USDA Scientific Exchanges Program
Scholars from South America
The Scientific Exchanges Program (SEP) Fellowship was created to promote food security and economic growth by educating a new generation of agricultural scientists, increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity, and extending that knowledge to users and intermediaries in the marketplace. The collaborative nature of the SEP training and research programs benefits the fellow, his or her home institution, and partner countries; the U.S. host institution, its professors, researchers, and students; and the global agricultural sector by improving agricultural productivity, systems, and processes in partnering nations through the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies.
The CALS International Programs is hosting the SEP scholars from South America for the next 12 weeks. We had a "Meet & Greet and Welcome Session" last Friday, and Dean Fox welcomed them to NCSU.
CIPM has partnered with IP to mentor two scholars. Godshen, Lauren, and Yu are mentoring them while they are here at CIPM. Please welcome Dr. Henry Vacacela (Ecuador) and Dr. Yeirme Yaneth Jaimes Suárez (Colombia) to CIPM. We will have a Get to Know each other gathering soon.
Dr. Henry Vacacela
Henry is a Researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP) in Ecuador. His academic background is in Agronomy and Entomology with emphasis in biological control. He is currently working on searching new natural enemies to control key pests such as phytophagous mites and fruit flies. At CIPM, he would like to learn about how climate change may affect the emergence of new pests and how some pests may disperse to new areas. He has many hobbies and enjoys running, swimming, and reading.
Dr. Yeirme Yaneth Jaimes Suárez
Yeirme is an Associate PhD Researcher at the Research Center La Suiza of the Colombian Agricultural Research Corporation (AGROSAVIA). Her academic background is in Plant Pathology, and she currently works on population biology of cacao pathogens to develop pest management recommendations and schemes. During her stay at CIPM, she wants to gain knowledge on developing forecast models for newly emerging pests of cacao. She enjoys exercising, listening to music, dancing, and reading books.
