avery Brodsky's hat trick to take the lead 4-3 and the team held on for the victory to remain undefeated in league play. On Saturday the team traveled to Concord-Carlisle to participate in the Kicks for Cancer against St. John's Prep. They honored loved one's who have battled cancer by donning their names across the back of their uniforms. Despite a strong performance on the pitch, the team gave up a couple late goals and fell to SJP 2-1. They hope to return to winning ways with games against Natick on Tuesday and the early game of the boys and girls soccer double header against Weymouth on Saturday night. Boys soccer is ranked 7th in the state in the Fall 2024 first edition of MIAA Power Rankings.

Sophomore Antoine Lewis had 8 rushes for 86 yards and a TD. Cheerleading - Cheer had a great week. JV is excited to have their competition choreography! The cheer program had fun bringing back the vintage uniforms and adding in a new quarter change dance for a throwback game. Thank you to NJR for helping with the tunnel and banner!
Coed Unified Basketball took on Natick last week in an exciting matchup that showcased the true competitiveness of both programs. Every play was a battle, and it was a great game to watch. This week, they'll be traveling to Walpole for another tough Bay State Conference showdown!
Girls Swim & Dive - Chloe Afzali is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. On Tuesday 9/17, Chloe competed in the 500 Free and 100 Breast in the meet against Braintree. Her performances so far this season have been critical in securing top finishes in her events and in her first three meets as a varsity athlete she has qualified for sectionals in both the 100 Back and 100 Breast. We can’t wait to see what the next weeks have in store for Chloe! Season record so far is 3-0 !
Girls Cross Country - On Wednesday, the Varsity Girls Team split a Tri-meet against Newton North and Framingham at Cold Springs Park in Newton. The girls lost to Newton North 23 to 35. Junior Greta Hammer placed 2nd with a time of 19:00 minutes on the 5k course. Seniors Eva and Audrey Adam placed 5th and 6th with Junior Janie Urban racing to a 10th place finish, followed by Alessia Uyenoyama in 12th. The Varsity girls won over Framingham by default. On Saturday, the team traveled to Manchester, NH to compete against many of the highest state ranking teams from NH and VT. In the Girls Varsity 5k race, Junior Greta Hammer placed 2nd on the day out of a field of 222 runners with a time of 19:01. Seniors Taylor Partridge and Eva Adam placed 49th and 56th respectively. Sophomore Alessia Uyenoyama tackled the challenging hills well, placing next for the team followed closely by Senior Audrey Adam. The team was 7th out of 31 teams, an excellent showing against these very talented New England teams. Season record is 2-1!
Boys Cross Country - This week the Rockets Boys Cross Country team participated in two meets. On Wednesday, the Rockets won against Framingham (15-50) and lost against Newton North (20-43) in a meet held at Cold Spring Park in Newton. Leo Winston was the overall winner of the event clocking 16:16 on the 5k course. This result places Leo at 11th all time for 5k performances for Needham cross country runners. On Saturday the team competed against many of the top New England schools in the highly competitive Manchester Invitational in Manchester, New Hampshire. Leo Winston was the top Needham finisher in 51st place. Overall the team placed 24th out of 36 teams in the large school division. Next week the Rockets travel to Walpole for a Wednesday meet against Walpole and Milton. Season record so far is 2-1!

Boys Soccer Boys Soccer extended their winning streak this week with two more road conference wins, (7-1) over Milton and (1-0) over Newton North. Senior Jasper Popper earned his first Varsity wins as a GK in both games including the clean sheet against Newton North. Sophomore Austin Williams tallied a hat trick against Milton with a couple amazing shots. Senior Ben Tatar earned his first Varsity goal with the game winner late in the second half against Newton North. Season record is 5-1!

Against Newton North, Hannah Levine (Jr) had the first goal on an assist from Michelle Faynstein (Jr); Second goal also Hannah Levine on an assist from Sydney Kalaw (Fr.) Hannah Levine was Player of the Match. Against D-S Hannah Levine (Jr) scored the first goal assisted by Michelle Faynstein (Jr). Gianna Moreschi (Sr) scored the second goal assisted by Sydney Kalaw(Fr). Ava Chiappinelli (Sr Captain) scored the third goal assisted by Izzy Marino (Soph). The Player of the Match was Gianna Moreschi. Season record is 6-0-1!
