CIPM Cultivating Connections for Success
We, CIPM, received funding from CALS to support student career goals and overall well-being as a part of the CALS 2024-2025 Strategic Excellence and Well-Being Program. Lauren S. will be leading this project with the Social Committee. We need your help! Everyone can contribute to support CALS students for success.
CIPM is implementing a new program called “CIPM Cultivating Connections for Success” to provide career resources and guide CALS students by showcasing student engagement in our cross-departmental research and professional activities. This program aims to support students to discover their strengths and interests and to find a career path that aligns with their skills and interests. This new program will promote academic success, leadership development, and open new career opportunities. CIPM will organize four roundtable forum discussions, in which guest speakers will present applied agricultural research and discuss how student involvement helps develop sustainable agricultural systems. The CALS students will have the opportunity to directly engage with guest speakers to explore job opportunities and to find career paths. In addition, we will develop an online student-oriented outreach program to feature student engagement in agricultural research by showcasing the CIPM’s research and outreach projects. We will interview CIPM student workers and post student voice and research summaries on the CIPM’s website. These articles will motivate students to engage in the campus research community and provide opportunities to find academic interests on campus and explore new career opportunities in academia, the federal government, and beyond.
We will be organizing two main activities. One is to organize one-hour in-person roundtable forums, and the other is to develop an innovative outreach program (online) for students. Here is our roundtable forum ideas with tentative dates.
Global pest invasion patterns (March 2025): The discussion on the global pest invasion patterns will engage participants by showcasing the research of two recent Ph.D. students at NC State University and sharing their experience on navigating graduate research and finding jobs after their graduation. Participants will learn the current challenges of managing invasive species, regulatory policies, future research, and potential solutions.
Climate change (May 2025): The discussion on the impacts of climate change on agricultural pests will bring together students, leading experts, and regulatory decision makers to discuss the trends, challenges, and innovative solutions. In this discussion, students will learn what skills and knowledge are needed and identify potential student work opportunities.
Careers in agriculture (July 2025): This forum focuses on agriculture jobs and career opportunities. Guest speakers from industry and government agencies will share their perspective on the job market, skill demand, and the challenges of job applications. Students will learn about potential careers, how to apply for jobs, how to get job experience, and find available resources to support career development.
Policy in Pest Management (September 2025): IPM is an effective and ecosystem-based strategy that combines a wide variety of tools and measures to control pest populations. The guest speakers (EPA, USDA, and NCDA) will focus on the importance of developing comprehensive IPM programs and discuss federal and local policy in pest management. Students will interact with policy makers to understand the current challenges and exchange their voice. This discussion benefits both the policy makers and the students by including their voice in policy making.
We are excited with this opportunity and want to make this program successful. We can demonstrate leadership in CALS by supporting student success! If you have ideas and/or want to participate in these activities, please let us know.
