NHS Athletics: Rockets Review

GIRLS SOCCER- D1 South Sectional Champion!
  • The #4 Seed in D1 South, The Rockets took on #1 Seed Bishop Feehan in the Sectional Semi-Finals on Wednesday night in Milford.  Needham controlled the game from the start and were finally able to break through late in the first half when Crea Baker-Durante put home a corner kick from Emma White to take a 1-0 lead.  The Rockets continued with solid pressure in the 2nd half, and the defense, led by goaltender Liz Vallatini, kept Feehan at bay to hold on to a 1-0 win!!
  • The Rockets moved on to face #2 Seed Whitman-Hanson in the South Finals on Saturday in Marshfield.  It was the tale of two halves as the wind played a major role in the game.  Needham had the wind at their back in the first half and took advantage.  After a WH defender misjudged the wind and let a ball bounce over her head, Baker-Durante ran under it and beat the keeper low to give the Rockets a 1-0 lead.  10 minutes later after a failed WH Corner, Needham went on the counter attack, Baker-Durante got the ball near midfield, streaked down the right sideline, cut it back and split two defenders, and blasted her 2nd goal of the game into the back of the net.  The Junior's 5th goal of the tournament had Needham out in front 2-0 at halftime.  The 2nd half was another story. Playing back in to the wind, put Needham on the defensive.  WH scored with 15 minutes left to make it 2-1.  They had plenty more opportunities to tie, but the defense turned them away each time and Needham held on for a 2-1 Win!! It is the Rockets first Sectional Title since 2000!