Girls Volleyball Girls volleyball split the week with a 3-0 win over Milton and a 3-0 loss to defending state champs Newton North. Senior Lisa O’Leary totaled 18 kills for the week! Season record is 5-2!
Football was on the road last week with a (34-8) win over Lincoln Sudbury. 5 different players scored a touchdown for the Rockets. The team is now 3-0 and takes on Newton North at Home this Friday.
Boys Golf went 0-2 on the week with both losses versus Braintree, (109-82) and (106-76). Senior Sean Concannon had a one over 37 in last Monday's loss to Braintree.
Cheerleading - Cheer did a great job showcasing their halftime routine with a joint performance with the Lincoln Sudbury Cheer team Friday night. We are looking forward to honoring NJR this coming week at our Throwback night.

Girls Swim & Dive - Madeleine Rowe is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. On Tuesday 9/10, Madeleine competed in the 200 Free and 500 Free against a strong co-Ed Milton team. Her strong performances in both distance events earned her two sectionals qualifying times and two second place finishes (8 points). In a meet where every point counts (Needham beat Milton 94-91!)Madeleine's perseverance helped secure our team’s victory! The team is now 2-0 for the season!

Senior Captain Leo Winston won the race in a time of 16:34, a one minute and 9 second personal record over his junior year best. Senior Captain Sam Cooperman (4th), Junior Sam Gustat (5th) and Senior Matteo Fucentese (6th) used pack running tactics to pass several Natick athletes over the second half of the race to secure the team win for the Rockets. Senior Hutch Turner finished 10th overall as the final Rockets scoring runner.
Field Hockey - The team went 1-2 on the week with a win over Braintree (6-1) and (2-1) losses to Brookline at the beginning of the week and Westwood at the end of the week. Field Hockey has a record of 2-2 so far this season!
Boys Soccer went 2-0 on the week with lots of goal scoring! A (4-3) win against Braintree early in the week and a (4-0) win over Walpole to end the week. Senior Captain Max Edwards scored 4 goals in 2 games last week. Sophomores Austin Williams and Alex Lucas also scored their first career Varsity goals during the week! The team has a 3-0 record in the conference and 3-1 overall for the season.
Girls Soccer - The Varsity Girls went 1-0-1 this week with a (0-0) draw away at Walpole and a (1-0) win at home against Braintree. Izzy Marino (Soph) getting the goal and Gianna Moreschi (Sr) getting the assist. In each of the four matches in which Natalia Ly (Sr) has played she has yet to let in a goal. The central defense pairing of Ava Chiappinelli (Sr – Captain) and Sam Horvat (Fr) have been excellent.
Girls Volleyball went 2-1 on the week with 2 wins against Braintree (3-1) and Walpole (3-0) and a tough 5 set loss (3-2) against the reigning D3 State Champs Weston. Junior Sadie Stants led the way in that match with 8 aces. The team has a record of 4-1 so far this season.
Football was on the road last week with a big (20-7) win and beating Natick in Natick for the first time in 10 years! Senior Stephen Rocamboli was player of the game with a 17 yard run for a Touchdown and a 31 yard interception for a touchdown! Football is on the road again this upcoming week at Lincoln-Sudbury and the team is now 2-0 for the season.
Boys Golf had a very busy week with 4 matches and went 1-3 on the week. Scores were:
106-82 win vs Walpole
108-98 loss at Weymouth
69-66 loss at Walpole
112-103 loss at Natick.
Senior Captain Justin Maira eagled the 9th hole of the Weathervane Golf Course to finish 2 over in the team's match against Weymouth.
Cheerleading - Varsity cheer leveled up their halftime stunts against Natick on Friday. JV brought high energy to the game. Both teams are super communicative amongst each other and are really bonding as a program. They are looking forward to their upcoming game against Lincoln Sudbury High School where they will showcase their halftime with them!
