All students must complete the NFHSLearn.org Concussion Course each academic year. Parents/Caregivers should complete this once per child every four years, though they are encouraged to complete every year as symptoms and protocls change often.
Certain sports at Needham High School and at the Middle School level will make cuts depending on how many students try out. Cust are made by the coaching staff and there is no room for appeal by students or their parents/caregivers. Students who miss all or most of the tryout times will not be able to try out if cuts have already been made, unless approval has been given in writing by the coach and Athletic Director.
Playing time is determined by the following; 1) Athletic ability in the sport, 2) Attitude and work ethic, 3) Attendance, 4) Commitment to the team, 5) Citizenship in school and in the community. This is determined by the coaching staff only.
Students failing more than one (1) class at the end of a final marking period are not eligible to play until the next marking period. Students may practice with approval from the coach and Athletic Director.
Below are the attendance and absence policies and procedures for all student-athletes at NHS:
Students absent from school may not participate in any extra-curricular activities that day.
Any students being excused for medical reasons from physical education classes may not participate in any athletic activities that day.
Students who are dismissed from school by the school nurse due to illness or injury may not participate in extracurricular activities for that day, including athletic events and practices/activities, student performances, schoolsponsored trips, etc.
Students who miss any classes or class time due to entering school late or leaving school early, or who cut a class, are ineligible to participate in any games, practices, or extra-curricular activities that day.
Students who are absent from school on Friday, or the last day of the week, without an approved excuse, are ineligible to play on the next calendar day after the absence.
It is preferred not to dismiss students early for regular season contests or practices. State competitions and tournament games may warrant early dismissal.
Linked here on page 34 of the MIAA Handbook, this rule essentially means students cannot miss a game, practice, or team activity in season for an another MIAA-sanctioned sport.
Example 1: Boys Lacrosse player during spring season wants to miss a Monday practice to go to club soccer practice. Not allowed.
Example 2: Girls Tennis player during spring season has the opporunity to attend a club/AAU Volleyball Tournament in Florida over the weekend. Will miss a Friday match and Saturday morning practice. Allowed if they complete the waiver process in advance.
Students should request permission from coach prior to asking AD for the Bonafide Team Rule Waiver. Should the coach approve, students must complete the form, and obtain signatures from their parents and coach. The form is then delivered to the AD. The AD and Principal must sign in advance of the tournament. Waiver requests after the fact will not count and students will be suspended for one (1) contest.

Most teams will have one designated "Senior Night" or "Senior Recogition Contest". This is to recognize a senior student-athlete's commitment to the program over the four years. Coaches are not required to start seniors, or give seniors any additional playing time during these contests. While many coaches will do so, not all circumstances are equal, and thus this should not be the expectation. Coaches are encouraged to find playing time for a senior if a contest allows.
We encourage all student-athletes and their parents/caregivers to engage in the Boosters Club Program. Creating lasting, memorable athletic experiences for our student-athletes would not be possible without the support and financial support of the Boosters. Boosters Meetings are generally held on the 1st Monday of each Month in the High School Cafeteria.
