National Black Forest Cake Day
It is time to celebrate the cultural history of Germany! March 28th recognizes a delicious dessert on National Black Forest Cake Day!
Black Forest cake (German: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) is a German chocolate cake with cherry filling. The exact origin of the cake is unknown, but it is believed that the cake is a dessert tradition from the Black Forest region - forested mountain range in Baden-Württemberg (Southwest Germany).
Some believe that the cake was invented in the 16th century in a German town called Baden-Wurttemberg. This place is known as one of the first places where chocolate started to be added into cakes and other dessert recipes. This town is also famous for its sour cherries and kirschwasser (cherry brandy). It is believed that the black forest cake gets its name from the location (Schwarzwald = Black Forest) and the alcohol (kirschwasser).
Another origin points to the cake being invented in 1915 by Josef Keller, a pastry chef at Caf Arend in Bad Godesberg. Another historian believes that the master patisserie, Erwin Hildenbrand of Cafe Walz in Tübingen, was the one who came up with the recipe in 1930. He has been working in different areas of the Garman Black Forest.
Regardless, Black Forest cake is delicious!!! Let's have a piece of Black Forest cake to appreciate the art and science of pastry and to learn about the traditions from Germany!