Girls Swim & Dive - Andrea Qie is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. In her first performance of her NHS career, Andrea broke the school record for the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 58.58. She secured first place finishes and qualified for states in the 100 Fly and the 100 Back in the Swim & Dive home opener vs. Framingham on 9/6 in which the team won (99-85). We have no doubt this is just the beginning of amazing things from Andrea this season!
Girls Cross Country - At the MSTCA Relays on 9/7, the Needham Girls XC had a terrific showing, placing two teams in the top 10 of the Frosh/Soph relay and two teams in the Top 10 of the Jr/Sr Relay.
The 2nd place Frosh/Soph team was Sidney Gilbreth, Alessia Uyenoyama and Maddie Roach.
The 4th place team was made up of Maiva King, Ava Conti and Marisa Williams.
The 3rd place Jr/Sr team was Audrey Adam, Eva Adam and Taylor Partridge.
The 10th place Jr/Sr team was with Siena Uyenoyama, Story Bracker and Katie Burns.
Boys Cross Country - At the MSTCA XC Relays, the Junior/ Senior team of Matteo Fucentese, Sam Gustat and Leo Winston finished in a very respectable 8th place overall out of 91 total teams in the race. The top Freshman/ Sophomore team of Kaden Hu, Austin Conti and Cash Lindsley finished 11th out of the 96 teams competing.
Field Hockey - Opened up the season with a (12-0) win over Weymouth. 9th Grader Emma Dammann had a hat trick in her first Varsity game ever. Senior Caitlin McNeil with the shutout.
Boys Soccer - Went 1-1 on the week with an exciting come from behind victory over Brookline 2-1 mid week. They would drop their 2nd game of the season to a tough Newton South team (3-0).
Girls Soccer - went 2-0 on the week with a big win vs Brookline (3-2) who ended the Rockets season last year. Izzy Marino (Soph) had 2 goals, Callie McCarthy (Sr) 1 goal. Terrific work in midfield from Sydney Kalaw (Fr) and quality work in defense by Ava Chiappinelli (Sr) and Sam Horvat (Fr) Later in the week they came out with a (2-0) win vs Newton South. Goals came from Callie McCarthy (Sr) and Izzy Marino (Soph). Clean Sheet from GK Natalia Ly (Sr); Quality work in defense from Sam Bonasia (Sr) and Kyra Wolin (Sr).
Girls Volleyball - went 2-0 in their first week with wins over Weymouth (3-0) and Brookline (3-1) . Junior Sadie Stants led the way with 11 kills at Weymouth and 7 more at Brookline.
Football - opened up their season with a big (24-0) win over defending D3 Super Bowl Champs Milton last Friday. The Rockets defense held Milton to just 100 total yards of offense. Senior Aidan Williams had 3 total TDs. Senior Will McDonald had 2 sacks, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a blocked punt.
Boys Golf - Went 0-2 on the week losing twice to a very tough Wellesley team. Junior Jack O'Neil shot 41 and 39 in his two matches against Wellesley last week, his first varsity matches.
Coed Unified Basketball will hold their first practice this week and is excited to get their season off and running!
Cheerleading - The team had a very hard working week! JV quickly grasped new cheers and progressed to extended level stunts. Varsity had their choreography this weekend and are hitting so many new stunting and tumbling skills. The program cheered together at Friday's game with a great performance at halftime and on the sidelines!
Dance had a great showing at friday night's football game cheering the team on and showing off their stunning routine during the halftime performances!

We're excited to have Mary Spierto back as our Head Athletic Trainer and welcome our new Assistant Athletic Trainer, Alexandra Finn to our Athletic Team!
We're also pleased to announce two new Varsity Coaches this fall: Todd White will be leading the Girls Soccer program after years of experience within the Needham Soccer Club and local training camps. Anna Montoya will be leading the Cheerleading Program after several years as the Assistant Cheer coach at Brookline High School.
Tryouts and practices began on August 16th with Dance and Football, followed by other fall sports on August 19th. Sailing and Unified Basketball will be starting their seasons shortly at the High School. Middle School Sports plan to start after Labor Day, and information about registration and tryouts will be communicated soon!
We're proud to announce yet again that all levels within each sport are filled. With high school sports participation at an all-time low across the Commonwealth, it's a testament to our great coaching staff, and Needham Community that we have so many students playing sports!
Building upon the success of Fall 2023, many teams are aiming for another deep postseason run. Girls Swim & Dive, in particular, are looking to defend their 2023 Division 1 State Title.

Girls Soccer saw their season come to a close after a defeat in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 16 to Brookline 3-0.
Field Hockey saw their season come to a close after a defeat in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 16 to Acton Boxborough 3-0.
Boys Soccer as the #2 seed beat #15 BC High 3-0 in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 16 and #10 Franklin 3-0 in the round of 8 to punch their ticket to the Final 4. They will play Wincester with a chance to make the State Finals for a 2nd year in a row. Game will be played on Tuesday, 11/14 at 6:30pm at the Manning Bowl in Lynn.
Volleyball as the #5 seed beat #12 Brookline 3-0 in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 16 and #13 Attleboro 3-0 in the round of 8 to punch their ticket to the Final 4. They will play Newton North on Wednesday, 11/15 at 6:00pm with a chance to make the State Final. Game will be held at Newton South.
Football as the #3 seed beat #6 Methuen 42-24 in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 8, punching their ticket to the final 4. They play Xaverian Brothers HS Friday, 11/17 at 6:00pm at Marciano Stadium in Brockton with a chance to earn a spot in the State Final at Gillette Stadium!
Cross Country - The Needham Girls XC team placed 6th at the MIAA D1A championships on Saturday, 11/11. This performance earns them a trip to the All State Meet which will be held at Fort Devens, MA next Saturday, 11/18. The team was led by Junior Taylor Partridge, who ran a stellar race to place 12th at 19:37 She was followed closely by Junior Eva Adam who had an excellent race and placed 21st in 20:04. Freshman Maddie Roach, Senior captain Mia O'Neill and Junior Audrey Adam all scored for the Rockets at the meet.
Coed Unified Basketball will play in the end of season jamboree at Cambridge R&L School on Thursday 11/16 at 4:30 PM.
Cheerleading competed in the MSAA South regional cheer tournament on Sunday 11/12 doing a great job scoring a 70.5.
Dance will compete in the State Finals at Braintree next weekend!
The Boys Golf team ended their season at states with their top 6, Harrison Silverman, Brady Chin, Nick Buckley, Sean Concannon, Spencer Clark and Ryan DiNicola competing in a very competitive D1 field. Congratulations to our Boys Golf team on all they accomplished this season!

Girls Soccer ended their regular season with a loss to Concord Carlisle earlier in the week 3-1. Girls as the #12 seed beat #21 Woburn 3-0 in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 32. They move on to the round of 16 at Brookline. Date TBD.
Boys Soccer as the #2 seed beat #31 Lexington HS 2-0 in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 32. They move on to the round of 16 hosting BC High on 11/8 at 6 PM at Memorial Park Field.
Volleyball as the #5 seed beat #28 Central Catholic HS 3-0 in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 32. They move on to the round of 16 hosting Brookline on 11/6 at 5:30 PM in A Gym Needham HS.
Swim & Dive- At South Sectionals, Sophie Guarrera went season bests in her Medley Relay split, 100 Fly, and 50 Free — earning 2nd, 6th, and 9th in those events respectively. The senior captain has had amazing performances all season long, and her performances at sectionals helped the team secure a second place finish overall!
Football as the #3 seed beat #14 Westford Academy in the MIAA D1 Tournament round of 16. They move onto the round of 8 hostingMethuen on 11/9 at 7PM at Memorial Park Field.
Cross Country - A trio of sophomores represented the Needham Girls XC team at the Frank Mooney Invitational on Saturday, 11/4 in Wrentham, MA. All three athletes placed in the top 20 in the very competitive field. Janie Urban placed 8th with a personal best time of 20:41, followed by Adah Rosen in 15th and Katie Burns in 18th. The team now prepares for the Divisionals championships which will be held at the Gardner Golf course next Saturday, November 11th.
Coed Unified Basketball had their senior day game vs Walpole in what was an electrifying game with a superb crowd. Before the game they were honored with official status by Special Olympics MA as a National Unified Champion School.
The Game Day Cheerleading Team took home first place at the Bay State Conference Invitational last week!
Dance finished 5th at the Endicott Invitational this past weekend and is gearing up for States!
Volleyball beat Braintree (3-0) and Walpole (3-1) this week, finishing the regular season 14-3, going 11-2 in the Conference. They host Central Catholic on Thursday, 11/2 at 5:30pm in the MIAA 1st Rd!
The Boys Golf Team finished 3rd at Sectionals at Easton Country Club last week to book their place in the State Tournament! The Team will tee off at 11am at Greathorse in Hampden, MA on Tuesday, 10/31.
Field Hockey suffered two losses this week but beat Braintree on their Senior Night to finish their regular season 13-5 and 11-2 in the Conference.
Girls Soccer tied both their games this week, while their 0-0 tie with Walpole secured the Herget Division Title. They finished 8-4-5 and 5-4-4 in the Conference.
Boys Soccer won both their games 3-0 this week, securing the Herget Division and League Title. They finished 14-2-2 on the season, going 12-1 in the Conference.
After snapping Wellesley’s 76 meet win streak last week, Needham Swim & Dive won the Bay State Conference Meet for the first time in 20 years! Chloe Wukitch secured first place finishes in her 500 Free and her 100 Back and played a key role in our Medley and 400 Free Relays
Football beat Framingham 24-7 on Friday night to finish the regular season 7-1, earning the #3 seed in the MIAA Division I Tournament. They will host Westford Academy on Friday, 11/3 at 7pm!
Cross Country - The Rockets Cross Country teams competed in the Bay State Conference Championship Meet in Wrentham on Saturday 10/28, with the Boys finishing in 6th place, Max Hammer came 16th in 16:41.7 and Sam Villa 19th in 16:57.4 and the Girls finishing in 2nd place, Sophomore Greta Hammer won the race in 18:16 with Junior Taylor Partridge coming in 7th, timed in 19:16.
Coed Unified Basketball traveled to Brookline and won in what was an exciting game that went into overtime. The team will take on Walpole this Thursday 11/2 at Needham High in its final home game of the season!

Football v Weymouth - Rockets pick up a 33-7 win on the road at Weymouth.
Boys Cross Country v Wellesley - Boys Rockets Cross Country Team lose an extremely close competition 27-28. Rockets in the top 10 included Aidan Railton (2nd), Max Hammer (3rd), Sam Villa (5th) and Leo Winston (8th). The Rockets travel to Wrentham on Saturday to compete in the Bay State Conference Championship meet.
Girls Cross Country v Wellesley - Girls lose a tough meet 22-33. Taylor Partridge ran a very strong race and a season's best time of 18:57 to place 2nd in a tight race to the finish. Junior sisters, Eva and Audrey Adam ran under 20 minutes again to finish 6th and 7th overall. Freshman Madison Roach continued her excellent progression to finish 8th in the race. Siena Uyenoyama was Needham's 5th scorer finishing 10th. The Rockets travel to Wrentham on Saturday to compete in the Bay State Conference Championship meet.
Girls Volleyball went 2-0 on the week with (3-0) wins over Weymouth and Framingham. The team celebrated its Senior class during the home match vs Weymouth.
Girls Swim & Dive finished the week 2-0 with a win over Weymouth (98-72) and over Wellesley (98-86). Ella Bobocea secured first place finishes in her 500 against Weymouth on 10/17 as well as in the 200 IM and 100 Free vs. Wellesley - helping our team beat Wellesley on Senior Night & breaking Wellesley’s 75 meet win streak! Ella has qualified for states in every event she has swam this season.
Unified Basketball was on the road this past week visiting Natick High School. It was a great competitive match. Unified is on the road this upcoming week visiting Brookline.
Club Sailing has been having a great season. Their last practice on October 30th will be a Halloween race against Cambridge and Boston Latin!
Unified Basketball had their first home game of the season v Framingham this past Wednesday in which was a great game between both programs. Freshman Mia Moreschi sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem and our Cheerleaders were along the baseline cheering on our Unified team.
Boys Golf - Congratulations to the golf team for finishing the regular season 10-3-1 after yesterday’s darkness shortened win over Weymouth (77-53). Also, congratulations to Harrison Silverman and Nick Buckley for earning all star status at the Bay State Conference Tournament held at The Country Club on Tuesday. Harrison was runner up with a 77 and Nick finished in 6th place with an 81.
Girls Soccer finished the week 2-1 after picking up a late 2-0 win last night over Newton South. After a 1-0 loss to Wellesley, the Girls bounced back with a 1-0 win over Milton on Thursday.
Girls Volleyball picked up straightforward wins over Wellesley and Milton 3-0 before playing one of the best matches of the year against Newton South on Dig Pink Friday Night. After leading 2-0, they ultimately lost 3-2 in an intense, back-and-forth match.
Boys Soccer finished a tough week unbeaten. They squeezed out a 1-0 win over Wellesley, and then came back from 1-0 down to both Milton and Newton South to win (3-1) and tie (1-1), respectively. Kyle Reddish had 2 goals on the week including the game winner against Milton and the tying goal against Newton South. He helped solidify the center of the park with his strong defensive play.
Field Hockey beat a resilient Milton team 1-0 on Wednesday before dropping their second game of the season 4-1 to Andover.
Football dominated all three phases of their game against Braintree, storming to a 28-7 lead at halftime. It was a great response after a tough loss to Milton last week.
Boys XC split their tri-meet on Wednesday, beating Framingham and losing to Newton North.
Girls XC beat both Newton North and Framingham to finish their regular season. Sophomore Greta Hammer won the Girls Varsity race with a time of 18:07, the 2nd fastest time ever by a NHS girl on the home course! Nearly every Rocket runner ran a personal record or season record on the course during Senior night.
Girls Swim & Dive beat both Framingham (97-81) and Natick (100-78) this week to improve their record to 7-1!

Boys Golf went 1-1 on the week. Loss vs Wellesley 96 - 123 and a win over Brookline 90 - 82. Brady Chin, Harrison Silverman and Nick Buckley will represent the Rockets at the BSC Championships at The Country Club on Tuesday.
Girls Soccer went 2-0 on the week with a pair of 1-0 wins over two undefeated teams, Newton North and Acton-Boxborough. Girls soccer is currently ranked 8th in Division 1. Boys Soccer went 2-0 on the week with wins over Natick (4-1) and Newton North (2-1). Boys soccer is currently ranked 2nd in Division 1.
Field Hockey went 3-0 this week with wins over Newton North (4-0), Wellesley (2-1) and Brookline (2-0). The team is ranked 8th in Division 1.
Football lost 10-9 at Milton suffering their first loss on the season. They are currently ranked #3.
Boys Cross Country - On Wednesday 10/4 the boys narrowly lost to Natick 24 to 34 score. Max Hammer won his 2nd consecutive Bay State Conference race. Captain Aidan Railton once again displayed his grit with a strong 4th place finish. Other Rockets in the top 10 included Alex Morrison (7th) and Cam Markowitz (10th). On Saturday 10/7 , at the Battle of the Border, Captain Max Hammer finished 7th overall with a big PR at 16:09.6. Captain Sam Villa continued his comeback with a strong 17:16.7 run. Aidan Railton was the third Needham runner with a time of 17:38.7. The Varsity boys finished 11th out of 23 teams.
Girls Cross Country - Wednesday, 10/4, Needham girls won 16 to 47 over Natick. Greta Hammer won the race with Eva Adam, Taylor Partridge and Audrey Adam placing 2nd,3rd, 4th and Delia Rauch finishing in 6th. An excellent race for all. On 10/7, at the Battle of the Borders XC race, the Girls Varsity team placed 3rd. They were the top MA team, beating the top 2 Division 1 NH teams and a very strong North Andover team.
Girls Volleyball went 1-1 on the week with a win over Natick (3-0) and a loss to Newton North (2-3). They sit 5th in Division 1. They also recognized their officials during National Officials Appreciation Week!
Girls Swim & Dive won their meet this past week vs Brookline 101 - 80. This puts the team at 4-1 on the season. They travel to Framingham tomorrow.

Leading the way this week was Bridget Roach who had 3 assists and 1 goal and Olivia Alper with 3 goals. Field Hockey are ranked 6th in the state in the Fall 2023 first edition of MIAA Power Rankings.
Football v Walpole- Football won 21-19 to remain undefeated on the season. Football is ranked 2nd in the state in the Fall 2023 first edition of MIAA Power Rankings.
Boys Cross Country- Boys Cross Country had a meet against Walpole and Milton last Wednesday. Walpole won against the Rockets in a close competition: 25-32. Needham defeated Milton 19-39. Senior Captain Max Hammer won the race with a time of 15:35, 15 seconds ahead of the 2nd place runner. Max's time is the fastest time a Needham boy athlete has recorded on the Houghton's Pond course. Other Rockets in the overall top 10 included: Aidan Railton (6th), Sam Villa (8th), Alex Morrison (9th) and Matteo Fucentese (10th).
Girls Cross Country - Needham wins over Walpole: (22-37) and Milton (15-47) in this past week's meet. Taylor Partridge finishes 2nd, Eva Adam 3rd and Audrey Adam 4th in the Varsity race.
Girls Volleyball v Walpole- With one game in the short week girls volleyball beats walpole 3 sets to 0 to put them at 6-1 on the season. Sophomore Lizzy Tam leads the league in aces and led the team in wins against Braintree, Barnstable and Walpole. Girls Volleyball are ranked 12th in the state in the Fall 2023 first edition of MIAA Power Rankings.
Co-Ed Unified Basketball had their first game of the season at Newton North in which was a hard fought game. Next game will be Wed Oct 11th at Needham High School A gym.
Girls Swim & Dive v Acton-Boxborough - Girls Swim and Dive with a huge win over A-B (105.5-78.5). Kylie O’Hearn is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. She has been consistently dropping times in the 200 and 500 Freestyle and the team has relied on her for quick turnarounds in the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays. Kylie has qualified for states.
Boys Golf went 1-1 on the week. They won their home match against Braintree 96-82 and suffered their first loss of the season on the road against Newton North 82-90.
Girls Soccer had 2 games this week. They won their home game against Brookline early in the week 2-0. They traveled to Braintree later in the week in which they played to a 0-0 draw.
Boys Soccer went 2-1 on the week and got their first loss of the season. The 2 wins came over Brookline (2-0) and Braintree (6-0). To end the week the boys took on St.John's Prep in the Wells Kicks for Cancer event. This was the lone loss of the week falling 1-0.
Field Hockey went 2-1 on the week. They picked up a win early in the week against Braintree (1-0), a loss against Walpole (1-4) mid week and in an exciting non league matchup to end the week a win over Dover Sherborn (3-2).
Football v Newton North - To start off the week Coach Doug Kopcso was awarded High School Coach of the week by the New England Patriots. A 27-7 win over Newton North puts the team at 3-0. Senior Running back Tate Hoffmeister had 202 rushing yards on 15 carries and 4 TDs.
Boys & Girls Cross Country - In their first home meet of the season boys cross country lost to Brookline 45-18. In their first home meet of the season, the girls cross country win over Brookline 24-37. Sophomore Greta Hammer finishes 2nd in a time of 18:46 at Cutler Park. At the Manchester, NH Invitational, Greta Hammer wins the Girls Large school Varsity Race in a time of 18:28.6. The Girls Varsity team finishes 4th out of 27 teams in a loaded field. Junior Taylor Partridge finished 24th with a time of 20:13.
Girls Volleyball went 2-1 on the week getting their first loss of the season. The 2 wins came over Braintree (3-0) and an exciting top 10 matchup with Barsntable (3-0). The loss came from Brookline in which girls volleyball lost (1-3).
Girls Swim & Dive got their first loss of the season this week when they visited Milton HS. The score was 91-95. Lucy Aswad is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. She finished first place in diving against a strong Milton team, and made her first qualifying score for States.
Golf - Golf team went 2-0 this week with wins over Newton North (107-81) and Walpole (85-75).
Brady Chin was athlete of the week after being low scorer vs. Newton North (even par) and second lowest score against Walpole. This puts the team at 5-0 on the season!
Girls Soccer v Weymouth- Girls soccer capture their first win of the season beating Weymouth 3-0. This puts the team at 1-1 on the season.
Boys Soccer took on Lincoln Sudbury and Weymouth this week. They played to a 0-0 draw vs L-S and beat Weymouth 3-1. Boys soccer are 3-0-1 on the season.
Field Hockey v Weymouth - Field Hockey had a big win over Weymouth 6-0 to put them at 2-0 on the season.
Football v Lincoln-Sudbury HS - Football moves to 2-0 on the season beating L-S 14-13.
Boys and Girls Cross Country had a Bye week and look to take on Brookline this upcoming week for the first meet of the season.
Girls Volleyball went 2-0 on the week vs Concord-Carlisle HS and Weymouth (3-2 v CCHS) (3-1 v Wey HS). The team moves to 3-0 to start the season.
Girls Swim & Dive v Walpole - First meet of the season saw Girls Swim & Dive with a win, 87-48. Paige Ingrando is the Girls Swim & Dive Rocket of the Week. She had PRs in her 200 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke, and qualified her 100 Breaststroke for Sectionals.
Golf v Framingham - Boys Golf picked up another win vs Framingham 98 - 75. This moves the team to 3-0 on the season!
Girls Soccer v Milton - Girls dropped their first game of the season on the road to Milton 1-0. Junior Ava Chiappinellil led the group last week with her defense and on and off the field leadership.
Boys Soccer starts off their season picking up 2 wins , 5-0 to Milton and 1-0 to Oliver Ames. Senior Matt Barten was part of a stellar defense to solidify two shutouts in the first two games.
Field Hockey picked up a 5-3 win at Milton to start off the season. Their game vs Andover was postponed due to weather.
Football v Natick - Rockets start off the season with a 14-6 win over Natick on their home turf. Senior Tate Hoffmeister led the way with 22 rushes for 178 yards and 2 TDs!
Boys and Girls Cross Country both had a split at their tri meet against Braintree and Weymouth. The Boys beat Braintree 24 - 32 while losing to Weymouth 24 - 31. The Girls beat Briantree 23-40, and dropped their race to Weymouth by a score of 21-36.
Girls Frosh/Sophomore team of Madison Roach, Katie Burns and Greta Hammer placed 1st out of 51 teams at the MSTCA relays. We had 4 teams in the top 11 in that event.
Our Athletics Department looks a lot different than it did this time last year!
Ryan Madden has taken over as Athletic Director as Dan Lee returned home to lead the Warriors at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. Ryan Madden served as the Athletic Director at Milton High School for the past six years.
Richkaard Verrier takes over for Ricky Andrade as he was appointed the new Hopkinton Athletic Director. Richkaard was most recently the Assistant Athletic Director at Brookline High School. Richkaard will also serve as the Coordinator of Club Sports.
Both Ryan and Richkaard played college soccer and are extremely familiar with the competitive Bay State Conference.

Mary Spierto is back as our Head Athletic Trainer, while Steph Wilson ‘17 also returns to the Training Room.
Brett Stinchfield started last January and is back in his role as Athletics Assistant and Bookkeeper.

Tryouts began Friday, August 18 for Football and Monday, August 21 for all other fall sports. Sailing and Unified Basketball are set to begin this week and next week and then we are fully underway!

Sue McNatt is excited to be the new Girls Head Coach of NHS Cross Country. Sue has coached in the NHS school system for 8 years, the last 5 as assistant coach for girls XC and indoor/outdoor track and field. A lifelong runner, Sue is a physical therapist who competed at a high level in high school and collegiate cross country/track and field and is ready to bring her passion, energy and expertise to the program. She was a 2-time All American in HS Cross Country and attended Northwestern University.
Kate Curtin is starting her first year as Head Coach for the Varsity NHS Girls Swim & Dive team this fall. A 2009 NHS graduate and former co-captain of the team, Kate had been actively involved with the Needham swimming community: helping to foster and grow the summer rec team for the past 13 years. While new to the role of Head Coach, Kate has spent the past two seasons as Assistant Head Coach for the Needham High team, and has served as Head Coach for Norwood High (2015-present), where she teaches social studies.
